Hello All.
Well here we are again at the start of a New Year, and no doubt this year will pass just as
quickly as the last few have (a sign of getting older I’m told and I refuse to say old!).
From the weather forecast it sounds as if we will need to hold on to our hats in the next day
or two as the cold snap changes to wind and rain.
Best wishes

February 2024 Issue

The next Parish Council meeting will be held on

Wednesday 27th March 2024 at St. Andrews Church at 7pm.
Residents are very welcome to attend.

Flood Issues
The Council has been made aware of some flood issues. To report an issue
please call Anglian Water on 0800‑145145.

Congham Walk Map

Progress is underway to replace our current walk map. We are looking forward
to seeing the progress and benefits of a new and updated walk map in our
beautiful village of Congham.

Councillor Vacancy

Congham Parish Council has a Parish Councillor vacancy to be filled by co‑option.

We are a small, friendly parish Council which meets bi‑monthly, on a Wednesday
evening. If you think that you would like to represent the views of your neighbours
and residents of Congham, please consider joining us. The Parish Council
currently has very little female representation or youth representation. The clerk
would be happy to talk to anyone who would like some further information.
Alternatively, please do come along to our next meeting.

Highways / Footpaths

Congham Parish Council would be grateful for any observations in relation to

the condition of our footpaths and roads.

General Issues

Your Councillors are always willing to help with any issue, please e‑mail the clerk to
report any concerns. Please do not hesitate to let us know of any problems so that
they can be resolved as soon as possible.

Holly Meadows School

With the new‑year now well underway, we have been reflecting on achievements
throughout 2023 and setting challenges and ambitions for 2024. One of our goals
is to continue to enhance our outdoor provision. Part of this project involves the
development of the interior of the poly‑tunnel in preparation for re‑launching our
gardening club after half term. A huge 'thank you' to those of you who have kindly
voted for us using your blue tokens in the Tesco 'Stronger Starts' campaign
between October and January. Any contribution we receive from Tesco will be
greatly appreciated.

Two of our extremely dedicated and hard‑working Year 5 pupils, Luke and Jacob,
have used almost every playtime and lunchtime since the term started to tidy and
organise our school garden and raised beds ready for the new planting and
growing season. We have been so impressed by their skills, knowledge and
determination and look forward to enjoying the transformation throughout the
year!

As you will see from our PTA column, we have lots of community events coming
up this year, one of which is the Easter Bingo on Friday 22nd March. Thank you so
much for the kind donations of prizes, we are so grateful for your generosity. As
you will be aware, funding for schools is under constant strain and we certainly
value all charitable contributions to help us to enrich experiences at school.

All at Holly Meadows would like to wish you a happy and healthy 2024!

Grimston and District WI

We are looking forward to celebrating our 90th Birthday at the end of 2024. 90 years
have seen a big change in attitudes and speakers as evidenced in old record books.
The WI still encourage education and support for women all over the world. Our
members seem to follow the adage of Fun, Food and Friendship.
We finished last year with a very enjoyable meal at the The Three Horseshoes and
started in January with a demonstration of Bobbin Weaving – a very intricate craft.

Monday February 19th 7.30pm

is our Annual Meeting and Social Evening

but we welcome prospective members to come and share refreshments and chat.
Every month we also meet for lunch at a local venue.

On Monday March 18th Mark Dye will come to tell us all about the Gaywood River.
Water and flooding are very much in the news.

A calendar of our monthly meetings is on the WI notice board in Grimston village hall.
Do look and see what is happening, new members are always welcome. We usually
meet on the third Monday of the month at 7.30pm except for December.

Pott Row Chapel
Many many thanks to everyone who supported our Christmas Tree festival early
in December. The trees decorated by various individuals and organisations were
varied and caused lots of discussions, we enjoyed chatting to people who came
to see the trees ‑ and to have the church so full for the Carol service was lovely.
Outside it was a cold and chilly weekend, but inside the chapel we were warm
and cheery. We raised the incredible sum of £840, our highest total yet. From that
we have made a donation towards Action for Children, one of our regular charities
to support. Thank you! We also enjoyed welcoming our friends from St Botolph's
to run a children's craft workshop in the chapel on December 21st ‑ a very glittery
time was had as christingles were made, cards painted, and decorations crafted.

And now, it's 2024. We're beginning to plan for Easter, FenFest… and, sadly, we
will say goodbye to Robert our minister in July. But we look forward to working
with Richman Ncube as our new minister ‑ and to next year's Tree Festival!

Services for February, starting at 10.30am

4th ‑ Rev Robert Roberts leads Holy Communion

11th February‑ no service

18th February ‑ service led by Elizabeth Batstone

25th February ‑ Local Arrangement, service led by Chapel regulars

There will also be a coffee morning on February 8th, starting at 10.30am. If it's
cold outside, come in and get warm!

Owls

“The Grimston OWLS” are a group of oldies who lunch…We meet once a month
at a chosen restaurant for a meal…sometimes good, sometimes not so
good…but always chatty and cheerful.
13 of us had an excellent meal at the Carpenters Arms a week ago. I enjoyed my
Game Pie very much…Peter had a baked haddock and prawn sauce and others
had curries and vegetarian tarts….there wasn't a morsel left on anybody's plate
Our next date is Feb 14th ..Valentines Day..and we are going to Brothers in Arms
at Walpole Cross Keys. There will be a pre order menu for this event. March 13
will be the next meeting after that,,,the lunches are usually the second
Wednesday of the month. If you would like to join us, we would be delighted to
see you.
Transport can be arranged. Please contact us, Judith and Peter , on

Come on in, the water's fine!

'Fifty three was the year of the great east coast flood
'Sixty three and garden lavvies were still commonplace
'Seventy three we had sewers, the future looked good
'Eighty three, new estates encroached on green space.
'Ninety three and the village populations are booming
'Zero three, climate change will avoid us, we hope
'Thirteen and a public health crisis is looming
'Twenty three and the sewers are failing to cope.

Our single pipe system continually defeated

Surface water and sewage in volumetric excess
From numerous manholes the stench is excreted
Fountains of filth and pathogens, no less.
Twenty‑first century facilities now redundant
Those porcelain pans our relief and our pride
The waterboard's attitude so blatantly repugnant
Excuses abound, resolution denied.

Roads are impassable and dwellings invaded

No hope of recompense, direct debits still fly
Traffic lights and tankers bring short‑term relief
Dreams of an answer just pie in the sky.
So cast off your trainers and get used to wellies
Disinfect the doggie and scrub down your kid
Prepare for a fast car to splash you with smellies
And mind you don't trip on a floating drain lid.
