Jeremiah Calling us to Renewal

Concept Notes:
Jeremiah was called by the Lord.

The time of the reign of King Josiah is the time where God called Jeremiah to be a
prophet. The Lord touched his mouth while saying, “See, I place my words in your mouth” (Jer
1:19) to give him assurance. Jeremiah was from the priestly family of Anathoth and grew up in a
village just a few miles from Jerusalem. He prophesied until the last king of Israel, King
Zedekiah.

God’s Message for us through Jeremiah

Jeremiah teaches us what true faith in God is. He spoke against

Israelites’ empty religious rituals and their continued idolatry. He taught them that
faith was about accepting God and following Him than performing outstanding
rituals.

Jeremiah visions of Judgment. In a vision, Jeremiah saw a boiling pot

being poured over Judah (Jer 1:13-19). They believe that this was a symbol of how
God gives judgment to people.

Jeremiah is teaching about the New Covenant. He predicted that even

most of Israel would be destroyed, a remnant would survive. Jeremiah preached
that in New Covenant, God would “write” His law in the hearts of His people.

The Struggle of Jeremiah

Jeremiah prophesied the fall of Jerusalem, made him hated by Israelites

and despised even by his own family. He was arrested, beaten, imprisoned, and
sentenced to death (Jer 26) and thrown down a dry well (Jer 38). These made him
often complained to God about his difficult mission (Jer 20).

Jeremiah Discovered Strength and Confidence

God encouraged Jeremiah through the ups and downs of his life. He
understood and felt his people’s suffering, and his agony brought him closer to
them. He was a transformed man, and God changed him into a person who could
face any difficulty. Jeremiah became an example of why Israelites needed God’s
hope and renewal.

Jeremiah Depicts God as a Divine Potter

God is like a divine potter, and His people are like clay. He molds His
people according to His will.
