Observation 1:

For my first observation, I observed Mr. Bruna start the class by doing a phonemic awareness.
Mr. Bruna had students sounding out ending, middle, and beginning sounds. After the student’s recess I
sat in on a small group. Students were given ‘popcorn’ words, they used these words to create
sentences. Students then read a book together. After the book the students found the main idea and
supporting details.

Observation 2:

For my second observation, since it was Valentine’s day students worked on a Valentine’s day
themed reading assignment. Students read the story about a Valentine’s party and then found what the
main idea of the story was, supporting details, and the descriptors in the story; This was for
comprehension. Mr. Bruna and I walked around the classroom and helped students by having them read
certain parts of the story that had what part they were booking for. I saw that second grade students still
need help with identifying the main idea and supporting details.

Observation 3:

For my third observation, I observed Mr. Bruna start the class off by labeling words with
students. Students wrote on their boards the word on the board and labeled the different parts of the
word. One student would go up to the board and label the word for the class. For small group time I
walked around the class and observed students reading, listening to reading, and writing stories. I helped
Natasha with some vocabulary words for her animal paper.

Observation 4:

For my fourth observation, I observed students writing A-E, E-E, I-E, O-E, and U-E words which
connected to phonological awareness. Students created words that Mr. Bruna read off by using letter
magnets. I walked around the classroom and helped students use the correct letters; this was for
vocabulary. I took my small group to the back table and the students took turns reading paragraphs. For
this group I definitely needed more time since I wasn’t able to get through all of the supporting details
with them.

Observation 5:

For my fifth observation, I observed Mr. Bruna doing another phonemic lesson, students were
saying long vowel sounds together. Due to an early out due to weather Mr. Bruna had me take my small
group earlier to make sure I was able to read with my students and do our worksheet. Students worked
on book comprehension. Management is very important so that students stay on track and are able to
learn. I managed my groups when they stopped paying attention by getting the student on the right page
and pointing to where we are.
