NATURAL
SELECTION
ADAPTATIONS OF POLAR BEAR
GALAPAGOS ISLANDS
• The Galapagos Islands are distributed on either
side of the equator in the Pacific Ocean. They
are part of the Republic of Ecuador.
• The species were studied by Charles Darwin
during his voyage of HMS Beagle. His
observations and collections contributed to the
famous Darwin's theory of evolution by means
of natural selection.
DIFFERENT SPECIES OF FINCHES ARE ADAPTED
FOR THE FOOD THEY EAT
Darwin observed that beak shape varies
among finch species. He postulated that
the beak of an ancestral species had
adapted over time to equip the finches
to acquire different food sources.

This means a species might

change with time. This is
known as Evolution.

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST!!
•Darwin thought that in each generation, the
better adapted individuals survive longer
and reproduce more successfully. They pass
more copies of their genetic materials to the
next generation.
•Less adapted individuals do not survive so
long and have less chances of reproducing.
