ECDIS
COACHING
GUIDE
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
1. What kinds of charts are used for ECDIS?
There are two kinds of official digital nautical charts commonly available; Electronic
Navigational Charts (ENC) and Raster Navigational Charts (RNC).
ENC is primary on fleet vessels of Genel Denizcilik A.S.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 8 / 4.1.1)

2. What is an ENC?
ENC stands for Electronic Navigational Chart and was originally introduced to signify a digital
chart that complied with the IHO chart data transfer standard S-57. By definition, ENCs can
only be produced by or on the authority of a Government, authorized Hydrographic Office or
other relevant government institutions. ENCs meet SOLAS chart carriage requirements when
they are kept up-to-date and used on a type-approved ECDIS with an adequate back-up
arrangement.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 28 / 4.1.2)

3. What is an RNC?
RNC is a Raster Navigational Chart. RNCs are digital raster copies (i.e. digital images) of official
paper charts conforming to IHO Product Specifications RNC S-61. RNCs can only be issued by,
or on the authority of a national hydrographic office.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 9 / 4.1.4)

4. What predefined Display Modes are available in the system?

There are three sets of predefined chart display settings
that can be used to display charts with certain chart
features. The predefined chart display settings are: Base,
Standards, Others
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and
Procedure Page 12 / 4.2.2)

5. Which chart features are displayed in BASE mode?

Coastline, Traffic routing systems, scale, range, orientation and display mode, units of depth
and height, own ship safety contours, indication of isolated dangers which lie within the safe
waters. ECDIS display modes that are set-up in ‘base’ display mode may remove vital
information.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 12 / 4.2.2)

6. Which chart features are displayed in STANDART mode?

Base plus, Drying line, Fixed and floating aids to navigation, boundaries of fairways, visual and
radar conspicuous targets, Prohibited and restricted areas, Chart scale boundaries, Indication
of cautionary notes.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 12 / 4.2.2)

7. Which chart features are displayed in ALL mode?

Standard plus, Spot soundings, Submarine cables and pipelines, Ferry routes, Details of
isolated dangers, Details of aids to navigation, Contents of cautionary notes, ENC edition
dates, Geodetic datum, Magnetic variation.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 12 / 4.2.2)

8. Which chart features are displayed in OTHER mode?

The base display is an absolute minimum and cannot be reduced. Its use may be helpful for
initial appraisal in the planning stage as well as when moving the chart display to allow a
faster regeneration of the display.

11. What is 4.0 presentations library and how can you confirm it?
The responsibility for the portrayal of an ENC on an ECDIS screen is controlled by the ECDIS
standard ‘S-52’. This is authored by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).
ECDIS manufacturers refer to these IHO ECDIS Standards when developing their software,
specifically the latest Presentation Library (4.0) within S-52. This contains instructions for the
‘drawing engine’ within the ECDIS on how to display symbols, colors and line styles on the
screen.
To confirm it, first click the question mark on top right of the screen, then click the “About”
button and the edition of the presentation library appears on the screen.

12. What is ECDIS Chart 1? Can you show it?

ECDIS Chart 1 is a dataset which includes a legend of symbols used in

ENC’s. Chart 1 enables users to check that their systems are capable of
displaying the new symbols. It should be installed on all type approved
ECDIS.

To show the Chart 1, click on “Chart INFO” on the left bar of the screen.
Then click on “Chart 1”.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
13. Can you tell what the compilation scale of the chart you are viewing is?
Right click on the mouse and click on “Chart Legend”.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
14. How do you achieve the BEST SCALE/COMPITABLE SCALE when using ENC's?

Checking the compilation scale of the ENC and adjusting the scale of your view accordingly is
also another way to see the ENC at its best scale while using it.
During navigation appropriate band scales shall be used in order to provide sufficient
information available in the ECDIS.

(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 19 / 4.2.10)

GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
15. Confirm Scale 5 Cells for next harbor
There are two ways to answer this question;
1- Open the “Chart Legend” on the chart of your next harbor. The name of the chart shows
the scale.

