Augmented Reality

Research Focus

Efforts are being undertaken to develop new augmented

reality (AR) technology for communicating real-time
information between computer databases and screening
systems and plant workers.

Two types of AR technologies are being developed and

evaluated under this effort: a laser scanner and a see-
through head-mounted display. The laser scanner was
purchased and integrated with ATRP’s laboratory shackle
line. Software was developed that allows the laser to track A laser scaner integrated into ATRP's

existing head-mounted display and a video camera. It is
being integrated with ATRP’s inertial tracking system to allow its position to be tracked
dynamically. The position and orientation of the head-mounted display helps the system to
determine where to place the real-time information on the see-through display.

Both systems are expected to open new doors for enhancing communication between computers
and humans. The laser scanner system is less intrusive on the plant worker and potentially a
more near-term possibility for implementation. The head-mounted display system offers broader
potential and mirrors the broader field of AR research and development that is currently taking
place in other application fields.
