IRIS Assignment

Question 1 - Some of these children have disabilities. Do you think people’s

perceptions of children with disabilities play a role in their success? Why or why
not?
Yes, there are a variety of ways in which people’s attitudes towards children with
disabilities can have a big impact on their achievement. For children with
disabilities, people frequently have lower expectations which might limit their
chances. A student with a disability may not receive the same degree of
challenge, guidance, or motivation from classmates, their instructors or even
parents if they are expected to do less, which could impede his or her
development and success. The language that we also use when communicating or
referring to children with disabilities is influenced by people’s perceptions.

Question 2 - Based on your own perceptions, how would you feel about having
these children in your classroom?
To be completely honest, I used to have a fear of having students with disabilities
in my classroom. I didn’t feel that I had the confidence in being able to aid the
students in the right direction of learning. I didn’t feel as if I had the skills to be
able to teach them and help them learn at the pace that they need to. As time
went by, I feel that I am prepared to have these children in my classroom. It
would be a joy to have these children in my classroom, an inspiration to us all.
They should be treated with the same respect as others in the classroom.

Question 3 – If you were put in charge of a movie production about a person who
is blind, what type of perceptions would you want to make sure your film
portrayed?
If I were to take part in the making of a film about a blind person, I would work
with the blind community and cast a blind actor in the role to be able to get an
understanding. Making sure the audience understands that they are just as
capable as those of us who are not blind, they just go about things differently
would be the major point of view I would want to get across. I have also heard
that it is said when one sense is lost, another becomes stronger, and that would
be an amazing fact I would want to portray in my film.