2- Switch to the “Charts” mode of your

ECDIS. Click on “Manage Charts” from the left side of the
screen. Select your next route and tick the “Harbour” in
order to see only the harbor charts used for your next
route.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
16. Is Scale minimum (SCAMIN) being applied? Can you switch off and understand the
implications?
Click “DISP” on the bottom of the left bar of the screen. Then click “SET” and
“Chart DISP”. On the opening window, click “General” tab on top.
SCAMIN is the minimum scale at which a chart object is displayed. This helps to
prevent overcrowding of chart display when a smaller scale chart for the area
is selected.
While preparing the route, SCAMIN could be switched off in order to see each
and every detail no matter the scale of the chart. Once the vessel is en route, it
can be switched on again.

SCAMIN is turned “ON”

SCAMIN is turned “OFF”

GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
17. What is the CELL NUMBER of the ENC, which is currently displayed?
Each ENC has an 8-character identifier (e.g. GB500005). The first two characters indicate the
producer nation (e.g. GB for a UK produced cell, NL for a Netherlands cell, etc.). The third
character indicates the ‘usage band’ into which the cell falls and the last 5 characters are used
as the unique identifier for that ENC. The usage band designator indicates the intended
navigational purpose of the ENC and will take one of the following values. See the “Chart
Legend” for the cell number.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 17 / 4.2.10)

18. Where would you find the DATA QUALITY PATTERN/CATZOC setting?
It is important that users know the ZOC for the area of navigation covered by the voyage as it
clearly affects both voyage planning and voyage monitoring activities and decisions.
There are six category levels – A1 (6 STARS), A2 (5 STARS), B (4 STARS), C (3 STARS), D (2
STARS) and Unclassified (data not assessed). The ZOC category allocated indicates that
particular ENC data meets minimum criteria for position and depth accuracy.

There are two ways to check the CATZOC of the area.

1- Right click on the mouse and then click on “Chart Legend” to see the CATZOC.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
2- Click “DISP” on the left bar of the screen. Then click “SET” and “Chart DISP”. On the
opening window, click “General” tab on top.

20. Change the display settings with regard to display BRIGHTNESS and CONTRAST?
Care should be taken in using brightness and / or contrast controls to adjust the
display because inappropriate settings may inhibit the visibility of information,
or at night, destroy night vision.

21. How to display own ship data?

You can see own ship's data on the Own Ship page in the menu. Own ship data shows own
ship's MMSI No, Name , Call Sign, Type, Description , Lenght , Width, Reference Bow and
other information.

22. Are chart alarms active?

The Master and officers should be ensuring that ECDIS both visual and audible alarms KEPT
ON in the ECDIS. All alarms should be carefully read, checked and passage plan should be
corrected as necessary.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 32 / 5)
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
23. Which alarms to be selected for route check?
An alarm will be triggered as soon as the vessel’s look-ahead sector overlaps one or more of
the selected chart features. The list is used in the route check. The following items have to be
always selected by Company fleet vesels:

• Traffic Separation Zone

• Inshore Traffic Zone
• Restricted Area
• Caution Area
• Offshore Production Area
• Military Practice Area
• Sea-Plane Landing Area
• Submarine Transit Lane
• Anchorage Area
• Marine Farm/Culture
• Environmentally Sens. Area (ESSA)
• Particularly Sens. Area (PSSA)
• Areas to be avoided
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 37 / 5.8 )

24. Where can you configure the Area warnings to alarm or indicate?
Click “DISP” on the bottom of the left bar of the screen. Then click “SET” and “Chart Alert”. On
the opening window, area warnings can be configured.

25. Have safety alarms been applied?

Alert is a generic name for a notice to any unsusal or potentially dangerous situation
generated within the system. An alert will be given when charted hazards enter the safety
domain, even if the hazard is not visible on the displayed portion of the ENC. The alert will be
an alarm or indication, depending on the circumstances or user settings. There are three alert
priorities: Alarm, Warning and Caution.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 14 / 4.2.3)
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
26. Demonstrate how to adjust the chart orientation (Head Up/North Up)?
To select a presentation mode, click
the triangle to show the drop down
list of presentation modes. The
presentation mode is available in
three modes:
- North up
- Course up
- Head up.

