ARTIST STATEMENT
By synthesizing natural elements with ceramic animal and human anatomy, I remind the viewer that
humans are a part of nature, and therefore possess the innate characteristic found in nature to persevere
through hardships. I recalled my own experiences with mental and physical health as inspiration, then
created visual representations of growth through conditions that are not ideal. The types of plants and
natural elements are connected to the subject matter of each piece and are incorporated to visually link
humans to nature.
My working process is connected to the concept of perseverance, growth, and strength through
adversity. Most pieces were thrown on the potter’s wheel and then altered into more complex forms. These
wheel-thrown ceramics are stronger than slab-created ceramics due to the way clay is compressed on the
pottery wheel, which meant that this throwing process was necessary for supporting both the form and my
concept. For color, I used a variety of underglaze and mineral oxide washes to color the forms and unite
them visually.
Through this body of work, I have found that mistakes can yield forms that bring me pride with a little bit
of altering. I hope that my artwork inspires viewers to find a reason to remain resilient.
