Newton’s 3rd Law and Normal
Force
Lesson Objectives:
• Understand that the forces in nature are a type of mechanical interaction between two
bodies

• State and explain Newton’s third law of motion and identify the interaction pair (action
and reaction pair) and the objects on which they act. Use the formula below to relate
the forces.

• Identify the action-reaction pairs as those which act on two different objects, are of the
same type, are equal in magnitude, opposite in direction and act for the same time.

• Use Newton's laws to solve problems with normal forces, tension and objects connected
by strings, including Atwood’s machine.

• (36) A block hangs from the ceiling by a
massless rope. A second block is attached
to the first block and hangs below it on
another piece of massless rope. If each of T2
the two blocks has a mass of 5.0 kg, what
is the tension in each rope?

M2g

For M1
For M2
T1 = M 1 g + T 2
M2g = T2 T1 = M 1 g + M 2 g
Problems
• (37) If the bottom block in problem 36
has a mass of 3.0 kg and the tension in
the top rope is 63.0 N,