27. How is the look ahead distance defined and how to activate own ship check?
Calculation of own ship predicted movement area is done using a check area about own ship
position. The following settings directly influence the size / shape of the look-ahead sector:
Minimum Speed, Minimum Distance, Port Angle, Starboard Angle. The Company has
determined that the look-ahead distance should be set at 150% of the vessel’s emergency
stopping distance for the speed of the voyage leg that the vessel is on.
(Bridge and Engine Organization Manual Section 3.3.4)

28. What is your look-ahead frame set to? How does it show a danger/warning? Can you turn
on/off the highlight?
On right bottom of the screen, find the “Look-ahead”
menu by using the arrows. Look-ahead sector can be
set from this menu. When an object from the “Chart
Alert” menu enters the set area, audial and/or visual
alarms are generated. (Visual alarms can be seen on
right bottom corner of the screen)
The settings are done as per company ECDIS safety
limits.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
29. What is UNDER KEEL CLEARANCE? How to set?
UKC is the distance between the deepest point of the vessel's hull and the seabed at any given
time. Minimum UKC shall be defined as the minimum depth of water below the lowest point
of the vessel's hull always taking into consideration the dynamic effects. The UKC feature
continuously checks ship's draught and actual depth.
The company policy regarding the minimum UKC is;
- 20% of the Deepest Navigational Draught in Ocean Passages/Navigation, if
localized shallow spots can’t be avoided
- 15% of the Deepest Navigational Draught in Coastal Waters
- 10% of the Deepest Navigational Draught in shallow water, in narrow
channels/canals (confined waters) and rivers, at anchor, at stops within port limits and
while alongside the berth or at SBM/CBM mooring.
(Bridge and Engine Organization Manual Section 3.3.4)

30. Has the ECDIS been adjusted to the CORRECT DATUM?

WGS84 and PZ-90 are kept quite accurately aligned to the
ITRF (International Terrestrial Reference Frame) and for
normal navigational work can be considered to be
identical. ALL ECDIS (ENC) data is referenced (horizontally)
to WGS84. Positions on ENCs are referred to the World
Geodetic System 1984 Datum (WGS84) and ENCs are
regularly updated with official update information
distributed digitally.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure
Page 27 / 4.5.7 )

ECDIS also has the feature to convert the datum

to another datum. Open the “Datum” menu by
clicking on the datum on top right of the screen
and select as required from the drop-down list.

31. What is the backup system onboard your vessel?

The backup system onboard is the 2nd ECDIS. It is independent of the main ECDIS and
connected to the ships main and emergency power supply. It is also connected to systems
providing continuous position fixing, gyro compass and speed and distance measuring device.
The back-up ECDIS has the same chart database and voyage plans as the main ECDIS. Both
ECDIS must be synchronized at all times.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
32. Review past track and show playback options
Click on “OTHERS” on top left of the screen and select “Playback”.

33. How to set the CPA and TCPA limits?

CPA and TCPA are set from the TT/AIS menu on right
bottom of the screen. However, ECDIS properties for the
last two have been disabled thus CPA/TCPA settings can’t
be done on company vessels.
Company vessels only set these limits on radars as per
company bridge standing orders and master’s standing
orders.

34. How do you change vector overlays?

On the right bottom corner of the screen, find the TT/AIS menu by using arrows. Change the
vector overlays by clicking on “minutes” or “REL/T.WAT”.

(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 7 / 2.4)

38. What is the authority of Pilot on ECDIS?

The practice of the Pilot’s use of the ECDIS must be discussed during the Master Pilot
Exchange of Information. Unlimited use of ECDIS and the ability of the pilot to randomly
change settings can be detrimental to the safe navigation of the vessel. Therefore, Pilots do
not have the authority to change any setting on an ECDIS unit without asking it to the Master.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 17 / 4.2.9)
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
39. How to apply NAVIGATIONAL AREA WARNINGS OF NAVTEX AND EGC?
Navtex is connected to the ECDIS. Selected area (stations) messages are automatically shown
on the ECDIS screen. Navtex messages may not always be plotted automatically, or a failure of
Navtex-ECDIS connection might happen. In these circumstances, the OOW must plot the
printed Navtex warnings manually by using the user charts.
It will be better to select all Navtex stations to not miss any message.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 23 / 4.5.3 )

40. Create manual corrections such as PIs or No Go Areas

Manual corrections such as PIs or No Go Areas can be created in the “PLAN” mode by using
“User Chart”.

