ABSTRACT

The current study explores the difficulties faced by working students in pursuing

college education, especially in higher learning institutions in coping with the effects and

challenges of working while studying. The study used qualitative research, specifically

the phenomenological approach in gathering the data. Interviews were conducted to

substantiate the study. The informants were six working students from different grade

levels from the Province of Metro Manila, Quezon City. The findings of the current study

show that the informants fully understood the concept of working while studying and

considered it as a financial necessity and self-improvement but at the same time as an

obstacle in their life. The informants exposed several positive and negative effects such

as on personal needs, self-esteem and time management. Also, the challenges such as

time constraints and commitment to their studies. Furthermore, the coping mechanisms

they use to overcome the difficulties they experience such as self-soothing, distraction,

crisis plan, etc. This study is important as many students are working while enrolled in

higher education. They may experience time constraints managing the responsibilities of

both student and worker. Thus, it is significant to understand the difficulties they

experience that may affect the future of their academic studies. This study provides some

implications and recommendations for working students to overcome the effects and

challenges. They include time management, commitment, discipline, and responsibility.

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The most powerful weapon that can change the world is Education. But If you

are a student who is currently employed, what options do you have? Among students in

universities, their common phenomenon is working while studying. Today's students are

more likely than ever to provide financial support for their family through their studies.

Their aim was to find a job that would provide them with the necessary funds for their

studies (Asdalie, 2019).

Having a dual role which is working while studying can be both a source of

fulfillment and worry. Money plays the primary role in school, resulting in students who

accumulate significant debt to pay off. Numerous students work while attending school,

which in turn has an impact on their learning. Due to the fear of being distracted by a

part-time job, some students overlook these opportunities (Kozinsky, 2017).

Twenty percent of students work in retail and food/beverage industries according

to the Statista Research Department (2016). The struggle is experienced by most working

students because they need to maintain their grades to prevent them from failing. At the

same time, they also need to meet the requirements needed to keep their jobs.
2

According to the new study of American Education Research Association (2023),

students who work while enrolled in college are about 20% less likely to complete their

degrees because many are unable to concentrate on their studies, some have health

problems, and others are unable to cope due to insufficient funds. Also in accordance

with the Labor Force Survey Public Use File (2020) conducted by the Philippine

Statistics Authority, 1,052,000 students in the country are working and studying at the

same time.

According to Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) Journals

(2022), a large majority (90%) from working students, claimed to be very stressed and

had difficulty completing their final year of studies. Working can worsen the stress

already present in students, making it even more difficult to combine work and personal

life. When students devote too much time to outside work, it can turn their attention away

from their academics, make them feel lost along the way, and severely affect their

academic progress.

However, the purpose of this study is to identify the difficulties working students

experience in studying while working which is situated in Quezon City.

3

Statement of the Problem

The research will be conducted to explore the difficulties in studying

while working of working students in the Province of Metro Manila, Quezon City.

The researchers seek to answer the following:

researchers about the struggles of working students. The researcher will have a

wider understanding of the obligations working students experience.

5

6. To Future Researchers. The outcome of the study will be beneficial to future

researchers. This study may be a foundation of new research and use this study to

be their starting point.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study will take place in Metro Manila, Quezon City. It is a great place to

conduct interviews because it hosts a significant number of working students. The scope

of our study is for exploring the difficulties faced by working students in pursuing their

college education. The number of participants that is included in this research are six (6)

and there are;

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

In this chapter, the following related conceptual and research literature are

presented and these were reviewed from various credible articles, journals, academic

books, and published thesis.

Foreign Literature

Effects of working while studying

Having a job in high school can have its positive and negative effects on the

student and the high school experience. Some students really enjoy working while in high

school and others dread it the minute they start their first job (Naylor, 2021). Thus, in a

study conducted by Journal of International Students Organisation (2014), 20

international students were interviewed about their experiences of being working

students. Results of the study revealed the participants’ working experience has positive

effects on their health and well-being. Some of the benefits of working include

development of students’ interpersonal relation and communication skills and these could

serve as assets for their future job prospects. On the other hand, all of the research

participants reported experiencing various forms of stress. The students negatively

experienced physical and emotional characteristics of stress in the form of tiredness, lack
10

of sleep, lack of appetite, shouting, headaches, homesickness, anger, distress and

frustration.

In addition to the information already provided, according to a study conducted

by Faizuddin et al. (2020), the research participants stated that the positive effects

include building good character, time management, and self-development such as

becoming more strong and independent. Alternatively, the participants did not

specifically reveal the negative effects of working while studying. However, this has

supported the idea that working while studying has effects for students that can either be

positive or negative. Thus, giving us more opportunity to tackle this variable in our

research.

Challenges

According to the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)

International University (2022), working students often face unique challenges that can

interfere with their ability to succeed in school. In terms of academic performance, the

main problem is time management and the result of their study performance depends

greatly on the time they put into it. If they put more time to study, they will get good

results, and vice versa, they will get bad results when they put more time on work

(Faizuddin et al., 2020). Moreover, in accordance with Lumugdan (2022), there are 4

main challenges that working students commonly face. First, lack of sleep, because of
11

workload in both work and school, working students don’t get enough sleep. Second,

there is no time for extra activities in school. If you’re a working student, you understand

how working overtime sounds better than participating in extracurricular activities at

school. Of course, it is not because you do not want to join in those exciting and

enjoyable activities, but that extra income can significantly affect your financial situation.

Third, little interaction with family and friends. Because of a hectic schedule both in

working and studying, having time with your loved ones might be difficult at times.

Lastly, dealing with stress. Balancing your social life, work, studies, and personal life is

challenging. And managing the stress that surrounds those factors is also a challenge.

According to Dallas Cosmetic Dental (2019), it is natural to experience stress

every once in a while, but stress can be incredibly harmful to your everyday life and

health if you experience it too often or too strongly. Learning to limit and handle your

stress can increase your quality of life such that it provides a number of benefits,

including improved physical and mental health, increased productivity, and better

decision making making it your life far more enjoyable. Thus, in the case of working

students, learning to manage stress can help them to reduce their stress levels, manage

their emotions, increase their academic performance, and improve their physical health in

a dual role (working & studying). These are essential for helping working students lead

happier and more successful lives (Green, 2022)

12

These pieces of literature are additional help that added credibility to the purpose

of conducting this research in order to identify the difficulties the working students faced

in pursuing their college education.

Coping Mechanisms

It was mentioned that working while studying has both positive and negative

effects. Also experiences countless challenges. Therefore, students have ways to cope

with the effects and challenges they experience for having a dual role. In a study

conducted by Penn State (2015), students throughout Penn State Harrisburg’s campus

were surveyed with open-ended questions about how they cope with stress. Results of the

study revealed that most students cope with stress by exercising, spending time with

family and friends, doing their favorite hobbies such as listening to music, drinking their

favorite drinks and playing video games. Some students just sleep, cry their stress out,

and also give themselves a word of affirmation such as keep moving, do your best and

work through it. In addition to the results already provided from the study, one student

stated that meditating and seeing a counselor is how he/she copes with stress.

According to GoodTherapy (2018), the use of effective coping skills can often

help improve mental and emotional well-being. People who are able to adjust to stressful
13

or traumatic situations (and the lasting impact these incidents may have) through

productive coping mechanisms may be less likely to experience anxiety, depression, and

other mental health concerns as a result of painful or challenging events. And if you

experience stress and don’t know how to cope, working with a psychologist, therapist, or

counselor in a therapeutic relationship gives you an opportunity to explore your thoughts,

feelings, worries without judgment, and patterns of behavior. It can also help you learn

and develop new coping strategies and techniques to better manage daily stressors and

symptoms associated with your diagnosis, and practice self-reflection and awareness

(Lindberg, 2020).

The information above will help the purpose of this study to identify what coping

mechanisms the working students have to cope with the effects and stress resulting from

having dual roles (working & studying).

Local Literature
Effects of working while studying

In a study conducted by Abenoja et al. (2019), five (5) Senior High School

working students were interviewed about their experiences of having a dual role

(studying & working). The research findings from the interview disclose that the positive

effects on the participants is they have a happy feeling, that they enjoy what they do and

develop good time management. Also, they become more responsible and improve their

personal life. On the other hand, one working student participant stated that the negative
14

the effect of working while studying depends on the situation. He/she cannot manage

her/his time efficiently; it will take a longer time to complete the study. He/she has to

complete her/his draft of dissertation for several years.

Also, according to Online Education (2022), some of the positive effects of being

a working student are; first, being able to gain financial security, with the presence of a

stable income source it helps you budget your money for your different responsibilities

without having a debt. Second, you develop self-management. With the skill of

self-management it pushes you to assess your list of priorities. You can classify tasks

according to their urgency and importance and as a result you can make them on time.

While in the case of negative effects, there was only one that was mentioned and it is

dealing with stress. And according to Philstar Global (2012) in an interview, two of the

working students said “Balancing both school and work isn’t easy”. “Stress is inevitable.

The only way to get rid of it is to deal with it”. This proves that being a working student

is so stressful.

Challenges

In a study conducted by Coral et al. (2020) in terms of academic performance, the

result of the study showed that in terms of working students, the financial aspect is the

major challenge experienced by working students. They cannot comply with their

schoolworks because of a lack of money that leads them to work overtime.

