Practice Paper - HOTS

Subject: Science Std: IX

Chapter 3: Atoms and molecules

General Instructions:
1. The Practice Paper comprises HOTS.
2. Attempt all questions.

1. Baking powder contains baking soda or sodium bicarbonate. Ishita used it for
baking a cake.
(a) Give the formula of baking soda.
(b) Name the elements present in baking soda.
(c) What is the ratio by mass of the combining elements in baking soda?
(d) What is the ratio of atoms of different elements present in baking soda?

2. An element forms an oxide A2O5.

(a) What is the valency of the element A?
(b) What will be the formula of the phosphate of the element?

3. Two samples X and Y of a pure substance obtained by two different methods

contain elements R and S. Substance X has a mass of 2.25 g and contains 0.90 g of
S. Substance Y is made up of 60% R and 40% S by weight. Show the law this
experiment illustrates?

4. An ionic compound of element M and chlorine has the formula, MCl3.

The molecular mass of MCl3 is 118.5.
What will be the molecular mass of the oxide of element M?

5. Four different experiments were conducted in the following ways:

I. 4 g of carbon was burnt in oxygen to form 30.3 g of CO 2.
II. 1.2 g of carbon was burnt in air to give 4.2 g of CO 2.
III. 3 g of carbon was burnt in 8 g of oxygen to give 11 g of CO 2.
IV. 4.5 g of carbon was burnt in enough air to give 11 g of CO 2.
Which experiment illustrates the law of constant proportion?

6. 1.25g of copper carbonate was added to a beaker containing 20g of HCl. After
completion of chemical reaction, the mass of the beaker and its contents were less
than 21.25g. Why does this happen?
