GREETING
Northern Log Cabins, the product of an organization of specialists in log work. Floor
plans, dimensions and detail are arbitrary: we build any sort of cabin to order to meet
the particular requirements or to fulfill the ideals of that "perfect" cabin you have had
in mind so long.
is so appropriate, so durable, so comfortable in both winter and summer for the woods
dwelling as a well built log oabin. No frame structure can approach it in attractiveness
if properly made. With these facts in mind, we have striven to make every structure
a masterpieoe of our woodmen's skill with the axe, saw and adz.
we are in making this skilled service available to you. To you that harbor that insa-
tiable craving for action with rod and gun in your north woods stamping ground, we
express our sympathy and understanding. We express it more clearly in our cabins.
As oomfortable as old clothes, as neat as a new car, they satisfy your soul.
MATERIAL
All of our log cabins are built of straight f even tapering, sound softwoods,
such as pine f balsam, cedar, spruce and tamarack. Unless otherwise specified, all
logs are peeled to insure seasoning and durability. In each cabin even sized logs are
selected, so that when the building is completed there are no ill fitting or odd sized
logs in it 8 make-up.
In the vertical types, we ordinarily use eight foot logs in the walls, and
correspondingly shorter ones in the gables and porch railings. For vertical type cabins
6 W to 8 n logs are used.
In the horizontal type cabins, using logs laid one on top of each other
we use timbers 6 to 10" in top diameter, depending upon the size of the cabin. In all
cases, however, each wall is made up of even sized logs, varying very little in taper and
appearance.
CHIHKINS :
Our cabins are carefully built. The logs are set as closely together as the
material will permit. Very little chinking is required. Where very large logs are de-
sired, we use a metal mesh lath which is nailed in the inter-space as a base for plaster
or cement.
On vertioal types we recommend and use oakum for chinking, covering it on both
the inner and outer walls with strips of quarter round. The latter may be stained to
harmonize or contrast with the logs. In the smaller cottages where horizontally laid logs
are used, oakum and quarter round are to be preferred.
We employ the Finnish method of grooving and peaking the logs thru-out their
entire length when this class of construction is desired . In this method the top of each
log is trimmed to a sharp apex, the bottom of the next upper log is grooved to fit ti#itly
over this apex, forming, when packed with oakum, an almost water tight junction. An
example of this construction is illustrated in n The Sand Lake Club-House" pictured in one
of the following pages.
CORNER CONSTRUCTION :
In the horizontal types we use two methods of corner fitting: The square mortise
and the round notch. In the latter we let the logs project beyond the notch about 6 or 8
inches to give the necessary rustio effect desirable in a log cabin. The ends are trimmed
to a plumbed vertioal line so that all ends are exactly even.

FOUNDATION :
With each cabin we provide necessary ground posts of large oedar. In specifying
the type of oabin you are interested in make sure that you note in your inquiry blank the
depth of top soil on which your cabin is to be ereoted, as well as the distance above the
ground you wish the floor line to be.
For construction on site, where the customer does not arrange to erect his own
foundation with looal labor, we will put in foundations with our own experienced employees.
In the inquiry blank on the last page, you will find blank spaces for specifica
tions to cover all points and details of the cabin you wish to build. Unless otherwise
specified, our windows and doors, door frames, etc., are of a good grade of white pine,
susceptible to painting.
LUMBER ;
For roofing and base flooring for double floors, we use No. 1 planed matched
hemlock. In single floors, we furnish 1" top dressed matched fir. Trim, quarter round
etc, we furnish in white pine. Hardwood floors furnished if desired.
ROOFING
We will furnish any type of roofing desired. We recommend a three ply slate
covered green or red paper, or if something more elaborate is desired, slate covered
shingles or White Cedar shingles. Malti colored or so called autumn leaf roofing and
shingles are the last word in attractiveness.
STAINING:
For construction on site, we of course do all the necessary staining and painting.
For log cabins the light browns, greens, and light oaks, or natural stains are the most
popular. Linseed oil on barked logs gives about the best effect attainable. Some owners
go farther and varnish the interiors, using no stain or coloring.
In ready made oottages we will supply at your option any oolor desired in sulfide
quantities to cover all woodwork

THE NOHTHtRH"
A man s cabin.
T
Just the thing for the lucky "fan" who possesses a private stamp-
ing ground —
that cool woods retreat where the trout pools are always potent in
summer; where on frosty autumn mornings the crack of powder blends with the whirr of
the grouses flight or the whistle of mallard wings; where in November you can let your
whiskers grow until at last some early morning on Buck Ridge you "connect" with the
grandfather of them all — that buck with the "rocking chair" horns. Cooking that no
hostelry can imitate — flapjacks with maple sirup, bacon and coffee, hot biscuits and
venison steak —
a session of poker in the evening with a crackling fire in the fire-
place — an unmodified review of the days adventures — you know . The cabin where
memories are made.
Made in sizes to suit the customer. Equipped with screened logged-in porch, fall
log walls, well lighted. Shipped ready made or constructed on site.

Old timers will recognize the "lay-out" and the value of the breezy area way between the
eating and living parts of the structure* An ideal camp for a party of Izaak Walt one
or a group of out door enthusiasts. The experienced woods-goer will appreciate the
large living room, as well as the fact that most parties are made up of people with
varying ideas of the time to rise and breakfast* The segregated kitchen effectively
shuts off all noise, heat and objectionable odors from the living section of the camp.
A cabin that some of you have been looking for. Equipped with four bedrooms, two
screened porches, an extra large living room and a great stone fireplace, this cabin
is particularly suitable for the two family groups or small club.
Cool and spacious in summer, it may be made attractive for winter outings by glass-
ing-in the porches and equipping it with suitable heating apparatus.
Constructed on site. Prices on application.