15

Still, according to Online Education (2022), the challenge that working students

commonly faced is time constraints. They have to divide their attention between work

and school. This means that they’re going to make some sacrifices in certain parts of their

life to do their studies on time. Additionally, in terms of academic performance, Patulan

et al. (2022) stated that working students experience difficulty managing both roles

because students face time constraints with their schoolwork that lead them to have bad

grades.

According to Acaso et al. (2019) study, some challenges of being a working

student are complying with class activities, and academic achievements. Dealing with

having a dual role (studying & working) is difficult enough and to keep up with class

activities and gain academic achievements would be also quite tough to accomplish

regarding how it is hard enough to balance school & work.

Coping mechanism

Coping is the use of one or various types of mechanisms that are intended to

reduce psychological stress (Gurvich et al., 2021). Having your own ways to cope is

important for the reason of being able to deal with your stress and any problem you have

in your lives. Thus, Jadia et al. (2023) conducted both qualitative and quantitative study.

Firstly, researchers interviewed 15 working students and were asked what their coping

mechanism was. Based on the results of the interview, eight coping mechanisms were

stated as the coverage of the survey for the quantitative study and the eight coping
16

mechanisms of working students are escape-avoidance, grit, leisure, planful

problem-solving, religiosity, resilience, seeking social support, and time management.

Secondly, researchers surveyed 206 out of the respondents randomly selected among the

320 working students from public secondary schools in San Jose West District for the

school year 2021-2022 to know what is the most common preferred coping mechanism of

working students. Results of the survey is that working students preferred to use positive

coping mechanisms, especially grit, because having grit means a combination of

determination and dedication, of passion and perseverance (Limanco, 2018). And Jadia et

al. (2023) also stated that we need a high level of determination for accepting and dealing

with stressful situations.

According to a study still conducted by Abenoja et al. (2019), one of the working

student participants stated that by doing exercise, and balancing the nutrient of food will

be able to manage time fully which help her/his to overcome or cope with what he/she is

experiencing any kind of negative effects and challenges. And the other one participant

also stated that the first thing that he/she usually does is self-reflection. It is necessary

because sometimes we are to blame for the problem. We need to dominate ourselves first

so we can manage our surroundings. In other words, as working students, we must be

prepared to handle any problems that may arise.

17

Theoretical Framework
The theoretical framework of this study is based on the Role Strain theory by

William Goode published in (1960). This theory talks about the difficulty of meeting the

responsibilities of a particular role in life. According to this theory, individuals who have

multiple roles and expectations, such as working students, tend to be strained or stressed.

Because working and studying combined may take up more time and responsibilities that

lead to stress. This stress leads to struggles in balancing study, work, and personal life. As

a result, an individual is not capable of performing their roles as well as they could be if

they had fewer duties(Creary & Gordon 2016).

Key components of role strain theory

Role conflict occurs when the position and roles an individual occupies contain

coinciding and contradictory expectations (Kahn et al. 1964, Edwards 2002). For working

students, role conflict may arise when their academic and work responsibilities clash. For

example, if their work schedule and class schedule coincide, it may cause a conflict.

Because of the conflict, it will lead to stress.

Role overload, on the other hand, happens when an individual has many roles and

they encounter difficulties in meeting the roles’ demands. For example, working students,

for instance their job and academic responsibilities coincide and it has a lot of workload.

This can lead to stress, pressure, and difficulty.

18

Lastly, role ambiguity, in contrast to role conflict and role overload, refers to

individuals who are unclear or lack clear information about their roles, how to fulfill

these expectations or the consequences of role performance (Mobily 1991). Role

ambiguity can be relevant to working students as they balance the pressure of working

and studying duties. Working students have dual roles, which are being a student and at

the same time being a worker. Role ambiguity can arise when they have difficulties

balancing their roles. Leading to uncertainty about how they will fulfill their work and

school responsibilities.

Role Strain Theory Model

19

The model explains the Role Strain Theory of William Goode with its key

components; Role Overload, Role Conflict, and Role Ambiguity. This theory is related to

the research because it examines the struggles working students encounter. This is

relevant to the study of the researchers because they aim to explore the difficulties faced

by working students. It is important to understand the struggles that working students

face and people with multiple tasks or responsibilities, may experience.

Role strain theory helps researchers understand how individuals balance their

multiple roles and responsibilities they engage in and the problems that they encounter

when those roles become demanding and stressful. It can be used to make strategies that

help to manage role pressure, such as better time management, seeking for help, or

making adjustments to roles and responsibilities. This theory helps working students for

everyone to be aware of the struggles and challenges working students encounter in

balancing their work and academic responsibilities

20

Conceptual Framework

Figure 1. Illustrates the conceptual framework of the study that shows the difficulties that

working students experience in some concepts in the statement of the problem that is

indicated in this study. The process shows method or how the researchers will gather data

and analysis. The contribution will have significant results, this will indicate the general

view of assessing the positive and negative effects in terms of academic performance,

self, and financials. Also, what are the challenges the working students face and what

they do to cope with it (coping mechanism).

21

Chapter 3

METHOD OF RESEARCH

Research Methods and Design

This chapter mainly concentrates in the upbringing of the research methods and

procedures, in which way this is adhered to by the researchers in being able to explore the

lived experiences and perspectives of individuals to which it can gain comprehensive

understanding of the Difficulties Faced by Working Students in Pursuing College

Education. This will serve as a detailed exploration of individuals' perspectives, allowing

researchers to explore the underlying meanings, social contexts, and subjective

interpretations that shape the few human occurrences.

The researcher will employ the qualitative method to determine the difficulties

they face while juggling their employment responsibilities alongside their academic

pursuits. The study will follow a phenomenological approach, aiming to capture the lived

experiences and subjectives perspectives of the students pursuing college education. The

qualitative research method is a subjective approach to data collection and analysis that

includes observations, interviews, and focus groups. This method is particularly useful

for investigating complex social phenomena such as student experiences and perceptions

of pursuing college education. The responses of the participants to these questions will
22

provide valuable insights into their perspectives which can be used to develop their

wellbeing in order to improve their education outcomes. In this research, the qualitative

method is also to be used in the methods of our interviews. The qualitative method

contains an explorative method that gives deeper insights. Qualitative research has the

goal of generating hypotheses and further investigation, qualitative tends to answer the

questions of hows and whys, more specifically, the use of open ended questions. The use

of qualitative methods in this research is to be able to see insights of the point of views

that working students encounter in their daily life cycles.

Sampling Procedure

In this study, the researchers used non-probability sampling, specifically

judgmental sampling. Non-probability sampling is a technique where the researchers

choose their samples based on their judgment or specific criteria, without using random

selection. In the case of judgmental sampling, also called purposive sampling or

authoritative sampling, is a non-probability sampling technique in which researchers can

select particular participants or respondents that are relevant to the research objectives

(Fleetwood, 2023). The respondents of the study were selected one (1) Grade 11 student,

one (1) Grade 12 student, one (1) 1st year college student, one (1) 2nd year college

student, one (1) 3rd year college student, and one (1) Graduating college student. The

selected participants will come from the Province of Metro Manila, Quezon City.
23

This method is ideal for the researchers because the respondents were purposely

chosen to strategically satisfy the objective. The researchers presume that through

judgmental sampling the researchers can select participants who possess knowledge and

experience in the field of being a working student. It will also help the researchers to save

time and money. Researchers often believe that they can obtain a representative sample

by using sound judgment, which results in saving time and money (Black K, 2010). In

addition, selecting working students as participants is helpful to the researchers because

they have the qualifications to answer specific questions that are relevant to the topic.

Participants of the Study

In this study, the participants are Grade 11, Grade 12, First, Second, Third, and

Graduating Year of College Students from the Province of Metro Manila, Quezon City.

We will be holding an interview with one (1) student per grade level. We chose one

student per grade level because we would like to know if there are differences in their

struggles. Also, because their expenses are higher compared to lower grade levels. Six (6)

students will be included in this investigation.

Table 1. shows the distribution of the participants.

Sources of Data

The instrument that we use in our research is Interview. It is defined as the

method of asking questions to gain qualitative data (Taherdoost, 2021) The Method that

we use to collect data is through Semi Structured Interview and according to (Tegan

George. 2022) A semi-structured interview is a data collection method that relies on

asking questions within a predetermined thematic framework. However, the questions are

not set in order or in phrasing. We decided to use a semi structured interview so that we

could ask them the following questions if we were not satisfied with their answer and

because we provide a balance between the open-ended questions' flexibility and the

closed-ended questions' structure, semi-structured interviews are frequently utilized in

research. This enables my co-researchers and I to gather comprehensive and qualitative

data,
25

guaranteeing that important subjects are addressed in every interview.

Six participants were selected by the researchers to have individual interviews.

The researchers and participants first communicated by messenger to decide on a day and

time that would work for both of them to participate in an interview. Both in-person and

Google Meet formats were used during the interview. The researchers used the mentioned

sites to generate a meeting link that participants could join online. Once inside the

meeting, the participant and the researcher greet each other to build rapport before

moving on to the interview questions.

The researcher followed the guide questions that they had prepared ahead of time

throughout the interview to ensure that the interview flowed well. Furthermore, their

behavior will be monitored throughout the session. Following the interview, the

researchers transcribed what was stated as well as observations on their behavior during

the interview, collecting data that would be evaluated and thus developing themes for the

thematic maps.

