Country Parks
Country Parks
Country Parks
Good morning! Today’s motion is “Country Parks should be used for urban development in
Hong Kong”. Imagine the following situation: Chris Wong is a 10-year-old kid. He does not
have enough fresh air because of inconvenience to access to country parks. Actually, he is
not alone-if Hong Kong is decreasing the amount of Country Parks. As the oppositive side, I’ll
illustrate why today’s motion must not stand by analysing the issue in depth as follows.
The main reason for country parks should be kept is that it is fantastic places for the nature.
As we all know, environmental problems have long been an international issue. Given that
the nature could provide irreplaceable value to humans, ranging from fresh air to ecological
equilibrium, country parks are indispensable for all animals in the world, including humans.
If all the country parks were used for urban development, it would deteriorate the effect of
global warming, which would severely affect people’s lives since it would cause heatwaves
and typhoons more frequently. Thus, reserving country parks is a satisfactory solution to
alleviate air pollution.
Apart from environmental problems, country parks used for urban development would
impact the economy of Hong Kong. Due to the importance of the tourist industry for Hong
Kong, Country Parks should be further retained undoubtedly. For instance, people who
appreciate the environmentally friendly city would not visit Hong Kong, which means that
the government lost a part of the money from these kinds of people. It can be clearly seen
that in terms of economic development, country parks being used for urban development is
definitely an unfeasible measure. To make matters worse, country parks being used for
urban development would also minimize the reputation of Hong Kong. Therefore, there is no
reason for country parks to be abated.
Some may claim that the land in Hong Kong used for residence is absolutely shortage and
redeveloping country parks as urban use is a great way to mitigate the land shortage
substantially. Nevertheless, the government has contributed a lot to natural conservation,
ranging from protecting endangered species to new nature conservation policy, which has
long been one of the centrepieces of the government's plans for future development.
Compared to country parks, leveraging the undeveloped place for urban use is smarter.
Hence, instead of redeveloping country parks to fester the natural conservation, the
government should undertake to utilize the undeveloped places.
On balance, country parks should not be used for urban development in Hong Kong. It is no
doubt that decreasing the area of country parks do no goods for Hong Kong citizens. My
second and third speakers will further elaborate our arguments and prove that today’s
motion must not stand with evidence.
Thank you!
