MECH 2202

◼ Multi-Body & Master model
◼ GD&T
◼ Welding drawings
◼ AutoCAD
MECH 2202

Ordinate Dimensions
◼ Simplified location dimensioning for
complex views (often many holes / slots)
◼ Ordinate dims can be included in multiple
orthographic drawing views
◼ X and Y distances from a “datum” point in
the view
◼ Values only, no X or Y identifier
◼ Values are typically shown as positive only
MECH 2202

Ordinate Dimensions
MECH 2202

Ordinate Dimensions

◼ Often used for complex drawing views

◼ Reduced clutter
◼ Matches requirements for CNC machine tools
◼ Locate positions relative to 0,0
◼ Often combined with hole charts or table to
further simplify the drawing.
MECH 2202

Ordinate Dims in Inventor

◼ Place origin marker (on
first ordinate dimension)
in view (0, 0 point of
reference)
◼ Note: Use Ordinate
dimension, not Ordinate
Set to place origin marker.
◼ Single extension line
from point.
◼ X or Y distance from
(0,0) point
MECH 2202

Ordinate Dims and Origin Indicator

◼ X and Y ordinate values
are ALWAYS relative to the
origin indicator placed in
the view.
◼ You can move the origin
indicator by dragging it
(snap to reference) or
through a dialog (if no
geometry at desired
location).
MECH 2202

Ordinate Dims and Origin Indicator

◼ Dimensions automatically
update to reflect change
in origin position.
◼ All ordinate values are
shown as positive values
(distance from origin)
◼ You can add – sign if
required (Options)
MECH 2202

Align Text for ordinate dimensions in X

◼ Horizontal text for X

ordinate dimension leads
to clutter/jogs.
◼ Create Y dimensions first
◼ Right-click any dimension
> Edit Dimension Style
◼ Text tab. Set Vertical
dimension text to Inline –
Vertical
◼ Create X dimensions
MECH 2202

Jogged Ordinate Dimensions

◼ Ordinate dimensions can be jogged to
reduce clutter
◼ Inventor may place jogs during creation
◼ Drag text or green dots during edit
◼ Note: Avoid jogs if possible
MECH 2202

Ordinate Dim Alignment

◼ Use Arrange Dimensions tool to tidy
ordinate dimensions
◼ Does not work with Ordinate sets

◼ Group X and Y dims along a single edge

where possible.
MECH 2202

Ordinate Dimension Sets

◼ Creates a group of ordinate dimensions
(one direction only) that act more as a
single entity.
◼ Can edit individual items in set
◼ Can force + and – values for dimensions
either side of origin (Right-click > Options)
◼ Easier to control alignment
MECH 2202

Baseline and Chain Dimensions

◼ In addition to ordinate dimensions,
baseline and chain dimensions and
dimension sets available.
◼ Baseline
◼ First selection becomes base line
◼ Chain
◼ Formats dimensions to fit (use caution)

Poll Q1 – Click the best answer

▪ Ordinate dimensions are used for:

A. Size dimensions
B. Location dimensions
C. Hole dimensions
D. Any of the above

▪ Use the following tool to modify “X” ordinate
dimension text so that it takes up less space.

A. Format Dimension Style

B. New Dimension Style
C. Replace Dimension Style
D. Edit Dimension Style

Hole Table
◼ Tables often used with ordinate
dimensions or to even replace them
◼ Table contains hole information
◼ Ordinate dimensions can be used to locate
hole centres
◼ Optionally, a Hole Table may include hole
locations and descriptions
MECH 2202

Table Creation
◼ Table appearance
controlled by table
style.
◼ Can create table by
selection individual
holes or all holes in a
view.
MECH 2202

Table Creation
◼ Table Examples:
◼ As with other
annotations,
controlled by Style
◼ The default hole
table style includes X
& Y data and hole
description
MECH 2202

Table Creation
◼ Table Examples:
◼ If you have ordinate
dims, don’t repeat
that information in a
table
◼ Similar to parts list,
choose columns
(remove X & Y)
MECH 2202

Table Creation
◼ Table Examples:
◼ You can “roll up”
table to show a
single row for each
hole type
◼ You can optionally
add a Quantity
column
MECH 2202

Table Creation
◼ Table Roll Up:
◼ Combines rows for same
hole
◼ Optionally delete tags on
Rollup – leaves a single
tag for each hole type in
the view
◼ Tag links hole to table
(A, B, C in example)

Table, you are left with only one hole identifier
(i.e “A”) for each hole type in the drawing view.