Ethical Considerations

1. Informed Consent: Participants will be provided with clear and concise

information about the study's purpose, procedures, and potential risks and

benefits. Written informed consent will be obtained from all participants.

26

2. Confidentiality: Participants' identities will be protected by assigning them

pseudonyms and storing data securely. All identifying information will be

removed from transcripts and final reports.

3. Voluntary Participation: Participation will be voluntary, and participants

will have the right to withdraw from the study at any time without penalty.

4. Respectful Communication: Interviews will be conducted in a culturally

sensitive and respectful manner, valuing participants experiences and

perspectives.

Data Analysis

Data analysis will be guided by thematic analysis, a flexible and iterative

approach that allows for the identification, interpretation, and organization of themes

within the data. Themes will be analyzed in terms of their frequency, intensity, and

relationships to one another. Additionally, the researchers familiarized themselves with

the interview data, found themes and codes in the data they gathered, and examined each

code for significant patterns, and then used thematic analysis to develop a theme. After

that, the themes will be interpreted to provide a shared framework of working students

facing difficulties in pursuing college education.

Chapter 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATIONS OF DATA

This research study was conducted to explore the difficulties faced by working

students in pursuing college education. This included different factors which are relevant

to the said study. The researchers also provided them with consent letters as a form of

participation and we identified the different codes and themes that our participants said

during our Face to Face and Online Interviews with them. Based on our research

questions, we made different thematic maps which will be discussed in each form in the

latter part of this study.

Thematic Map # 1: Negative Experiences in all aspects

28

All working students face different difficulties in their field of life and it may lead

them to a point of being emotionally unstable, tired, and stressed. The experience that

produces them can be highly subjective. Some working students may have experienced

these struggles of having a dual role, because working students put up their best to keep

up to their responsibilities. This thematic map relays the information that shows the

experiences of being a working student and the struggles that they face along their way.

We interviewed some individuals that shared their experiences in the terms of having dual

roles and their struggles behind it that leads to negative effects in their life.

These struggles may result in difficulties with their academic performance and

may cause negligence in their studies. According to a participant, “Dun muna sa

So, we can

say that it had a huge effect on their academic performance due to lack of time to do

school activities which is understandable because they have work to attend to. But, it still

is a huge factor because they slowly lose time in academics. It may affect their grades and

it will be more difficult to catch up.

29

According to the data gathered, finance is another difficulty faced by working

students. Because of the daily expenses that they have to cover, may it be at home or

school expenses, and high price of commodities, they have to work harder to double up

the money they earn. Most of the participants shared that the money they earn still lacks

and not enough. According to one of the participants, “ Financially, hindi ako satisfied.

nahihirapan kami. Ayoko nakikita yung… Magulang ko na naghahanap kung saan kami

kukuha ng pagkain. Sobrang kulang talaga pagdating sa financial. Kaya ginagawa ko

yung lahat para umangat kami.” This will affect their responsibilities as a student and

their mental well-being because due to the stress of being financially unstable they slowly

lose their focus on their studies to work harder earning money.

This will cause them a lot of stress that will lead to neglect of their overall

well-being. This early introduction to the workforce can impact their educational

experience, and personal development, including the physiological aspects of their health.

According to the participant, “Wala na kong time sa sarili ko na kumbaga, dumadating

The participant stated that balancing work and studies is time-consuming,
30

leaving them no time for self-care such as exercise, proper nutrition, and sufficient sleep.

The demands of both work and academic responsibilities cause them stress and make it

difficult to prioritize personal well-being.

Moreover, the physiology strain often leads to unstable emotional health. Because

of the continuous work and academic responsibilities, added with financial stress, it

results in a range of emotions such as, stress, overthinking, and uncertainty. According to

So we can say that they felt

uncertainty and overthinking because of how hard life is. They started to wonder whether

to continue working or focus on studying, rather than doing both, but thinking about their

future, if ever they had to stop one of the roles interferes with their decision making.

It made them overthink and worry about their future so they don’t have a choice,

but to continue both roles. However, this sometimes leads to poor mental health because

of too much stress, and a huge workload of responsibilities will make them tired and

drained from too much exhaustion. According to the participant, “Sobrang nakakapagod
31

Or, alam mo yung ano lets say napuyat ka

tas kinabukasan buong araw tulog ka, kahit makumpleto mo yung tulog mo na yon,

kinabukasan parang wala ka parin energy. Ganon parang drain na drain ka.” The

participant shared an experience that they used to be drained because of the lack of sleep

and stress. It’s like rare for them to have some sleep causing them to be tired most of the

time because of the unending workload that doesn’t seem to stop.

While the emotional toll on working students is undeniable, it's crucial to

acknowledge that their dual roles also make their lives significantly time-consuming. The

constant demand to meet the responsibilities of both roles find themselves caught in a

cycle of time constraints. As we delve more into the difficulties faced by working

students, the impact of time constraints on their daily lives becomes a central concern that

needs attention and understanding. According to the one of the participants, “So, totoo

lang, wala na talaga. As in, may mga senior high school friends ko or junior high school

Since, um, since sila yung batchmate ko ngayon, yes, nagkakaroon ako ng time sa kanila

lalo pag may pasok.Pero, sa mga family ko or di kaya sa mga friends ko talaga na before,

hindi na talaga kami nakakapag-set ng time. Hindi lang naman ako, pati rin sila. Kasi,

So it is stated that they no longer
32

have time to socialize or meet up with their family and friends. Working students rarely

have time to be social instead they focus on the responsibilities that they have to

accomplish.

Thematic Map # 2: Positive Experiences

If there are negative effects, there are also positive effects but we can't deny the

fact that there are only a few of them. In terms of the effect of difficulties in academic

performance, some other participants said that it did not affect them. According to a

participant, “Sa academic performance, wala namang siyang na-apektohan since

They said that they sacrifice
33

their sleep just to do their responsibilities as a student and accomplish tasks in school.

They do not neglect their studies, because most of them are scholars, they don’t want to

lose their scholarship. They are very attentive and hardworking to do the responsibilities

of their dual roles.

Though, some other participants said that they are not satisfied with their financial

status, there are some participants who said that their financial status was just right.

According to them “ Ah, okay.

So, noong grade 10 kasi talaga, ito

wala akong, ngayon kasi, wala akong masyadong extra.

They said that the money they

earn was just right, meaning they earn just enough money to survive and pay for their

expenses.
34

Even though other participants say that their physiological aspects have been

affected, other participants said, “Hmm, sa physical appearance, uhh wala naman.” The

participant stated that there were no changes on their body that caused them stress, which

concludes that they have no problem according to their physical well being.

That goes the same for emotional well being. Other participants said that they

have been massively affected but for some participants they said that being a working

student had a positive effect on them. According to a participant, “50-50. Kasi, ano, alam

It had a positive impact on them because they earn money, even

though it is not a huge amount they are still happy that they earn money through their

hard work. This occurrence is called eustress, where they feel that the stress they

experience is beneficial to them and unharmful.

35

Thematic Map # 3: Experience Challenges

There are challenges that human beings may face in their everyday life. This

includes balancing their schedules, doing homeworks, doing their very best at work while

dealing with financial problems which can be stressful to some individuals. Most people

expressed that they have trouble managing their time, which lowers their productivity and

increases their stress levels. We interviewed some individuals who encountered many

obstacles while working and studying. This thematic map relays the challenges faced by

working while studying students. In a part of our interview, four out of six participants

stated that time management can be a challenge due to the reason that their school and

work time overlaps. According to a participant, “Difficulties? Time management. Parang

36

responsibility sa bahay. Meron din sa trabaho. Parang nahihirapan akong i-manage

yung oras ko.”

They are struggling to manage their time due to their responsibilities in their

house and in school. In this situation, some of our participants experienced lack of time,

and having no time to bond with their family and friends to the point that they do not

know what to prioritize first, because of having a dual role.

There are also other responses that may contribute to this research. We will now

tackle the other difficulties stated by the participants that we interviewed. According to

the data gathered, some of the individuals experienced having a lack of sleep and

oversleeping. “Yung difficulty siyempre unang-una din yung walang tulog since bilang

call center sa gabi yun since nakabase kami sa US and then yung night satin, morning sa

kanila. So ayun, nag-work. Nag-work ako ng gabi and then pumapasok naman ako ng

morning. So yun nga, wala talagang tulog or walang pahinga for the whole week. And

since Saturday and Sunday naman, day off ko naman or rest day ko naman sa work. And

then yung Saturday may class pa rin ako so technically nakakapag-rest lang talaga ako

ng Sunday.” There is no debating that sleeping is necessary for our mental, physical, and

overall health. Sleep deprivation on a regular basis can cause various effects that may

affect your work and studies. According to the participant, they stated that it is hard for

them to make time to sleep due to their schedules. One may experience mood changes,
37

reduced concentration, fatigue, and irritability. "Yung pagising sa umaga. Yung ano,

pag-oversleep. Pagod lagi sa trabaho" While in oversleeping, one may also experience

having trouble controlling your mood changes in which it can affect your work and

academic performance. Encountering fatigue in work can be obtained due to the reason

that they overslept.

