Nos. 26-30) Read the following passage carefully and darken the circle/circles corresponding to the correct statement/statements of the respective passage: 10x5=50 26. The Indian Forest Act 1927 says ‘forest produce’ is what is found in or brought from a forest, This includes {tees and leaves and plants that are not trees, Furthermore trees include palms and bamboo. Over the years, foresters have interpreted the provisions to mean that bamboo being a tree is timber and therefore under the control of the forest department. People, who live in the forests, have no right to sell the nationalized minor produce, other than to Governments. They remain wage labourer and collectors for contractors and forest department. Statement 1: Bamboo is considered timber, because it is a tree. Statement 2: Foresters do not consider bamboo as a timber, Statement 3: Large trees are only considered to be forest produce. 27. Water distribution in the World is very uneven. While the Amazon alone carries 16% of the global runoff, the arid and semi-arid zones of the world that constitute 40% of the total land mass receive only two per cent of the global runoff. While, such uneven distribution of water drives diversities in climate and ecosystem, it also results in conflicts as agriculture, industries and domestic sectors compete with each other for the scares resource. Statement 1: Amazon is kind of arid region. Statement 2: The Arid and semi-arid regions are regularly fed with water. Statement 3: Uneven distribution of water is responsible for some of the conflicts, AB.Se. K(II1)-ENVS Mus.(H)) (8) 28. The history of human civilization traditionally was dependent on ecosystems services for survival and ‘wellbeing. Developmental progress in all spheres of activities are frequently having negative impacts on sustainability of the system. The alterations in the environmental system involving land transformation, unequal resource distribution, wastage of energy and materials etc. lead to impacts like global warming, climate change etc. Consequently, it defies the sustainable way of living that can meet the fundamental needs of future generation. Statement 1: Global warming is a result of alterations in the environmental systems. Statement 2: The modern human civilization is dependent on ecosystems service. Statement 3: ‘The environmental alterations lead to sustainable way of life and enable the society to meet the fundamental need of future generation, 29. Bcologists who have studied particular mature ecosystems over prolonged periods have found that the populations within them fluctuate erratically from year to year, but within quite narrow limits. Overall, the composition remains fairly constant provided the system is not severely disrupted from outside, as it might be by a major pollution incident, for example, a disease such as myxomatosis or Dutch elm disease. This, of course, is what is meant by the stability of mature ecosystems. Statement 1: The stability of mature ecosystem can be disrupted by major pollution incidents, Statement 2: The stability of mature ecosystem can be disrupted by any disturbance, Statement 3: Population within them fluctuate erratically from year to year. 30. Land degradation occurs both due to natural and man-made causes. Land degradation shows up chiefly in the form of water erosion, followed by wind erosion, biophysical and chemical deterioration. Deforestation is both, a type of degradation by itself, and a cause for other types of degradation, principally, soil erosion. It is reported that approximately 57% of the land area has been degraded in one way or the other. The adverse impacts of land degradation are visible on India's environment and economy. Statement 1: Land degradation occurs only due to man-made causes. Statement 2: Deforestation is both a cause and effect of land erosion. Statement 3: The land erosion in India is negligible.
