Hortatory exposition text is a type of text to persuade the readers that something should or should

not be the case. Hortatory Exposition text represents the author’s attempt to influence the reader to
do something or act in a particular way.

Generic Structure :

Thesis : The writer point of view about the topic discussed. It presents announcement of issue of
concern.

Arguments : series of argument which strengthen (memperkuat) the thesis stated before. It presents
the reason for concern, leading to recommendation.

Recommendation : The writer gives recommendation to the reader. It presents the statement of
what must or must not happen.

Language Feature:

1. Simple Present tense


2. There are several arguments that begin with, firstly, secondly, thirdly …
3. It contains recommendation that begins with:
- In my opinion, It’s better….
- I think … should ….
- I think …. Should be ….
- For these reasons ….. should …..

Why does it have to have facts and idea?

Because as the function of a Hortatory exposition is to persuade the reader so it has to have facts
and ideas to strengthen the explanation or the arguments. It means that the text asserts
(menegaskan) something to the readers by giving supporting statements and evidence to convince
it.
