1. Urban land use mapping is a suitable technique to assess
different land use types in an urban environment like Main Street in Cumbernauld Village. ULUM involves surveying and categorising urban land use with the output being a colored map with a key which shows the types and intensities of land use in an area. 2. Preparation: - Decide on the area for the study. - Decide on the sampling strategy. - Decide whether to survey both sides of the road. - Decide whether land use is recorded at ground level only or at upper floors of the buildings too. - Have a suitable scale OS map while surveying. - Note down street names. Gathering data: - Produce a base map including appropriate classification eg RICEPOTS. - Visit the site and record the land use (photos and sketches may enhance the base map). - Color code the base map to show variations in building height. Following up: - Use all the gathered data to draw a land use map, color coding and annotating as appropriate. The map must contain north points, a scale, title and a key. It can be used to calculate percentages of different land uses.