Note: Do not forget to monitor the user charts you want to reflect on the ENCs once you save them
in the ECDIS.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
41. How can you create an event marker/MOB?
Use the MOB (man oberboard) feature to mark the position of
man overboard on the screen. The MOB mark instantly appears
at the system position of your ship when the button is pressed.
Position and other data at time of man overboard are recorded
automatically in the position log of ECDIS.

42. How to record SHIP'S POSITION EVENT?

There are three ways to record ship’s position

on ECDIS.
1. LOP: Take the bearings or distances of an
object from radar or visually and apply it on
the position event menu on ECDIS,
2. GPS position,
3. Manual position where the user has to
write the coordinates manually.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
43. Prove sensor configuration and back-up (e.g. DR Mode)
In the MENU, find the “Local Sensor Settings” and select the “POSN” tab. Selection of position
sensors can be done from this menu. DR mode can also be selected by clicking on “Manual”.
(see section 12.2 Selecting Navigation Sensors, Company Type Specific Ecdis Operation
Manual – FURUNO)

44. How to use PARRALLEL INDEX LINES?

The parallel index lines are useful for keeping a
constant distance between own ship and a coastline
or a partnership when navigating. There are six sets of
PI lines and you can turn them on or off individually.
Select the PI line to process with the [Display] pull-
down list then click the [ON] or [OFF] button as
appropriate. One, two, three or six lines can be shown
- the actual number of lines shown depends on the
line interval.

45. What to adjust Ship and Route Parameters?

The purpose of the ship and route parameters is to set the basic parameters for the ship.
These parameters are relative to ship steering and they are very important to get correct
function of the integrated navigation system. They must be maintained carefully. Modification
requires a good knowledge of the parameters' importance.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
46. Conduct Scan route for next passage and configure for results
After plotting all the waypoints of the route in planning mode, select “Check Results” tab on
top and click on “Check Route”.

 AIS
 DPGS
 X-BAND ARPA RADAR
 S-BAND ARPA RADAR
 TIME SENSOR
 SPEED LOG
 AUTO PILOT
 WIND SENSOR
 TEMPERATURE SENSOR
 GYRO COMPASS
 ECHO SOUNDER
 NAVTEX
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 24 / 4.5.6)

49. How do you update your ENC?

Electronic Navigation Charts (ENC) must be up to date and appropriate for the voyage. All
updates and all charts are loaded from the designated USB Flash drive. Update disks contain
new editions of charts. ECDIS has the possibility of updates being applied manually by officer.
After completion of the updating, all corrections are to be applied on ECDIS charts.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 25 / 4.5.1)

50. How frequently do you receive chart updates?

ENCs are regularly updated with official update information distributed digitally. Vessel
should update ECDIS charts (charts corrections) in a regular basis with the weekly update
data. Company has annual agreements with the admiralty distributers to provide this data
regularly to the vessel. When the update data is received, it should be loaded in the ECDIS.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 10 / 4.1.5)
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
51. How to view date of UPDATE CHARTS?
The electronic charts must be fully corrected for the
intended voyage. On the left bottom side of the
screen click on “Log” then “Update Log” and lastly
click on “ENC” to see the ENC Install/Update
History. User can view all ENC and AIO updates
done by the USB stick in this window.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
52. How to apply MANUAL UPDATE on ENC?

