QUESTION 1 (20 MARKS)

a) Given z = -</64 — x2 —y2.


i. Find the domain and range of the function. (2 marks)
ii. Sketch the level curves projected on the xy-plane for z = 8, z = 4 and
z = 0. (3 marks)
iii. Sketch the surface of the function. (2 marks)

a) Find the tangent plane to the surface f{x,y) = x^Jx + y at point (1,3,2).

b) Volume of cylinder with radius r and height h is given by v = nr2h.
Maximum error in calculating r and h are 0.03 and 0.01, respectively.
Find the maximum error in calculating volume when r = 1 and h = 5.
(7 marks)
c) The surface area of an open rectangular box, is given by S = xy +2 xz+2yz,
where x is length, y is width and z is height. If the rate of change of x
and y are increasing at 0.1 cm /s and 0.2 cm /s, respectively, while the rate
of change of z is decreasing at 0.3 cm /s, find the rate of change of S when
x = 30 cm, y = 40 cm and z = 50 cm. (7 marks)

b) Find the mass of a solid with density S(x,y,z) = 5 and bounded above by