These difficulties can be a disaster as it interferes with your daily life. Thus, we

can say that students that are working while studying face unique challenges that can

interfere with their academic performance and personal life. These components come up

with the fact that being a working student means hard work, stress, and time

management. It is not easy to become a working student but it definitely pays off in the

end.
38

Thematic Map # 4: Coping Strategies

When we encounter difficulties in life, there will always be a time that you think

what will you do to overcome it and be the self you always are. There are many things

you can do and one of the most used is the coping mechanisms. This thematic map relays

the information about the coping mechanisms working students do to overcome the

difficulties they experience. We interviewed some individuals that had a dual role of

studying while working and explored what coping mechanism they do. According to a

participant.

Another participant says “Like, pinatamad, pag pinatamad ako, hayayayan ko yung sarili

kong tamarin, gano'n.

May timer, nagta-timer kasi ako eh”.

39

So, we can say that most of the working students are doing it by self soothing. It

enables you to lessen stress, prevent burnout, and improve your physical and mental

health. When you return to studying, getting enough sleep will improve your motivation

and general productivity. Rest enhances performance overall and helps avoid injuries.

Additionally, it promotes a strong immune system, lessens inflammation, and helps with

muscle recovery. Rest also decreases blood pressure and aids in stress management, both

of which support heart health.

Also, as said by one of our participants, “Yun nga kagaya ng sabi ko is to take

care of my hygiene, and kagaya ng ginawa ko nag spend ako ng pera so I bought this that

I thought that I needed, that was my coping mechanism or parang naging therapy ko”.

Thus, we can say that this individual copes with their struggles by distraction which is

buying materials, things or expenses in their own money. Purchasing their own resources

helps working students deal with their problems since it provides them a sense of

independence and control over their circumstances. They might not be able to depend on

others to give them the resources they need because of their work obligations and

restricted time. They may make sure they have precisely what they need, when they need

it, by buying their own supplies. Purchasing their own materials also enables students to

customize their study tools and resources to best suit their schedule and preferred method

of learning.
40

One participant said that when we asked what the coping mechanisms were. Our

participants replied to this. Talagang

binaba, ah, inaano ko yung oras, yung time management.

In the context of Crisis Plan, having a Time management has several obvious advantages.

Effective time management enables you to do more tasks in less time, which results in

greater time freedom, improves concentration, increases productivity, reduces stress, and

increases time spent with the people that mean most in your life.

In the context of having an opposite action as a coping mechanism. It deals with

the situation where you are having an inspiration, giving yourself a word of affirmation.

We conclude that because one of the participants said “Na, ano ko siya, na ku-cope ko

Having inspiration is

good for the working student because it strengthens the spirit of a student. AIt is

important to have inspiration from parents and friends because it gives us strength so that

we can be even stronger and think to always be strong in everything and not give up on

the problems we face.

In accordance with what the participant said “Ano lang.

At the same time magiging positive

It may

be advantageous for one's physical and emotional health. Positive thinkers are better at

handling stress, have stronger immune systems, and are less likely to pass away young.

because thinking positive will help us become more productive and it will also help our

mental health.

Chapter 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary of Findings

This qualitative research study has found the difficulties faced by working students

in pursuing college education. The objectives of this research were primarily focused on

the effects, challenges that working students experienced and the coping mechanism they

do to overcome it. Furthermore, the results in this study were aligned with the Role Strain

Theory of Goode; that talks about the difficulty of meeting the responsibilities of a

particular role in life.

The findings of the study were arranged according to the statement of the problem stated

in Chapter 1:

1. What is the Effect of working while studying on working students in Quezon City?

- THEME # 1 (Negative Experiences in all aspects) and THEME # 2 (Positive

Experiences) determined the effects of the difficulties faced by the working

students. The study discovered that working while studying has a negative and

positive impact on the academic performance of students. Also, as these

individuals were impacted, the negative results is that they are being confused or

uncertain at times, experiencing physical exhaustion due to the dual demands of

work and studying that also causes emotional stress among the students. It is also
43

indicated that working students often experience mental fatigue and burnout. The

study also dentified that working students face challenges in maintaining social

relationships. The findings showed that working while studying provides financial

support to students but is still lacking. It also shows the positive resulst that they

experience no effect at all in terms of academic performance. They gain eustress

and satisfaction with the help of their salary, which also helps to improve their

financial status.

2. What are the Challenges faced by working students while studying?

- THEME # 3 (Experienced Challenges) were formulated by the participants which

discusses several challenges faced by working students, including time

management difficulties, exhaustion opposing schedules, increased tasks at hand

and limited personal time. These challenges make it uncertain for students to

balance their academic needs and the ability to work independently.

3. What are the Coping mechanisms of students struggling to study while working?

- THEME # 4 (Coping Strategies) discusses various coping mechanisms employed

by students to manage the difficulties of studying while working. These include

effective time management, seeking support from peers and family, engaging

academic opportunities for studying and prioritizing tasks, preserving a positive

mindset, and learning proper self care activities. Above all of these, all the coping
44

mechanisms were only yet to be known until they started working, with the reason

that most of them did it to get extra funds.

Conclusion

As a result, and with proven results, it was clear that working while studying in

Quezon City has both positive and negative impacts on students. These are some

examples of positive impacts experienced by working students: satisfaction in their

financial status, eustress, ineffectuality. However, while providing financial support, it

adversely affects academic performance, physical and emotional well-being, social

relationships, and mental health. The challenges faced by working students include time

management difficulties and exhaustion, making it challenging to balance academic and

work responsibilities. Nevertheless, the research identifies coping mechanisms such as

effective time management, seeking support, engaging in academic opportunities,

prioritizing tasks, maintaining a positive mindset, and practicing self-care. Overall, the

findings emphasize the complex interplay between work and study for students, with

implications for their holistic well-being and academic success.

Recommendations

The following recommendations are hereby proposed along with the contribution of

this qualitative research study:

45

1. To the working students. The most important.

● Stay Tenacious- In our life, we often encounter challenges and setbacks

that test our determination. One essential quality that can make all the

difference is tenacity. Staying tenacious is crucial because it helps you

overcome obstacles and navigate through setbacks.

● Personal Rejuvenation- In the fast-paced and demanding landscape of

modern life, individuals often find themselves caught in perpetual cycles

of responsibilities, deadlines, and obligations. Amidst the chaos, the

concept of personal rejuvenation emerges as a beacon of hope—a

deliberate and essential practice that allows individuals to recharge their

physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It involves engaging activities

that bring joy, relaxation, and a sense of fulfillment, ultimately

contributing to a renewed sense of energy and vitality in one's life.

● Stay Vigilant for potential encounters- The life of a working student is a

delicate balancing act, where the demands of academics and employment

converge. In this dynamic environment, staying vigilant becomes not only

a choice but a necessity. Staying vigilant acts like a guiding compass for

working students, helping them navigate through the complexities of time

constraints, safety issues, academic tasks, money matters, networking

efforts, self-care routines, professional growth, and the careful juggling of

responsibilities.
46

2. To students. If your classmates are working students, support them. If you intend

to be a working student, think about it. If the people who support your studies are

still able to do so, just study first; however, if they are no longer able to do so and

you truly want to, you should be able to handle it and be prepared to face any

challenges that arise.

3. To the professors. Encourage your students to go after and accomplish their

dreams. For them to overcome whatever obstacle they face and never give up.

4. To the parents. Still, guide your son or daughter by giving them special attention

and making them feel important. This fosters their capabilities and talents.

5. To the future researchers. Increase the number of participants to achieve more

important topics and more accurate results and strive for more. Goodluck

R – Researcher, P – Participant

R: Ready ka na po?
P: Okay na po.
R: Ahh, sige po. So, eto po yung question. How old are you po?
P: So, 13 years old.
So, simula 13 years
old ako.
R: Okay, so what grade are you in now?
P: Grade 11
R: What kind of business do you have?
P: Yung business ko kasi ano siya, hand-made products. Kung baga, yung pinoproduce
kong product is 100% hand-made talaga siya. 100% hand-made ko.
R: Ah sige po. Can you tell us what is the reason you started working?
So, yun yung reason ko.
R: Yeah, tama. So, what are the difficulties you have experienced while working and
studying at the same time?
P: Nung malapit na yung exams namin, tsaka, yung puro deadlines na talaga. Yung puro,

So, may time na, per ano kasi doon, sa mga product
ko, kada product ko, one to two hours yung iba gawin.
i-balance. Ang hirap niyang kahit anong time management gawin mo. Minsan, ang hirap
talaga.
R: In those struggles you have experienced, how did it affect you in terms of your
academic performance?
R: So, how does having a dual role being a student and an employee affect your physical
well-being?
P: Pwede paki-ulit ng tanong?.
R: Ah, sige ba. How does having a dual role being a student and an employee affect your
physical well-being?
wala namang ano, wala namang akong tutor dito. So, ang hirap niya.
R: Ito po yung next. So, how do you feel when you are working while studying? What
effects did it have on your emotional well-being?
So, ano, so happy ako dun sa stress na

