5 Surveys and statistics show that use of drugs and alcohol has been on the rise 1
especially among the youth. This is really a cause of concern as it could result
in many harmful effects. Identify the incorrect statement from the below
given statements.
(a) Smoking increases carbon dioxide (CO2) content in blood and reduces
the concentration of haembound oxygen. This causes oxygen
deficiency in the body.
(b) Those who take drugs intravenously (direct injection into the vein
using a needle and syringe), are much more likely to acquire serious
infections like AIDS and Hepatitis B.
(c) The side-effects of the use of anabolic steroids in females include
masculinisation (features like males), abnormal menstrual cycles,
excessive hair growth on the face and body, enlargement of clitoris,
deepening of voice. In males it includes acne, reduction of size of the
testicles, decreased sperm production, breast enlargement,
enlargement of the prostate gland.
(d) Sports men use drugs to enhance their performance
6 Allergies are due to the release of chemicals like ________ and ________ 1
from the mast cells.
(a) Histamine and insulin from the mast cells
(b) Thyroxine and serotonin from the mast cells
(c) Interferons and colostrum from the mast cells
(d) Histamine and serotonin from the mast cells
7 Given below are some data with respect to microbes that are used for human 1
welfare. Which of the following option indicate correct pairing?

3’----CTTAAG—5’
(b) 5’----TAGCTA—3’
3’----AACGAA–5’
(c) 5’----CCGGAA–3’

Reason :Resources for growth for most animals populations are infinite .
SECTION B
(a) Identify part B and mention its role.
(b) Mention what helps the entry of sperm into the ovum.
(c) How much percentage of sperms must show vigorous motility in
order to ensure fertilisation?
18 Name the kind of diseases/disorders and any one symptom that is likely to 2
occur in humans if
(a) Mutation in the gene that codes for an enzyme phenylalanine
hydroxylase occurs.
(b) The karyotype is XXY
19 How two special types of cells responsible for acquired immune response 2
differ from each other in their mode of action?
20 In order to obtain the foreign gene product the cells harbouring cloned genes 2
of interest may be cultured in a system in which used medium is drained out
from one side while fresh medium is added from the other.
(a)What is the name given to this method?
(b)List two advantages of the above method.
21 “ It is often said that the pyramid of energy is always upright. Why? On the 2
other hand, the pyramid of biomass can be both upright and inverted. ”
Explain with the help of examples.

questions
a) Name the naturalist who studied the kind of relationship shown in the
graph.
b) Write the situations as discovered by the ecologist when the value of
Z lies between i) 0.1 and 0.2 ii) 0.6 and 1.2.
c) When would the slope of the line b become steeper?
SECTION D
Q no 29 and 30 are case based questions. Each question has sub parts with internal choice in one
subpart.
OR
(c )Why in the dihybrid cross conducted by a scientist, the ratio deviated from
9:3:3:1? Name the scientist who conducted the above mentioned dihybrid
cross.
30 Our immune system is a large network of organs, white blood cells, proteins 4
(antibodies) and chemicals. This system works together to protect us from
foreign invaders (bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi) that cause infection,
illness and disease. There are lymphoid organs where origin/maturation and
proliferation of lymphocytes occur and lymphoid tissues that occur within the
lining of the major tracts. Based on the above description answer the
Page 7 of 10
following.
(a)Name two types of lymphoid organs in our system.
(b)How they differ from each other in their mode of action?
(c) What constitute 50% of the lymphoid tissue in human body? Name any
two major tracts where they occur.
OR
(c) Explain two function of spleen.
SECTION E
32 Just as proposed the double helical structure of DNA, Watson and Crick had 5
immediately proposed scheme replication of DNA. This has been termed as
semiconservative replication. A DNA replication fork is shown below.
Observe the sketch and answer the questions that follow:
(a) When and where does replication of DNA occur in eukaryotic cells?
(b) Identify the polarity of the strands A-B and C-D.
(c) Why does DNA replication occur in such small forks? Name the major
enzyme that catalyses this process.
(d) Why is DNA synthesis continuous and discontinuous on the two stands?
OR

With respect to the genome project, answer the following questions:
(a) Name a free living non pathogenic nematode whose genome has been
sequenced.
(b) Mention the commonly used vectors in this project?
(c) A forensic scientist was exclusively asked to work only on a specific type
of sample for the process of DNA fingerprinting. Do you agree with the
above statement? Give a reason.
(d) What are the following two scientists credited for?
(i) Alec Jeffreys
(ii) Frederick Sanger
33 Unless a vector and source DNAs are cut , fragments seperated and 5
joined, the desired recombinant vector molecule can’t be created.
(a)Explain the technique of restriction endonucleases to cut the DNA
molecule.
(b)The cutting of DNA by restriction endonucleases results in the
fragments of DNA. Explain how these fragments can be separated.
(c ) Explain the step to visualise DNA band.
OR
Gene therapy is a medical approach that treats or prevents disease by
correcting the underlying genetic problem. Gene therapy techniques
allow doctors to treat a disorder by altering a person's genetic makeup
instead of using drugs or surgery. The first clinical gene therapy was
given in 1990 to a 4 year girl with adenosine deaminase deficiency.
ADA is very crucial for our immune system.
.
(a)State the cause of ADA deficiency in humans?
(b)Explain the first step taken towards gene therapy to cure ADA
deficiency problem.
(c)What was the drawback of the above therapy? Suggest a possible
permanent cure.
