Background of the Lesson

Animals play an important yet unique role in human life. We use animals for our own benefit, and
sometimes forget that they are also living things. There are times that we forget to treat them like humans.
Just like humans, animals also have developed parts of the body adapted for survival in a certain
environment. This adaptation can protect them from predators and from harsh weather. There are a
number of ways that animals can adapt.

Have you seen these animals?
Can you name them all?
Where do they live?
These are the animals in which we usually see in our environment.
We see them most of the time in our farms and ponds. These animals help our ecosystem to
maintain the balance.
Have you ever wonder how they adapt in their natural habitat?
Animals are unique, they have different body structure in order for them to survive in their
habitats. The different structure or bahavior that helps an organism survive in its environment is what we
called adaptation.
For an instance; fish have gills for breathing underwater and scales for their protection. Horse
habitate the land they have fur for protection, while the birds have feathers for them to fly as well as to
protect themeselves. Both land and terrestial animals have lungs for breathing.
Some animals animals protect themselves against their enemies through protective coloration
called camouflage. Other animals imitate the shapes, smell, taste, color or even the sounds of other
animals. This behavior is called mimicry.