Kaya,
So,
napabalance ko naman siya. So, balance. So, ngayon, ako lang.
R: Um, so, ito naman. How does having a dual role affect your social life? So, sa
nabibigyan ng time talaga.
R: So, eto, how did it affect your financial status?
P: Ah, okay.
Kasi, kumbaga, may kakayahan
akong, ano, mag-earning, gano'n. So, ayos naman. Sakto lang.
R: Oh, so, ito naman. In your answer from the previous question, how did you cope with
the struggle you experienced?
P: Anong ibig sabihin?
P: Okay, okay, okay. Yung stress,na, ano, na naranasan ko,
R: Struggles po.
55

yung,
R: paano yung way mo, oo, gano'n, paano mo yung way mo, para ma, ano,
malampasin, gano'n.
Um,
yung, ano kasi, kumbaga, minsan, kapag, ano, kapag, talagang pagod mo, tsaka sobrang,
Like, pinatamad, pag
May timer, nagta-timer
kasi ako eh. Like, boy, di ba ako 10 minutes, gano'n, o magpapahinga ako, one hour.
Pag,
dapat, pag natapos yung four hours business, agad, gano'n.
As in hindi siya
R: Okay. So, eto naman po. Have you had any experience of difficulties in maintaining
your academic performance because of your work commitments? If so, how do you cope
with these challenges and guarantee that your studies are settled?
yung, halimbawa, may minus akong 20 sa out of 100, may minus akong 20 o kaya 10.
Kasi nga, late ako nagpasa. So, ngayon yung deadline, Friday, tapos, lunes ko siya
53

ipapasa.
yung, ano, yung business. Kasi, kumbaga doon, kasi saan ba ako kumuha, diba,
Pero, ang problema nga lang, ano to, grade 10 to, kasi no
grade 10, doon talaga ako, may ano eh, doon talaga ako, full time sa, ano, sa negosyo ko
eh. Iba-ibang negosyo kasi yung, ano, gano'n. Pinasa ko, gano'n. Tapos, tapos yun nga,
tapos, no, ito ang nabalak ko. Sige lang po. Okay, okay, okay. Ano, ang deadline na kasi,
parang, halimbawa, kinabaksan yung deadline niya. Saka lang ako, ano, magagawal
gumawa. Tapos, edi, ganyan deadline. Tapos yun, ipapasa ko naman siya. Minus. Huwag
Tapos,
ayun, napabayaan ko yung accounts. Tapos, biglang may, ano, may unexpected palang
R: So, eto naman po.How do you manage your overall well-being while juggling work
and studies?
P: Ano pong well-being? Yung, like, personality ko?
Sarili.
P: Um, paano ko siya naman manage? Paano? Okay.
R:While juggling work and studies.
nakapagpahinga. Pero ngayong, baka siya okay naman. Sa ibang tao, okay naman ako
54

Kasi, ano ko eh, um, extrovert ako. Like, hindi naman ako mahihain tao. Pagka, pagka
Like, yung, halimbawa, ano,
Kasi nga, mag-diba, mag-ano, mag-mag-Valentine's Day na,
worth the oras. So, okay naman, ayos naman.
R: So, ito po yung next. Um, do you still have time to take care of yourself despite the
struggles you've experienced? How so?
P: Wala na. Ay! Yung sagot ko. Wala na ba eh. Wala na. Hindi ko na may explain.
R:Um, lastly, what advice can you give to those students who are planning to be a
working student like you?
nung pinakauna ko talagang business, ano ako eh, uh, 20, last year lang ako nag-ano,
nag-o, nag-ano talaga ng business ko. Like, kasi nga, ano, katulong ko nga yung kapatid
Yun, 20 plus year siya last
year. Ano, grade 9. Grade 9. Tama ba? O, grade 9, grade 9 tayo that time. Kasi grade 11
ka pa lang, diba? O, grade 9 tayo that time. Uh, ang business ko kasi nun, dahil nga, in
demand. Yung in demand, yung dapat mong i-business ay yung in demand. Tama. In
demand siya eh. Pero, actually, magkiba kasi yung in demand sa trending. Kasi meron
kasing trending na hindi naman siya necessary. So, dapat yung in demand na ilalabas mo,
yung talagang masasabi mo na kahit, kahit bata, kahit matanda, kahit ilang taon, kahit,
kahit anong gender, kakailanganin.
R: So, malulugi ka.
P: Oo.
R: Kaya ang gagawin mo dapat yung, long lasting. Need siya.
55

P: Oo.
face mask. At that time, ano, that time, 5 pesos yung benta nun sa isang pera. So, 7 pesos,
7 pesos, 10 pieces na siya. So, wait lang. Tama diba? Wait lang, magka-copy,
magka-copy na ako. ito. Yun, 70 pesos yung, ay, 70 pesos. 70, oo, tama. 70 pesos lang
yung puhunan mo sa 10 packs nun. Diba? Tapos, yung, nakita mo dun, since, ano, 5
Diba? 430
pesos agad yung profit. Ang pinuunan ko lang dun, to be exact, isa ka, 197 pesos lang
Like, halimbawa, ngayon, mag-iipon ka, 5 pesos a day. Tapos, mag-iipon ka sa isang 1, 5,
5 pesos a day, and then, 150 ba? O, 150? So, 150.
Like, yung mga, pang
Like, ikaw
mismo, kaya mo siyang puhunanan.
Kasi, dito, iyan, may tinahan kasi
kami.
Kaya, kagaya naman ngayon, since
Halimbawa, afford ba to nang marami? Tapos, tapos kasi dapat, ano, eh, okay yung
56

quality ng products mo para babalik-balikan kayo. Kaya, halimbawa, hindi mabenta sa

iba, pero may babalik-balik sa'yo yung, ano, customer kasi nga, high quality yung
product mo. So, um, okay lang yun.
Yes.
Kaya dapat pagka, ano, pagka nag-umpisa talaga sila dyan, dapat kapag may gawain sila,
gawin na nila as in pagkabigay ngayong araw, dapat sisimulan na nila ngayong araw.
Kahit umpisaan lang nila maging proseso lang. Kasi kapag pareho nilang, ano, pareho
sila. So, ang hihirap niya i-manage. Mas mahihirapan sila. Tsaka, huwag nilang, ano,
gawin nila, halimbawa, 100 percent, I mean, 100 percent, I mean, yung ano, yung
nilang gagamitin, like, halimbawa, magsha-shopping sila, mag online shopping. Ang try
out nila, ang i-focus nila, paano nila magagamit yung do-doble pa.
pang sobra. Wala, masisiro ka. Babalik ka talaga sa umpisa.
R: So, ito po yung last. Also, to those who are still fighting to survive as a working
student?
P: advice din siya sa mga ano? Working student.
R: Fighting to survive as a working student.
P: Ibigang sila ng advice?
R: Mm-hmm. Kas kumbaga karugtong lang siya na...
P: Okay, okay.
talaga yung ano, kung ano ba talaga yung dapat mong i-priority, like accounts ba, o yung
R: Paano pag nawala yung business mo?
P: Ayong business, pwede siyang mawala. Ayong accounts, pwede kang mag-work.
Pwede kang mag-work, pwede mo siyang magamit sa future. So magdadoubt ka talaga.
Ano pa talaga yung doubt mo mas i-prior?
So pangit talaga yung output ng
ganun eh. Kaya ipagpahinga niya muna yung salili niya. Halimbawa, 1 or 2 hours. Kahit
57

kailangan. Halimbawa, mas kailangan mo pa talagangi-priority yung business na to. Kaya

kapag... Tsaka yung pros and cons, kapag inuna mo yung business, o kaya kapag inuna
mo yung accounts. Halimbawa sa accounts, ano, pa-deadline na siya. Tapos kinala mo
So wala kang choice
Kaya kumbaga at least may ano pa
Tapos may ano din ako, may deadline din
ako kinabukasan na performance. Tapos ganun.
Pero kapag ads mo kasi, since yun nga,
sila pinriority.
nila yung problema nila ngayon.
gagawin silang makaka-apekto doon.

Magka-take ka
Ano man lang ba
Diba?
So, sinabi ko hindi ako mapag-review. So, medyo nais-stress yung teacher ko nun. Pero at
least, diba? Anding totoo. Tsaka
kami, hindi ko na siya ano. Eh, ba, sir papasa ba ito mamaya? Hindi ko kasi siya nagawa.
So, nasasabihin ko na lang agad. Nasasabihin ko na lang siya agad. Hindi ko na siya
nagawa. At least, diba? Tapos
yung teacher mo, ang higpit. Diba? Like, kilala niyo yung style ng student Yan ang
gagawin niya pala.Eh, pagka uwi mo daw, picturean mo yung gawa mo. Diba? So,
umamin ka na agad Umamin ka na. Umamin ka na. Tapos yung, oo.
Tapos makikita nung, tapos yung pala, may kakilala pala yung customer mo. Nakaibigan
mo.
Like, nimbawa, how mag-ipon.
Actually, kahit alam mo mag-ipon, iba kasi pag mamomotivate kang mag-ipon. Iba pa rin
yun.
59

sarili ko. Tapos, yun nga, nimbawa, alam mo mag-ipon eh. Kaya mong mag-ipon. Pero
hindi mo siya magagawa. Kasi nga, walang nag, walang motivation. Wala kang rason.
Tapos, napapanood mo. Yung unti lang yun. Hindi mo siya iipunin, diba? Kaya sa ipon,
ano daw gagawin pagka-ipon?
parang wala. Tama ba?
P: Oo, oo, oo. Para sa'yo, mamomotivate ka din. Gano'n.
Kasi, ano,
magagaw mong order ngayon.
So, pwede ko siyang ilabas, gano'n. Yung mga pagka-napractice ko pa. So, bigyan mo
So, thank you po ate.
P: Sige, sige. Ang tagal pala pangusap natin.
R: Hindi po, okay lang. Say thank you po sa time ate. Nice to meet you po.
P: Sige, thank you din. Thank you po. Nice to meet you.
R: Thank you. Gin oh. Gin.
P: Gin. Patayin mo na, Gin. Patayin mo na.

