Activity 1
Science as a Subject

Science is one of the oldest and most important academic disciplines, and
covers a wide variety of subjects. It is also one of the fundamental parts of the term
STEM, used to refer to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

In many countries around the world, the matter of how to promote STEM
subjects is a hot topic. This is particularly true of the sciences, which can lead to
many great degree options for students.

So why study science? And why is getting more students interested in

studying science at university so important?

Firstly, science helps our understanding of the world around us. Everything
we know about the universe, from how trees reproduce to what an atom is made up
of, is the result of scientific research and experiment.

Human progress throughout history has largely rested on advances in science.

From our knowledge of gravity to cutting-edge medicines, students of Science have
shaped our modern world.

All of these advances can trace their origin back to individuals learning about
science as students. That’s why it is in the interests of governments, companies and
wider society to promote Science as a subject at schools; it ensures the next wave of
progress in all of the fields that affect our daily lives.

We are surrounded by technology and the products of science every day.

Public policy decisions that affect every aspect of our lives are based in scientific
evidence. And, of course, the immensely complex natural world that surrounds us
illustrates infinite scientific concepts. As children grow up in an increasingly
technologically and scientifically advanced world, they need to be scientifically
literate to succeed.

Ideally, teaching the scientific method to students is teaching them how to

think, learn, solve problems and make informed decisions. These skills are integral
to every aspect of a student’s education and life, from school to career.
Answer the following questions:

Why science is an important subject?

 Science is important because it helps in issue solving, technology
development, and understanding the world around us.

Why is science education important in our schools?

 Because it helps children develop critical thinking abilities and gets
them ready for the workforce, science education is crucial in schools.

What is the benefit of studying science?

 We can create new technology, find workable solutions to issues, and
make well-informed judgements both individually and as a group
thanks to scientific understanding.

How is Science involved in students’ everyday lives?

 In the process of cooking, eating, breathing, driving, playing, etc.,
science is involved. The products of scientific progress include the
clothing we wear, the brushes and paste we use, the shampoo, talcum
powder, and oil we use. All of this has become necessary, and life would
be inconceivable without it.

Discuss scientific inquiry and scientific method.

 People can better comprehend observable phenomena by using scientific
inquiry as a method of problem-solving and questioning. It is an
organised procedure based on factual data.

Why critical thinking is important in studying science?

 In science, critical thinking is crucial. Given that the use of evidence is
central to scientific thinking, it is what inevitably leads pupils in that
path. It's not enough to know if there is evidence to back up a specific
response; it also matters how reliable that evidence is.

What is the importance of Science in early education?

 Children who study science are better able to solve problems,
communicate, and do research. When working on a scientific
assignment in class, it's critical to remember that findings take time to
manifest. It requires both endurance and patience.