In navigation mode, click on “Manual Update” button on the left side of the screen. Select the
drawing type from the drop down list and apply the manual update on the ENC. From the
“List” tab of manual updates, user can view all previous manual updates. Keep in mind that
once the manual update is done on an ENC, the update will stay on that ENC forever. It is as if
the user is making an update on a paper chart with a pen. Even though the user cancels the
update, there will only be a strike on that update meaning that it has been cancelled. Thus
making manual updates are not preferable. Using the “User Chart” for updates is always a
better choice.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
53. Show how to configure area for time dependent display?
Click on the “Manual Update” on top of the left bar of the screen. Select “Area” from the
“Drawing Type” and choose any of area types below.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
Set the area by clicking on the ENC and type the dates in the value section of the window.
Note that the date format is YYYYMMDD. After clicking “Commit” the time dependent area is
set.

The magenta “d” symbol shows that the area (or

object) is date dependent.

54. How to check ENC before the new voyage?

Electronic Navigation Charts (ENC) must be up to date and appropriate for the voyage. Below
items show the order in which charts should be updated (corrected), the method of doing so
is dependent upon the ECDIS type in use:

• Which voyage charts are required?

• Are permits available to use the required charts?
• Is the operating firmware up to date?
• Is the ENC database up to date?
• Have all corrections to charts been applied?
• Have safety settings and alarms been applied?
• Have automatic route planning function been used?
• Have route been backed up?

55. How to update and check AIO containing T&P Correction Procedure?
All ENC corrections, permanent and preliminary, are done by the service supplier ashore on a
weekly basis, and then an update is sent to the users. Some countries include these updates
in their ENCs. For those who do not include T&Ps in their ENCs, the UKHO is providing an
Admiralty Information Overlay (AIO) containing T&P information that appropriately matches
the paper-based T&Ps. Update data includes Temporary and preliminary corrections. AIO
update is received in the same package as the weekly ENC updates. However, in some cases
there are no AIO overlays in some areas. The user than should take a print-out of voyage
related T&Ps and should manually check them. In case of a missing T&P on the ENC, user has
to apply it manually by using the “User Chart”.

56. Where to show last record your “Admiralty ENC Maintenance”?

NP 133C is used by vessels to manage and maintain all ENC data received and applied to the
ECDIS in use on board as a part of the GEDEN Company Safety Management System (SMS), in
the line with the ISM Code. NP 133C should be maintained of all ENCs installed and all
updates applied to each ECDIS terminal. All ECDIS records including updating status, ENC
status, cancelled ENCs, maintenance, permits, etc. should be recorded into admiralty NP
133C. This file should be kept up-to-date under the guidance of explanations inside the NP
133C.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 39 / 5.11)
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
57. Which safety limits to adjust planned route?
Safety Limits should be activated after plotting the route at the charts, but before inserting
details such as turn criteria, and adding pilotage data, such as clearing ranges and bearings. To
use it effectively it is necessary to ensure that at least the following safety limits have been
correctly inserted:
• Shallow contour
• Safety contour
• Safety depth
• Deep contour
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 27 / 4.5.8)

58. What is the SAFETY CONTOUR?

The safety contour provides a visible boundary between "safe" and "unsafe" water with
respect to depth, and is highlighted on the display to enable easy identification.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 32 / 5.1)

59. What is the SAFETY DEPTH?

This parameter specifies the minimum depth of individual soundings and underwater hazards
that is required to avoid the vessel grounding. It is the value set by the mariner that is used by
ECDIS to portray soundings as black if they are equal to or shoaler than the value and gray if
they are deeper.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 32 / 5.2)

60. What is the SHALLOW CONTOUR/DEEP CONTOUR?

The shallow contour is used to further subdivide the unsafe areas (shallow and very shallow).
The deep contour is used to subdivide the safe areas (deep and very deep).
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 33 / 5.3)

61. On the display what is the safety contour being viewed?

Please note that chart alert settings have been adjusted randomly to show the contours as
below.
GENEL DENİZCİLİK NAKLİYATI A.Ş.
62. How to set Safety Parameters / Alarm Sets Minimum Values as per company procedure?
Deep contour, Safety Contour, Shallow Contour, Safety Depth, Safety Height, Look Ahead
Sector and UKC Limit have calculated minimum values for each leg. These formulas can be
found in the Company ECDIS Safety Limits Poster. Also these minimum values can be changed
by Master’s decision. Master can use his discretion to reduce/increase permissible values.

