Table 8,00-2: Spark Plug Troubleshooting
TROUBLESHOOTING
FIRING TIP APPEARANCE
Light coating of whitish ash, uniformly
deposited,
CONDITION
Normal with medium to high ash lube oils.
REMEDY
No change.
Excessive ash buildup,
High oil consumption. Wrong lube il oil
hhas high ash content, Poor oil control
around the valve guides and rings.
Change the engine lube oil ype. Change
the engine lube oil, Inspect and replace
wom parts as necessary.
Black ol fouling deposits.
Poor ell control, Engine is too lightly
loaded.
Replace wom parts as necessary. Adjust
the engine load
Gap bridging.
Contaminated or “dirty” fuel gas.
‘Add a fuel fiter. Use a more “open
electrode type of plug.
Carbon fouling.
‘Spark plug firing tip temperature too low.
Engine i too lightly loaded. High oi!
consumption.
‘Change the plug heat range. Agjust the
tengine load. Inspect and replace worn
parts as necessary.
Electrode is burning.
‘Spark plug firing tip temperature is too
high,
(Change the plug heat range.
Wear on side ofthe electrode,
Reversed polariy ofthe ignition coil
Rewire the ignition cols correctly
‘Aluminum contamination on plug.
Engine is operated with severe
detonation, causing piston damage.
Inspect piston with a bore scope; replace
wom parts asnecessary. Check the spark
timing, fuel gas octane, Reduce the
engine load,
Blue or green deposit on plug and valve,
Cobalt fouling from worn Stelite valve
Replace the valve and valve seat.

NOTE: See Figure 8.00-2,
1. Determine engine’s compression ratio from
nametag, timing tag or by researching engine's
serial number.
