Formula:-

The Short time temperature rise in a ground conductor, or the required conductor size as a function
of conductor current,can be obtained from following formula.
I
(as per IEEE-80-2013 Eq-37)
Amm2 = TCAP x 10
-4 K0 + T m
In
tc x αr x pr K0 + T a

Where,
I = rms current in kA

Amm2 = Conductor cross section in mm 2

Tm = Maximum allowable temperature in 0C
Ta = Ambient temperature in 0C
tc = Duration of current in Sec

αr = Thermal coefficient of resistivity at reference temperature T r in 1/ 0C

pr = resistivity of the ground conductor at reference temperature T r in μΩ-cm

o
K0 = (1 / αr ) - Tr in C

TCAP = Thermal capacity per unit volume in J/cm 3 0C

Input Data:-
I = 25 kA
tc = 1 Sec
Tm = 1083 0
C
Ta = 40 0
C
αr = 0.0039 1/ C
0
( Based on IEEE Std 80-2013 Table-1 )
pr = 1.72 μΩ-cm (Page No.46 )
K0 = 234 0
C
TCAP = 3.4 J/cm3 0C
Calculation:-
25

-4
Amm2 = 3.400 x 10 234 + 1083
In
1 x 0.0039 x 1.7 234 + 40

25

= 0.00034 1317
In
0.0067596 274

Amm2 = 88.96 mm2

Result:-
Size of the Earth Strip Selected is 100mm2 (25x4) Copper Flat Conductor