63. Who is responsibilty of safety parameters values?

Master determines route parameters (Cross Track Deviation Limits, Speed Plan etc.), safety
parameters (Safety Depth, Look-ahead distance etc.) and verifies the parameters been input
correctly. The Master should ensure that ECDIS both visual and audible alarms are KEPT ON in
the ECDIS.
(Company Generic Ecdis Operation Manual and Procedure Page 6 / 2.2)

64. What should be marked on the electronic charts?

The passage plan should be written on each ECDIS chart. Excessive information in the
navigational areas must be avoided by recording the information away from the track and
drawing attention to it by a line or reference letter. The following should be marked on the
ECDIS, where it enhances safe navigation:

• Tracks with heading notation,

• Waypoints with wheel over positions, when applicable,
• Parallel indexing (not from floating objects unless they have been first checked for position);
• Chart changes;
• Methods and frequency of position fixing;
• Prominent navigation and radar marks;
• No-go areas (the excessive marking of no-go areas should be discouraged – see below);
• Landfall targets and lights;
• Clearing lines and bearings;
• Transits, heading marks and leading lines;
• Significant tides or current;
• Safe speed and necessary speed alterations;
• Changes in machinery status;
• Minimum under keel clearance;
• Positions where the echo sounder should be activated;
• Crossing and high density traffic areas;
• Safe distance off;
• Anchor clearance;
• Contingency plans;
• Abort positions;
• VTS and reporting points, etc.
• Before Arrival M/E Ahead and Astern Test Position.
(SMS form 201018 Passage Plan 9-25)

65. Which chart alerts to apply for each leg?

The system will calculate chart alerts using user-defined channel limit for routes. Danger areas
are shown highlighted if safety contour or user-chosen chart alert areas are crossed by the
planned route.
You can generate a list of chart alerts that cross by the planned route. This can be done by
entering safety contour, plan a route by defining waypoints and other necessary information
and select dangerous objects to be monitored during route monitoring (Safety Contour,
Restricted Area, Traffic Separation Zone, Buoy etc.). This way, only the checked alarms will be
generated in the list

66. How do you set a date-dependent view? Explain why this is used?
Click on “Chart INFO” on the left bar of the screen. Then
click on “Viewing Dates”.

There are three

selections on the left
side of the window
which appears on
the screen. By
selecting a single
date, you can make
your ENC display all
information on that
specific date. By
selecting a date
range, ECDIS will
show you all
information which
will be valid through
that period of time.
For example on Chart 1 of the ECDIS, there is a date dependent object. If your ECDIS is set to
“AUTO: Today” (as above) you will not see the buoy when you first open the Chart 1. But if
you select “Single Date” and set the date to 26 Aug 2014 (because the end date of the object
is 27-08-2014), the buoy will appear on Chart 1.

Please note that if any other selection than “AUTO: Today” is selected, ECDIS gives you a
warning on the bottom of the screen (as above)
The purpose of time dependent display is to see the future warnings while planning or
monitoring the route.

For example;
A cautionary area and a buoy will be set on 28 Apr 2020 and your ETA to that area is 03 May
2020. The date you are creating and planning your route is 25 April 2020. After you do the
“Route Check” on the planning mode, you will not see any warning about the area nor the
buoy in the results.

Date is 25 Apr 2020

Only 3 alerts for a caution area on

the ENC.

However if you select a date range and set the end date to 03 May 2020, the buoy and the
area will then show up on the screen and the related warning will appear in the results after
you do the “Route Check”.

Date range is 27 Apr 2020 - 03

May 2020

Additional alerts for date

dependent objects have been
generated.

To conclude, if the voyage is going to take a long time or if the user is planning it much earlier,
the date range should be adjusted accordingly and route check should be done afterwards.

67. Are all Navigating officers familiar with ECDIS symbols & abbreviation?
Standard defines how to display the corresponding information on an ECDIS screen. Usually
symbols and abbreviations used on the ECDIS are internationally used standard ECDIS symbols
and abbreviations which would enable the ECDIS of foreign countries to be used with little
difficulty by the mariner of any nation. However this should be carefully checked and entire
bridge team should be well familiar of symbols before using the ECDIS.