R – Researcher, P – Participant

R: How old are you?

P: 18
R: What grade did you start being a working student?
P: Grade 9.
R: What grade are you in now?
P: Grade 12.
R: What type of job did you apply for?
60

P: Business handler or management

R: Can you tell us what is the reason you started working?
P: Ever since, kasi may ugali akong ano, alam mo yung… kapag walang pumapasok na
pera sakin, di ako mapakali.
R: What are the difficulties you experienced while working and studying at the same
time?
P: First of all, time management.
ako sa basketball, tapos every day may training kami na three times a day so yung pag
R: How does having a dual role (being a student and an employee) affect your physical
well being?
P: Nakakapagod, nakaka-ano sya, nakakadrain sobra. Parang… syempre since ano
pahinga, humiga ka nalang, tapusin mo yung studies mo pagkata’s mo kumain s-studies
ka pa, tas saka mo imamanage yung business. So, ano sya very hassle kung tutuusin pero
kung gusto mo talaga yung ginagawa mo diba? Bat ka… bat mo susukuan?
R: Would you consider yourself happy as a working student?
Tapos yung satisfaction.
R: Is there a time when you feel like crying because of your situation? If yes can you
please tell me more about that experience?
parang iniisip mo what went wrong? Parang andon na kayo sa pinaka taas tapos and
then… biglaang baba as in ano nag crashing down so kung baga para kang natutuliro,
kasi from, from hundred biglang naging zero… so parang nahirapan ka mag adjust
61

So malaking ano pag babago sa sarili,
na maari mong harapin in the future yung mga pwede mong gawing stepping stone, yung
mga problem ana nararanasan mo.
R: How do you feel when you are working while studying? What effects did it have on
your emotional well being?
P: Pansin ko nung nag bubusiness ako nung that time parang ano, naging manhid ako
Yung
importante. Kasi nga sa sobrang busy mog anon.
R: Do you think you are satisfied with your life? Is there a time when you overthink
about your situation as a working student? If yes, can you please tell me more about that?
P: Oo kinakabahan ako sa future ko, like now nag tatake ako ng stem. At the same time
What if ito nalang
yung kinuha ko? Or what if natapos ko na to or pag kinuha ko yung strand ko na to, hindi
ko na sya gusto by that time.” Kasi yung interest ko or yung or sa isip ko sa ganitong
business naman yung malaking pera. Eh, knowing me ano ako goal getter ako, so at the
same time.
R: How does working while studying affect your mental well being?
nalang humiga gusto mo nalang mag pahinga, or kahit sobra sobra pahinga mo, feeling
mo pagod ka parin kahit kumpleto tulog mo feeling mo pagod ka parin. Or, alam mo
R: Do you still have time to meet and bond with your family and friends? If no Is it hard
to make time for them?
P: Very, very hard kasi napansin ko rin yun.
is nag bago ako dahil nakahawak ako ng pera. Di nila alam, na kung bakit ako
nagkaganun kasi nga di ako satisfied kung ano meron ako. So gusto ko, grow lang nang
62

grow nang grow. To the point na di ko na naalagaan ang mga relationship ko outside that
life.
R: If the answer was yes, then, how do you manage to have time to meet with them?
yayari. Nung time na umuwi ako from school, parang ano, tapos na yung training naming
ginawa ko, yung buong month or yung off ko from basketball, di ako nag training.
labas every Saturday or may bagong movie manonood kami ganon tapos mag
R: How does having a dual role affect your social life?
P: Di na rin ako masyado nakakapag, party or mingle with other people ganon. Parang
sinarado ko na yung buhay ko to myself na pinriority ko na I need to grow I need to think
outside of the box.
sarili ko, kasi I’m growing individually.
R: Are you satisfied with your financial status now? Is it enough to have your expenses in
studies fulfilled?
P: Right now hindi, kasi yun nga nag bago yung ano ko, yung interests ko. Yung interest
ko na yung which is automotive. Parang ano sya, sa world ng automotive napaka ano,
napaka ano nya, napakalawak so sa larangan na yon. Marami ng nauna, marami ng
sumikat, marami ng mas Malaki. So napakalaki kasi ng larangan ng automotive, so
parang ano sya, as youngster na may pangarap na ganto. Parang ang mang yayari is
nil ana yet to be learned.
R: What about the expenses with your family? And you, is it enough for you to fulfil
yourself (needs, wants?)

P: Not really kasi nga kagaya ng sinabi ko, ano kakasimula ko pa lang sa larangan na to
so yung expect yung kikitain mo is hindi kasing laki, okay na yung kahit kaunti-unti lang,
barya barya lang kinikita mo pero at the same time.
piyesa or what.
63

R: How did it affect your financial status?

P: Roller coaster ride, yung financial status ko, kaya kagaya ng sabi ko, from hundred to
zero, from zero to building it back up to a hundred. Parang ano, nakapanibago, kailangan
mo mag adjust kailangan mo mag ano. I-adjust yung lifestyle, i-adjust yung, yun nga
yung pag pag bubuhay, di mo na kailangan ulit, uy pag may nakita kang Maganda “bilhin
ko to” hindi, di na ganon. Kailangan mom aging praktikal sa panahon ngayon.

R: In terms of coping mechanisms, In your answers from the previous questions, how did
you cope with the struggles you experienced?

P: One of my biggest mistakes di ako nag ipon, yung nagging coping mechanism ko is
ko so, a very bad decision.

R: Have you had any experience of difficulties in maintaining your academic

performance because of your work commitments? If so, how do you cope with these
challenges and guarantee that your studies are settled?

P: Like I said nagging scholar ako ng basketball so there’s no failing, kasi pag nag fail
ako, mawawala yung scholar sakin. Mawawala yung opportunity to play, ginawa ko is…
katulad ng sabi ng coach ko samin. “Student first before athlete.” So bago ako mah- lagi
mine-makesure na before I do all of those kinds of business stuff is tapos ko na yung
handler.

R: How do you manage your overall well being while juggling work and studies?

P: Inaalagaan ko yung well being ko that time is, lagi kong sinasabi kahit ang dami kong
ginagawa and dami ko priorities is to “take care of myself.” Eat right, sleep right mostly
hygiene. Kailangan ko alagaan lagi sarili ko take a bath, take a warm bath, take care of
yourself, skin care ganyan ganyan. Specially ano lagi ko gusto inaalagaan yung hair ko, it
gives me satisfaction.
for me that is already ano taking care of your well being, it gives me peace of mind, yun.

R: Do you still have time to take care of yourself despite these struggles you've
experienced? How so?
64

P: Yun nga kagaya ng sabi ko is to take care of my hygiene, and kagaya ng ginawa ko
nag spend ako ng pera so I bought this that I thought that I needed, that was my coping
mechanism or parang naging therapy ko.

R: Lastly, what advice can you give to those students who are planning to be a working
student like you? Also, to those who are still fighting to survive as a working student?

P: Always think long term, wag nyo uunahin yung pandalian na kasiyahan. Always think
long term, if ever you have partner i-brief mo sya on what are your goals, kailangan on
the same page kayo specially panahon ngayon ang hirap kumite ng pera. Make sure mo
na yung partner mo is, pareho kayo.
problema on your own, so ateast get a partner that could help you support your mental
health or daily struggles with your life, so dapat lagi ka mag isip ng future mo or long
term mo, mag isip ka pero don’t worry too much kasi, ito ah? Based on experience.
Masyado akong nag woworry ng future ko to the point na yung head space ko wala na
dun sa parang being workaholic or yung mga priorities na dapat unahin ko, para
na-distract yung momentum ko. Parang nagging anoa ko, nastuck up ako tulala lang ako
ganon kaya think about the future all the time, pero wag sobra, wag rin masyado pabaya
dapat iisipin mo ginagawa ko to have a better life in the future, hindi ginagawa mo to, to
have a better life right now, tas pag dating sa future wala na, yun lang.

