Why do babies need calcium and iron in their diet?

Calcium is a mineral that helps build and maintain strong bones and teeth. When babies are born their
bones are still developing, so they need a good amount of calcium to support their growth. Not only is
calcium necessary for the growth and healthy maintenance of bones and teeth, but it also supports the
healthy functioning of your circulatory, muscular, and nervous systems. It helps your baby grow a
healthy skeleton, heart, nerves, and muscles. Moreover, proper calcium intake has been shown to lower
the risk of preeclampsia (a leading cause of premature birth). That’s why it is important for babies to
have enough calcium in their diet through breast milk, formula, leafy greens and fortified cereals.

Babies need iron in their diet to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein in the red blood cells that
carries oxygen to all parts of the body. Iron is important for healthy brain development, growth and it
supports the immune system and helps prevent anemia. Babies get there iron from breast milk, iron
fortified formula and iron rich solid foods like meat, poultry, fish, beans, and fortified cereals. It is very
important that babies are getting enough iron for their overall health and development.

Why do Pregnant and lactating women need calcium and iron in their diet
They need calcium in their diet because it helps in the development of their baby’s bones and
teeth, it also supports the mother’s bone health during pregnancy and breast feeding. Calcium is
important to both the mother and baby to have strong bones and teeth. It’s an important nutrient
for a healthy pregnancy and baby.
Iron is needed in their bodies because it helps in the production of red blood cells. Iron is
necessary for carrying oxygen to both the mother and baby. During pregnancy the body needs
more iron to support the increased blood volume. Foods like lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, and
fortified cereals are great sources of iron for the health and well- being of both the mom and the
baby.
Why do athletes need calcium and iron in their diet?
Athletes need calcium in their bodies because it plays and essential role in maintaining bone
structure and muscle contraction. But calcium is also involved in another mechanism essential to
athletes: that of energy production. It participates in the breakdown of glycogen into glucose,
thus providing energy to the body. Calcium is found in dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese) and
vegetables and starchy foods (white beans, chickpeas, cabbage, cauliflower).
Iron in an athletes diet, plays a vital role in optimizing performance, energy levels, and overall
health. Iron is essential for the proper functioning of mitochondria, the cellular powerhouses
responsible for energy production and it is also important in immune function helping athlete’s
ward off illnesses and infections that could disrupt their training and performance. You can get
iron from legumes, liver, pumpkin seeds, vegetables and tofu.
