book. After reading The Farm Concert once, the
children switch places and the other child reads while
his buddy acts out the book. A basket filled with zip-
lock bags containing other familiar books and
accompanying puppets for rereading and retelling is
close at hand. Each bag contains a copy of the book
and the pieces for retelling. To help with materials
management, a digital photo inside each bag shows all
the items that should go in the bag.
In a second-grade classroom, two students are
reading and acting out a play they’ve written them-
selves. When finished with that activity, they read a
reader’s theater script they are familiar with from shared
or guided reading. A folding board like those used in
science projects defines the drama work sta- tion area
and functions as a theater. Scripts are placed in clear
plastic sleeves on the back of the board. These students
are reading with ever-increas- ing fluency and
expression. They ask the teacher if they can perform
their new play during work sta- tion sharing time that
day.
