18. The second and third transition elements have almost similar atomic radii. It is due to Lanthanoid contradiction.
It arises due to poor shielding effect of d and f electron.
19. a) It is the rate of decrease in the concentration of any one of the reactants or the rate of increase in the
concentration of any of the products in unit time.
b) For first order reaction.
ln[R] = −kt + ln[R]0 => ln[R]0 - ln[R] = kt
ln [R0/R] = kt => 2.303 log [R0/R] = kt
log [ Ro/R] = kt/2.303 => log[Ro/R]/t = k/2.303
Hence slope is k/2.303
20. The law states that for a solution of volatile liquids, the partial vapour pressure (p) of each component in the
solution is directly proportional to its mole fraction (x).
p1∝x1
p1=p01x1
Where,
p1 = partial vapour pressure of component one
p01 = pressure of pure component one
An ideal solution obeys Raoult's at all concentrations. The conditions that are obeyed are:
1. △mixH=0
2. △mixV=0

i. 45 g of ethylene glycol is mixed with 600 g of water.

Molar mass of ethylene glycol =62 g/mol
45 g ethylene glycol =45/62=0.726 moles.
600 g water =0.600 kg
Molality (m)=0.726mol/0.600kg=1.21m
The depression in the freezing point ΔTf=Kfm=1.86×1.21=2.25K

ii. The freezing point of pure water =273.15 K.

Freezing point of solution =273.15-2.25=270.90 K

21. i. The given compound does not contain α−hydrogen, so it does not undergo aldol condensation.

ii. Iodoform test – Methyl ketones give a positive iodoform test.

Acetophenone is a methyl ketone, whereas benzophenone is a phenyl ketone.
Therefore, acetophenone gives a positive iodoform test by giving a yellow precipitate of iodoform with an
alkaline solution of iodine. Whereas, benzophenone gives a negative test.

26. In a mercury cell, the mercury compound acts as a cathode, where a reduction reaction occurs, and the zinc
compound acts as an anode, where an oxidation reaction takes place.

29.
a. Manganese (Mn)
(OR)
a. The oxide in the lower oxidation state of a metal is basic and in the higher oxidation state of the metal it is
acidic
b. oxygen and fluorine are highly electro negative elements, small in size (and strongest oxidising agents)
c. In the give three oxoanions, the oxidation states of V, Cr and Mn are +5,+6 and +7 respectively. As the
oxidation state increases, the ease with which the oxoanions accept electrons increases. This increases the
oxidizing power.
30.
a. People taking lot of salt experience puffiness or swelling of the body due to water retention in tissue cells and
intercellular spaces because of osmosis.
b. Preservation of meat and fruits can be done by salting and adding sugar as a bacterial body can be considered
as a dilute solution and salted meat or sugared fruits as a concentrated solution.
c. When a pressure greater than the osmotic pressure is applied to the solution side, the solvent molecules will
migrate to the pure solvent. This phenomenon is called reverse osmosis.
(OR)
c. During intravenous injection the concentration of the solution should be same as that of blood so that they are
isotonic. Because if the solution concentration is hypertonic than blood cell will shrink and if it is hypotonic than
blood cell will swells / burst.

31. Answer:
a. Anomers are stereoisomers of cyclic sugars that differ in configuration only at the hemiacetal or
hemiketal carbon. Ex- α-D-Glucopyranose and β-D-glucopyranose are anomers
b. Maltose upon hydrolysis yields 2 glucose molecules.
c. An amphoteric substance is one which can act as an acid as well as a base. Amino acids show amphoteric
behavior. Amino acids are bi-functional molecules. They contain carboxylic (−COOH) group that acts as
an acid and an amino (−NH2) group that acts as a base.
d. A polypeptide is a continuous, unbranched chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds. To generate an
amide, the peptide bond connects the carboxyl group of one amino acid to the amine group of the next
amino acid.
e. Invert sugar, a mixture of glucose and fructose, is produced from sucrose by the action of yeast β-
fructofuranosidase.