R: Thank you for your advice and we appreciate your participation. Thank you so much
for this interview. This will really help us to conclude our research study.

conducted at 10:30 AM on January 2,2024 (Tuesday) in the morning.
R – Researcher, P – Participant

R: Start na po. This is ano po, para sa research na number one. General, how old are you?
P: Twenty-two.
R: In what grade did you start being a working student?
65

P: Ano, Bali.
student eh. Kumbaga nag i-stop ako ng pag aaral. At after ko graduate ng grade twelve,
nag-start na agad ako mag-trabaho. Tapos, two years ako na-stop ng school. Tapos,
bumalik agad ako sa school. Ganun siya. I-stop, tapos bumabalik sa school. Tapos, yun,
magiging working student. Parang two years ko palang naranasan mag-working student.
R: What grade are you in now?
R: What grade are you in now?
P: First year college.
R: What type of job did you apply for?
P: Service crew.
R: Can you tell us what is the reason you started working?
P: Financially.
R: What are the difficulties you experienced while working and studying at the same
time?
P: Difficulties? Time management. Parang nahihirapan ako kasi syempre may
responsibility din ako sa school. Meron din akong responsibility sa bahay. Meron din sa
trabaho. Parang nahihirapan akong i-manage yung oras ko.
R: To be specific, number one, effects, positive and negative. In those struggles you have
experienced, how did it affect you in terms of your academic performance? Would you
consider yourself having a dual role, which is a student and an employee? Are there any
changes you noticed in your physical appearance?
P: Ah.
bilang estudyante tsaka nagtatrabaho.
R: Sa ano po? Are there any changes you noticed in your physical appearance?
Kailangan
ko magpagsabayin.
66

R: Number one, how does having a dual role, being a student and an employee, affect
your physical well-being? Would you consider yourself happy as a working student? Is
there a time when you feel like crying because of your situation? If yes, can you please
tell me more about that experience. If no, none.
P: Ah ano, ano siya. Minsan, yes, minsan no. Ganoon, siguro sometimes na.
ako. Kaya hati.
R: Number two, how do you feel when you are working while studying? What effects did
it have on your emotional living? Do you think you are satisfied with your life? Is there a
time when you overthink about your situation as a working student? If yes, can you
please tell me more about that? If no, none.
Ganun. Kasi wala naman akong choice.
R: Number three, how does working while studying affect your mental well-being? Do
you still have time to meet and bond with your family and friends? If no, is it hard to
make time for them? Why? If yes, then how do you manage to have them to meet with
them?
Gano'n.
R: Four, how does having a dual role affect your social life? Are you satisfied with your
financial status now? Is it enough? Do you have your expenses in studying fulfilled?
What about the expenses with your family? And you, is it enough for you to fulfill your
self-needs, wants?

R: Okay. C. How did it affect your financial status?
P: Paano?
R: Affect
P: Affect sa financial status? Wala eh, sobrang kulang talaga yung financial status namin.
R: Okay. Three, coping mechanisms. In your answer from the previous question, how did
you cope with struggles you experienced?
P: Ano..
choice.
R: Have you had any experience of difficulties in maintaining your academic
performance because of your work commitments? If so, how did you cope with these
challenges? And guarantee that your studies are settled?
R: How do you manage your overall well-being while juggling work and studies?
P: Time management lang talaga yung kailangan. Para ma ma-manage.
R: Do you have time to take care of yourself despite the struggles you've experienced?
How so?
R: Okay. Lastly, what advice can you give to those students who are planning to be a
working student like you? Also, to those who are still fighting to survive as a working
student?
R: Okay. Thank you for your advice and we appreciate your participation. Thank you so
much for this interview.

R: Good afternoon po.

P: Good afternoon.
R:Yes, thank you for your time po. So, how old are you na po?
P: I’m 20 years old.
R: Okay, so in what grade did you start being a working student?
P: Since junior high.
R: What grade are you in now?
P: I'm in my second year of college.
R:Okay. What type of job did you apply for?
Ganun.
R: Okay. Can you tell us what is the reason you started working?
R: So, okay. What are the difficulties you experience while working and studying at the
same time?
P:Yung mga difficulties, unang-una is yung pag uh manage mo ng time mo kasi ano eh,
ang kalaban mo dun yung oras talaga.
R: In those struggles you have experienced, how did that affect you in terms of your
academic performance?
69

P: Ano uh, katulad ng sinabi ko, second year college, malaki talagang epekto nun kasi
may mga activities na hindi ako nakakapagpasa on time. Maraming pendings. Yun,
mahirap siya yung i-maintain.
R: Would you consider yourself having a dual role which is a student and an employee?
P: I think so.
R: Are there any changes you noticed in your physical appearance?
R: How does having a dual role affect your physical well-being?
P: Sa physical well-being naman ano eh, wala namang problema eh.
pagsabayin yung pagtatrabaho tas yung pag-aaral.
R: Would you consider yourself happy as a working student?
P: Minsan *giggles*
R: Is there a time when you feel like crying because of your situation?
sarili mo.
R: Can you please tell me more about that experience?
P: Uhh for example, uh sa school, may siguro ano, may time na maraming pinapagawa sa
school tapos nagtatrabaho ako. Nag uh—minsan wala na akong tulog kasi before ako
pumasok, galing pa ako sa trabaho.
R: What effects did it have on your emotional well-being?
R: Do you think you are satisfied with your life?
P: Ano, I think so ano, masasabi kong nasa-satisfied naman ako sa life ko.Kasi ano, kahit
nakakapag-aaral. Kaya kahit papaano, ano, nagpapasalamat pa rin ako.
70

R: Is there a time when you overthink about your situation as a working student?
ipapasa on time.
R: How does working while studying affect your mental well-being?
So, sobrang hirap sa ano,
sa utak mo, sa katawan mo. Parang ano eh, halos lahat maa-apektohan eh.
R: Do you still have time to meet and bond with your family and friends?
P: Hmm wala na. Hindi na ako nag-aano.
R: Is it hard to make time for them? Why?
R: How does having a dual role affect your social life?
P: Pakiulit.
R: How does having a dual role affect your social life?
P: Sa social life, wala naman ako magiging, wala naman problema dun eh. Ang kaso
lang, yun nga. Minsan, nagtatampo na yung mga kaibigan ko. Sa family ko naman, nasa
isang bubong kami.
R: Are you satisfied with your financial status now?
P: Sa tingin ko, hindi pa rin. Kasi ano eh, mahal pag nasa medical, ano tayo eh, field. So
hindi pa rin masa-satisfied.
R: Is it enough to have your expenses in studies fulfilled?
P: Mmm-hmm.
R: What about you? Is it enough for you to fulfill yourself? Needs and wants?
P: Siguro, ano, kung ngayong may, ano, mahirap i-fulfill yung ano eh. Lalo na yung
wants. Siguro, lagi tayong nasa needs. Kung ano lang yung kailangan, mas i-priority
natin yun.
71

R: In your answers from the previous questions, how did you cope with the struggles you
experienced?
kaya ko to.
R: Have you had any experience of difficulties in maintaining your academic
performance because of your work commitments?
Baka
mapabayaan ko siya, kaya mahirap din.
R: How do you cope with these challenges and guarantee that your studies are settled?
oras, yung time management.
R: How do you manage your overall well-being while juggling work and studies?
P: Yun nga, yung sabi ko may me-time ako. Like, ah, yun nga, yung pinapahinga ko na
yung sarili ko. Minsan naman, nagsashopping. Minsan naman, kumakain sa ano.
Kumbaga, tinitreat ko yung sarili ko.
R: Lastly, what advice can you give to those students who are planning to be a working
student like you?
P: Advice? Ano ba? Kasi hindi ko rin ma-advise yung sarili ko *saying these while
Matambakan. Ganun. Yun lang.
R: Also, to those who are still fighting to survive as a working student.
P: So, hala siya *laughed*.
72

natin na mapagsabay talaga or matapos natin yung pag-aaral natin kahit na nagtatrabaho
tayo. Yun siguro fighting lang *laughed* yun lang.
R: Thank you so much for your advice and we appreciate your participation. Thank you
so much for this interview. This will really help us to conclude our research study.
P: Welcome.

R – Researcher, P – Participant

R: Hello po, good afternoon po ***

P: Hello.
R: Hello po.
P: Mag-open po ba ng camera?
R: Okay naman po na, hindi po.
P: ...or voice lang?
R: Voice lang po.
P: Ah, kahit voice lang.
R: So, good afternoon po and thank you for accepting our invitation to participate in this
study.
P: Okay.
R: I would like to ask you several questions po about being responsible. Audible po ba
ako?
P: Opo, medyo ano lang loud po.
R: Okay po.
73

R: First question po, how old are you po?

P: 21 years old.
R: Okay po.
R: In what grade po did you start being a working student?
P: Since, ano, first year college pero nag-work na talaga ako nung ano palang grade 12.
R: Yeah. What grade are you in now po?
P: Third year college.
R: What type of job po did you apply for?
P: Call center. Nag-work ako first ng Jollibee and then nag-call center ako nung first year
college na ko.
R: And then until now po?
P: Oo, until now.
R: And now po, can you tell us po what is the reason you started working?
na nahihirapan and then parang gusto kong tumulong sa kanila while pursuing my career
or while pursuing my college.
R: As a working student po, what are the difficulties you experience while working and
studying at the same time?
P: Yung difficulty siyempre unang-una din yung walang tulog since bilang call center sa
gabi yun since nakabase kami sa US and then yung night satin, morning sa kanila. So
ayun, nag-work. Nag-work ako ng gabi and then pumapasok naman ako ng morning. So
yun nga, wala talagang tulog or walang pahinga for the whole week. And since Saturday
and Sunday naman, day off ko naman or rest day ko naman sa work. And then yung
Paano po ito na-apektohan yung in terms of your academic
performance po?
P: Sa academic performance, wala namang siyang na-apektohan since sinasacrifice ko
ginagawa ko, school and work.
yung school and work, wala. Hindi sila na-apektohan dalawa.
74

