EDUC 104 Facilitating Learner-Centered Teaching

1. Cite the advantages and disadvantages of the different learning modalities presented in
the study.

In the study, there are three modes of teaching presented: (1) Classroom teaching (Space
and time restricted for face-to-face live interaction), (2) Online teaching via direct
contact; and (3) Online teaching via indirect contact.

2. Make a reflection on how the different learning modalities affect learning process of students.

Since the beginning of the formal education system, traditional teaching or classroom teaching
was used as a learning modality. It provides a live face-to-face interaction between the teachers and the
students. This kind of learning modality helped teachers to pull students into collaborative learning
projects. As a result, students are able to learn from one another, to create their own ideas and to
achieve the learning targets or goals. Teachers can also modify their teaching style and instructional
methods based on their students’ needs. Classroom teaching supports social development of students.
The face-to-face interaction helps them to build their social skills.

Other learning modalities became well known when a certain respiratory illness known as the
COVID-19 intervene the whole world. Due to lockdown and the New Normal, online teaching platforms
became popular. Online Teaching via Direct Contact wherein students do not need to travel but be
online on time in order to learn and participate in vis-a-vis interaction. This learning modality requires
high speed data connectivity. Here, the students can save time and energy because they will just listen
to discussion through Google Meet or Zoom. They’ll be safer and away from having the virus because
they’ll be at home. The submission of activities and assignments become easier which can be done in a
few tap then submit it to online platform like the famous Google Classroom. Students can also ask
questions and clear their doubts about the lecture by simply sending their teachers an email or chat.

Another one is the Online Teaching via Indirect Contact. Students are able to study and learn the
lecture through recorded discussion of the teacher and the given PDF or word. This modality promotes
group activities and shows higher efficiency when it comes to submission of activities and assignments.
Students are having less hesitation to ask their questions to the teachers. And since every lesson are
given through recorded lecture and through file, students can open those learning materials during their
convenient time or as long as it’s before the deadline.

Nevertheless, whatever type of learning modalities will be used in teaching as long as it will
serve its purpose then we will be able to impart knowledge to our students. We should give value and
importance in our education system so that the creation of globally competitive and responsible
individuals is continuous and everlasting.
