DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
RATIONALE

In line with the commitment of the Department of Education (DepEd)

articulated in the MATATAG Education Agenda to “Take good care of
learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusive education, and positive
learning environment,” the Department places the highest priority on
ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of learners and teachers.

To ensure that this commitment is fulfilled, DepEd recognizes the

concerns of schools to revert the opening of classes to June. This strategic
shift aims to mitigate the challenges posed by intense heat and prevent
the risk of heat-related illnesses, necessitating adjustments on the school
calendar for School Year (SY) 2023-2024. The same challenges are also
articulated in the study of the Philippine Normal University (PNU) entitled
“Analysis of the Basic Education School Year Calendar in the Philippines:
Inputs to Policy” (PNU, 2023).