R: In terms naman po sa physical well-being, are there any changes you notice in your
physical appearance?
P: Sa physical appearance ko, ayun, tumaba ako kasi nga, ano, so since payat talaga ako
dati.
bumigay. Like kumakain ako ng umaga pag out ko sa work, ng tanghala, ng hapo, ng gabi
bago mag-work. And then ng madaling araw pag lunch ko sa work. Lunch kasi yung
Kaya yun,
tumaba talaga ako which is naging maganda din naman yung effect.
R: Ahh, sige po. So, would you consider yourself as happy as a working student?
P: Oo naman. Sobrang saya ko na nag-work ako while nag-i-study kasi nakukuhaan,
utilities sa bahay like kuryente or wifi namin. So, masaya maging working student kahit
napagod.
R: Yes. Is there a time when you feel like crying because of your situation?
P: Oo. Lagi akong umiiyak kasi lalo kapag nasurvive ko yung week na to. Kasi binabase
ko yung pagod ko as a week.
Minsan, umiiyak talaga ako as in umiiyak ako sa work.
Do you think you are satisfied with your life?
P: Um, satisfied naman ako kahit nung wala pa akong work or kahit wala pa akong
Ayun,
mas pagiging satisfied ako. Pero, kahit hindi ko pa ina-achieve. Satisfied na talaga ako.
R: Um, is there a time when you overthink about your situation as a working student?
P: Parang, panong nagpa-overthink?
75

R: Like, ano, parang, pano, kung mapapatuloy mo pa ba ito yung pagwo-work or

rd
next year, which is 4 years, I have a lot of work to do baka hanggang 3 year na lang
nd
talaga ako, 2 sem, mag-working student since gusto ko na mag-focus sa next year,
th
which is yun na yung last year ko na pagiging student, which is 4 year college student.
And I think na kailangan ko ng pagtuunan ng pansin yung last year of being college ko.
rd
Kaya, ayun, siguro ang masasabi ko, magiging working student ako up until 3 year
nd
college, 2 sem.
R: Opo. Another po, how does working while studying affect your mental health or
mental well-being?
maipon lahat. And then, ina-handle ko yung stress ko ng pag-iyak or di kaya dinadaan ko
sa stress eating. Kaya, ayun, yung mental health ko naman ngayon is masasabi kong okay
pa. Lalo na, nakapag-school tour kami nung kahapon, which is 3 days and 2 nights din
ulit.
R: Okay po. In terms of social life, do you still have time to meet and bond with your
family and friends?
P: So, totoo lang, wala na talaga. As in, may mga senior high school friends ko or junior
Since, um, since sila yung batchmate ko ngayon, yes, nagkakaroon ako ng
time sa kanila lalo pag may pasok.
Since, yung mga,
Are you satisfied with your financial status now?
P: Um, oo naman. Since, um, kahit maraming expenses sa school. Since, ang course ko
is, um,
76

Um, uh, cruise ship management. Maraming expenses pero, yes, uh, still nakakapag-save
pa naman ako. And since, um, yung personality ko talaga, since dati is, um, kasama
talaga sa personality ko yung pagiging kuripot. Kaya, as long as na hindi naman
Na, yun nga, never forget to treat yourself sometimes. Kaya, ayun, yung financial ko
ngayon is satisfied naman ako since meron naman akong savings as of now.
R: Okay po. Um, in your answers from the previous question, how did you cope with the
difficulties or struggles you experienced?
P: Um, did I cope with the, um, struggles?
R: Yes.
gagaan ulit yung lahat. Para, kasing the way that you talk to God parang bibigyan ka niya
ng resolution sa problem mo. Hindi agad-agad, pero makikita mo yun, as the day passes
by. Tapos , ayun, um, yun nga, um, always, uh, always, uh, always look to the brighter
side.
Bakit ko ba sinimulan to? Ayun,
syempre, napakahirap maging working student. Lalong-lalo na kapag college ka na. O,
nasusolusyonan.
R: Through God po.
P: Oo, through God.
R: So, ano po, um, how do you manage your overall well-being po while working and
studying at the same time?
routine. As in, um, work, and then, at least, two to three hours sleep, and then school.
Minsan, kung hindi naman singit yung two to three hours, minsan dyan papasok yung
one, one hour sleep na lang. At least, before ako sumalang sa work, or before ako
Kasi, since nagdadrive din ako
papasok ng school, and napakalayo ng work ko sa school. Since yung work ko is sa
Commonwealth Quezon City, and then yung school ko is sa, ano pa, Mindyola, Manila,
katabi siya ng Malacanang. So, napakalayo talaga ng gap nung, um, nung work ko sa
school ko, and then nagdadrive pa ako. Kaya, ayun, gusto ko talagang magla, magla, um,
77

maglaan, anong, at least one hour of sleep before ako mag-school or before mag-work.
Kaya, yun, routine lang. Yun, ganun ko ina-handle yung overall, ano. So, may time pa din
po kayo mag-alaga, or to take care of yourself po, despite yung struggles na,
R: Lastly po, um, sa mga balak po maging working students, what advice can you give to
those students po?
kayo mag-part-time kapag bakasyon. Pero, at, um, as long as namin nagpapaaraw sa inyo
student is, tatagan nyo lang araw-araw and then, lagi nyo lang isipin kung bakit kayo
magsisimula dito.
Technically, ang nangyayari is naiiwanan
nila yung pag-aaral nila.
alalahanin yung goal nyo kung bakit kayo mag-work. Diba, mag-work kayo para
ma-continue yung college nyo, hindi para piliin yung work. Kaya, ayun. Um, always, lagi
nyo isipin yung kung bakit kayo nagsimula. Tsaka, alagaan nyo yung sarili nyo. Kasi,
Kaya, ayun.
Alagaan lang yung sarili at laging, um, laging tumingin dun lagi sa brighter side. And,
pinakamahalaga siyempre yung emotional support. Yung magagaling sa friends mo, sa
family mo na lagi nagsasabi, kaya mo yan, ayun. Ilan lang yung mga mapapayawo ko sa
mga balak mag-working student. Mahirap pero kakayanin kapag may goal ka.
R: Um, to those students naman po na who are still fighting to survive po as a working
student.
P: Ayun. Um, ang advice ko and masasabi ko sa inyo since isa ako dun. Ayun lang.
Laban lang para sa mga working student. Kapit lang kasi, onting panahon lang to since
pala and then, for the next month, January na. Sobrang bilis lang talaga ng panahon.
Laban lang and magkaroon lang ng pahinga. At mag-unwind lang minsan since
78

nakakapagod na at nakaka, um, nakaka-dream talaga yung pagiging working student.

Since hindi mo alam minsan kung anong unahin mo yung work ba, yung pahinga mo ba,
o yung school mo ba. Kaya, minsan, um, magpahinga ka. Eto, pinaka-advise ko talaga sa
marketing. So, working student, ilagay niyo yung time niyo kung saan kayo mas
mag-revenge. Like, imbes na mag-phone kayo, ilaan niyo na lang to sa pahinga. Ay, I
Since yung,
So, ayun, mag-take ng medicine,
mag-undwined, and then mag-pray. Mag, um, always look to the brighter side.
Pinaka-mahalaga yun. Have emotional support, do your friends packing. And then, ilaan
yung time sa pagpapahinga.
Ayun.
R: Thank you po dun sa advice. I hope this will get them to continue fighting for their life
as a working student. Thank you po, Ate Erica.Thank you po for this interview. And we
appreciate your participation po. This will really help us to conclude our research study.
Thank you so much po.
P: Thank you.
Nung grade 11
ako. Ako yung nag-i-interview sa mga ganito. Pero hindi naman siya working student.
Research din namin yun. And then, ayun, nabigyan din ako ng time.
Ilocos. Ano. Binigyan ko pa din ng time. Siyempre, as appreciation din na parang
payback time naman. So, ayun lang. Thank you.
R: Thank you so much po. Thank you po ulit.
P: Thank you. Ba-bye.
R: Ba-bye po. Thank you po.

R: *repeat question*
same time.
sa school at the same time, kailangan mo rin tustusan yung pambaon mo araw-araw
80

R: How do you feel when you are working while studying? What effects did it have on
your emotional well-being?

ako na ako na parang medyo Ano? Uncertain... Uncertain... Ay! Nalamutan ko yung
term!

mundo, ganun *laughed*
R: Have you had any experience of difficulties in maintaining your academic
performance?
P: Ano no?
R: *repeat question*
P: Oo, Mh-mh.
amputa *saying this while laughing* hindi ano hindi ano naging part ako nun tapos
Ayun.
R: How do you manage your overall well-being while juggling works and studies po
*repeat question*
P: Ay sorry lutang ako, ano no yun?
R: *repeat question*
P: Actually... Pano lang? Hmm... Parang ano lang
Teka basahin ko nga ulit *giggles* How do you manage? How do you manage your
overall well-being while juggling work and...
Do you still have time to take care of
yourself despite the struggles you've experienced? How so?
R: And lastly po what advice can you give those students who are planning to be a
working student like you po?

financial nyo
Ay finance nyo at the same time hindi na kayo namomroblema sa kung anong kailangan
nyo problemahin pagdating sa pera. Sobrang hirap pag may ano, yun lang.
R: Also, to those who are still fighting to survive as a working student?
nila.
R: Thank you po 5x
R: Thank you po kuya!
