The ozone layer, located in the Earths stratosphere is an area, with a presence of ozone
(O3) molecules. Its primary function is to safeguard life on our planet by absorbing a
portion of the suns ultraviolet (UV) radiation. By shielding the Earths surface from the
majority of UV B and UV C rays which're detrimental to both humans and the natural
world the ozone layer helps prevent health problems, in humans and protects plants
and animals from damage.
Importance of the Ozone Layer:
UV radiation protection: The ozone layer serves as a shield absorbing the majority of
UV radiation, from the sun. This radiation has been linked to skin cancer, cataracts and
other health issues in humans. Additionally, it plays a role in safeguarding marine
ecosystems and terrestrial life.
Preservation of crops and phytoplankton: Depletion of the ozone layer poses threats to
crops and phytoplankton, which're components of the food chain. The presence of an
ozone layer helps protect these elements of the ecosystem.
Montreal Protocol:
Phasing out Ozone Depleting Substances; The main objective is to eliminate the
production and use of substances such, as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) halons, carbon
tetrachloride and other substances that harm the ozone layer.
Promoting Research and Data Collection; The protocol emphasizes the importance of
conducting research and collecting data on substances that deplete the ozone layer as
exploring alternative options.
