E Waste

E waste is discarded electronics such as, phones, computers, and televisions. They are thrown out
when they are near its ending of its “useful life”. Computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, and
fax machines are common electronic products. Many of these products can be reused, refurbished,
or recycled.

Examples:

 Televisions
 Phones
 Computers
 Speakers
 Anything that uses electricity.

Problems of e waste in the environment:

 Serious environmental problems due to toxic chemicals.


 Lead
 Mercury
 Arsenic
 These can pollute the soil, water, and air.
 Disrupt our ecosystem.
 Health
 Flame retardants
 Cadmium
 Hydrocarbon
 Beryllium

Solutions/Ideal solutions:

 Avoid purchasing new electronics that can’t be reused or recycled.


 Don’t keep purchasing new products every time it comes out.
 Instead repair broken equipment.
 Reuse the electronic devices by donating them to charity, friends, or family.
 Recycle the electronic devices.
 Buy environmentally friendly electronics.
 Stop using electronics in general.
 Recycle electronics and batteries in e-waste recycling bins located around campus.
