Possessive Noun
To possess:
*To have as belonging to one; to own
Ex: I don’t possess a car.
My father owns a restaurant in Brooklyn
My father is the owner of a restaurant in Brooklyn
*(of a demon or spirit, especially an evil one) have complete
power over (someone) and be manifested through their
speech or actions
Ex: Jimmy is possessed by the Devil.
Possession (noun):
*The state of having, owning, or controlling something
Ex: He’s going to take possession of the house.
*Something that is owned or possessed
Ex: I have no money or possessions.
Possessor:
A person who owns something
Ex: My father is the possessor of considerable fortune.
Possessive:
*Demanding someone’s total attention and love
Ex: She’s a very possessive person.
‘s = is
a) Before an adjective
Ex: Jimmy’s tired.
Linda’s tall.
Kate’s intelligent.
b) Before a preposition
Ex: Jane’s in the living room.
Jim’s at home.
c) Before a verb (ing)
Ex: My father’s cooking dinner.
Mike’s teaching mathematics.
d) Before a noun followed by an article
Ex: My sister’s a nurse.
Jacky’s a mechanic.
Possessive Noun
A possessive noun is a noun that shows ownership of
something. Possessive nouns are commonly created with the
addition of an apostrophe and 's' at the end of a noun.
Ex: This is the cat's toy.
Carl’s car is in the garage.
These are men’s clothes.
The children’s books are on the table.
Mr. Charles’s computer is expensive.
Note: If the noun is in the plural (ending in ‘s’), we just add
apostrophe.
Ex: This is the teachers’ room.
The students’ bus leaves at 7:45.
