As technology advances, it may seem that the value of libraries is declining; however,

their function as a public space unites a community and connects citizens of all ages.

In the United States, the number of households with internet access has risen in recent

years. Allowing many families to purchase books from home and receive information freely.

Which is contributing to the lack of attention and funding given to libraries. However, without

them, public access to information would become limited. “YOU-media” A service at the public

Chicago library allows any teen with a city library card to have access to different software and

technology. Teens are often in search of a like-minded community, a library has proven to be a

strong community center as well as a source of information. Most importantly these community

events for teens are often centered around sharing knowledge. The way a library provides public

access to information, and more importantly, the ability to build modern skill sets, promotes an

informed and democratic public.
