Attempt all the questions from this Section

Question 1

a. Define least count. What is the least count of Vernier caliper? [2]
b. A pebble thrown vertically upwards with an initial velocity 325 m/s comes to a stop
in 5 s. Find the retardation. [2]
c. State the differences between mass and weight. [2]
d. State any two consequences of liquid pressure. [2]
e. Define the term potential difference. State its SI unit. [2]

Question 2

a. A cube of side 3 cm is placed inside a liquid. The pressure at the center on one face of the
cube is 9 Pa. Calculate the thrust exerted by the liquid on this face. [2]
b. A body weighs 450 gf in air and 310 gf when completely immersed in water. Find
the i) loss in weight of the body ii) upthrust on the body. [2]
c. State any 4 judicious use of energy. [2]
d. Define lateral inversion in a mirror. If an object is kept between two parallel mirrors
facing each other, calculate the number of images formed of that object. [2]
e. If the density of oxygen is 16 times the density of hydrogen, what will be the ratio of
the speed of their sounds? [2]

a. Explain the statement “Induction precedes attraction” [2]


b. The relative density of mercury is 13.6. State its density in CGS and SI unit. [2]
c. Identify the electrical components labelled A, B, C given in the below diagram. [2]
d. Give any two differences between concave and convex mirrors. [2]
e. What force, in newton, your muscles need to apply to hold a mass of 5 kg in your
hand? [2]

a. Give the difference between relative density and density of a substance. [2]
b. How does atmospheric pressure vary with altitude? Give an example. [2]
c. A conductor carries the current of 0.4 A in 30 s. How many electrons will flow in this
time if charge on one electron is 1.6 x 10-19 C? [2]
d. Define the two types of inertia with the help of examples [2]
e. Draw a neat labelled diagram of a bar magnet when it is placed with its South Pole
pointing towards north. [2]

Question 5

a. A car travels a distance of 100 m with constant acceleration and average velocity of
20 ms-1. The final velocity acquired by the car is 25 ms-1. Find (i) The initial velocity
ii) Acceleration of the car [3]
b. If an object is at a distance 25 cm in front of a plane mirror. The mirror is shifted 5
cm away from the object. Find the new distance between the object and its image
and the distance between the two positions of the image. [3]
c. (i) Explain the working of a hydraulic lift. [2]
(ii) If the area of two pistons in a hydraulic lift are in ratio 1:10, what force is needed
on the narrow piston to overcome a force of 450 N on the wider piston? [2]

Question 6

a. What are the factors affecting the resistance of a conductor. If a wire A at


temperature T1 initially is raised to temperature T2 for a process, what will be the
change in its resistance? [3]
b. The diagram below shows a frozen pond in a cold region [3]
(i) State the expected temperatures at A and B
(ii) Name the phenomenon responsible for these temperatures.
c. (i)Construct a neat, labelled ray diagram when an object is beyond center of
curvature C in a concave mirror. [2]
(ii) An object 5 cm high is placed at a distance of 60 cm in front of a concave mirror of
focal length 10 cm. Find the position and the size of the image. [2]

Question 7

a. A body held completely immersed inside a liquid experiences two forces: F1, the
force due to gravity and F2, the buoyant force.
Draw a diagram showing the direction of these forces acting on the body and state
the condition when the body will float and sink. [3]
b. Give three applications of ultrasound. [3]
c. Define Neutral points. Study the diagram below and determine the polarity at the
ends A, B and D. [4]

Question 8

a. Write the three equations of uniformly accelerated motion when the body is starting
from rest. [3]
b. Prove FB = V x ρ x g mathematically. State Archimedes Principle. [3]
c. Two conductors A and B are joined by a copper wire. State the direction of flow of
electrons in each of the following cases- [4]
(i) If A is negatively charged and B is positively charged
(ii) If B is uncharged and A is positively charged
(iii) If A and B are both negatively charged with qA ≥ qB
What is the work done in moving a charge of 90 C through a potential
difference of 30 V?

Question 9

a. Draw a labelled diagram of solar panel. State its advantages and disadvantages [3]
b. The speed of sound in dry air at 0 0C is 330 m/s. At 150 0C, calculate the speed of
sound in this hot air. [1]
Also, explain how humidity effects the speed of sound in air. [2]
c. Give any three properties of magnetic field lines. Draw the magnetic field lines of a
bar magnet when its north pole B faces geographic north. [4]

Question 10

a. State the principle of floatation. Give two applications of it in detail [3]


b. State any two Newton’s law of motion. A force of 10 N acts on a body of mass 2 kg
for 3 s initially at rest. Calculate the velocity acquired by the body and the change in
momentum of the body. [3]
c. Define the terms wavelength, wave velocity and frequency and derive the relation
between them. [4]
