Let It Snow
While most folks dread the news of frozen precipitation in the form of translucent hexagonal ice crystals that fall
in soft white flakes, not me! Some of my best memories would never have happened without snow. In our
house a snow day was a holiday. We’d drive our kids to the church parking lot, tie their sleds to the bumper,
and take them for the ride of their lives. That arrangement worked out well for everyone involved: The girls got
to go sledding without having to climb a steep hill, and we got to ride in a heated vehicle.
Our neighbor added to the fun with his water skis. Dale literally flew across the church parking lot before the
momentum of my car and the speed bump on the parking lot caused him to go airborne. The landing was ra-
ther sudden, but the view was awe-inspiring. Had it been an Olympic event it would have scored at least a 9.8
– on the Richter scale.
Snow can be a blessing or a curse. The book of Job is mostly a dialogue between Job and his half-hearted
friends. But in Job 37, Job rehearses for his friends the power of God’s might, reminding them that He does
great things beyond our understanding. Then Job adds this thought: “He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’
so that all men he has made may know his work. He stops every man from his labor” (Job 37:6-7, NIV).
A clean church lot is a safe church lot. If you were one of the workers who spread salt, shoveled walks, or
cleared snow for the rest of us recently, thanks. The snow reminds us of God’s work; the clean lot reminds us
of your care.
