Learning Activity Sheet
SCIENCE 4
Quarter 3 Week 5

I. LEARNING SKILLS

A. Most Essential Learning Competency

Describe how light, sound and heat travel. S4FE-IIIf-g-4

B. Objective
At the end of this learning activity sheet, you should be able to:
✓ Describe how heat is transferred to different materials.

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Too much heat, light and sound are not good for us. People who are exposed
to loud noise for long periods may suffer loss of hearing. People who are exposed to
too much heat and light may suffer from the different skin ailments. Being aware of the
bad effects of heat, light and sound could enable us to come up with the ways to protect
ourselves from the dangers they may pose to our health.
The umbrella, hat and sunglasses are things we can use to protect us from the
excessive heat of the sun.
To protect ourselves from the light and heat of the sun, we can do simple things such
as:
1. We should avoid playing directly under the sun when it is high noon.
2. Let us not look directly to the sun.
3. Apply sunblock lotion when we go swimming.

III. ACTIVITIES

PRACTICE TASKS

PRACTICE TASK 1:
Directions: Read the following statements below. Write FACT if the statement is true
and BLUFF if the statement is false. Write it on the worksheet provided.

1. Insulators allow heat to flow easily.

2. Radiant energy travels as waves through space.
3. Cool air rises and expands. Warm air sinks.
4. Transfer of heat from one place to another by movement of fluids is called
convection.
5. Heat can also be transmitted across empty space or vacuum.

1
PRACTICE TASK 2:
Directions: Read the following questions carefully. Write the letter of the correct
answer on your worksheet.
1. What is conduction?
a. When heat is transferred through waves of heat across a distance.
b. When heat is transferred through circulation of liquid or gases.
c. When heat transfers from objects that are touching.

2. What is convection?
a. When heat is transferred through waves of heat across a distance.
b. When heat is transferred through circulation of liquid or gases.
c. When heat transfers from objects that are touching.

3. Which of the following is needed for convection to happen?

a. fluid/ gas
b. light in the form or rays
c. fire

4. This is a material that does NOT allow heat to pass.

a. insulator
b. conductor
c. conduction

5. Energy from the Sun reaches the Earth by __________.

a. radiation
b. convection
c. reflection

Activity 1: How Heat is Transferred through Air

Materials:
Margarine
Sunlight
Small plastic plate
Spoon

Procedure:
1. Scoop a portion of the margarine from its container using the spoon and place it
on a small plate.
2. Place the plate with margarine under the sunlight for 5 minutes. Record your
observations in your science notebook. And write your answers to the analysis
questions on the worksheet provided.

Analysis Questions 1:
1. What do you notice about the margarine after it was placed under the sunlight?
2. What do you think made the change on the margarine?
3. Predict what might happen to the margarine if it is continuously exposed to
sunlight for a long period of time?
4. Why is it necessary that margarine or butter should be kept refrigerated?

2
PRACTICE TASK 3:
Directions: Put a check (✓) if the sentence states a harmful effect to plants or animals
and cross (x) if it does not. Write your answer on the worksheet provided.

1. Animals are dehydrated when exposed to too much heat.

2. Excessive heat of the sun helps the plants in the process of photosynthesis.
3. Exposure of plants and animals to excessive heat and light can kill them.
4. Giving water to animals can lessen the harmful effects of heat.
5. Placing the plants in a shaded place or area can kill the plants.

Based on the activity that you conducted, answer the following questions on the worksheet
provided.
1. What is the effect of the heat of the sun to the margarine?
2. Is heat important to all living things? Why do you say so?

REMEMBER:
HOW IS HEAT TRANSFERRED?

The transfer of heat through solid materials is called conduction. There are
materials that allow heat to flow easily. We call them conductors. Metals are good
conductors. That’s why we use them as cooking utensils because heat moves fast through
the metal pan of the food. There are materials through which heat passes slowly or not at
all. We call these as insulators.
The transfer of heat from one place to
another by movement of fluids is called
convection. Fluids include liquids and
gases. Convection involves the motion of
fluids in currents. When water is heated in a
kettle, the molecules at the bottom get
heated first. The heated molecules move
and rise pushing the top molecules, which
are cold to the bottom. The colder molecules
sink, get heated at the bottom and move up.
Warm fluid rises until the fluid is evenly
heated and you see bubbles forming.

This is also true with winds and breezes.

Warm air rise, expands and cools. Cool air
sinks. Convection is the reason why we have
wind movements and local breezes.

Heat can also be transmitted across empty

space or vacuum. This is called radiation.
Radiation does not depend on the presence of
matter to transfer heat. The heat we receive
from the sun is radiant energy. Radiant energy
travels as waves through space. Heat waves hit
Earth and cause warming. Our atmosphere traps the warmth. Your house gets warm when
the sun’s waves or rays travel through a window and are trapped in your house. Heat
waves are invisible. All warm objects radiate or give off heat waves. Some other examples
of heat transfer by radiation are the heat you feel when you are near a fire source, the heat
given off by an electric heater, and the heat near a hot oven.

ASSESSMENT

A. Directions: True or False. Write True if the statement is correct and False if the
statement is incorrect. Write it on the answer sheet provided.

1. Human beings have activities which can only be done during sunny days and not on
rainy days.
2. The sun’s heat and light does not affect man’s activities.
3. People make salt, dry fish and leather anytime.
4. People plant rice only during rainy days.
5. Drying fish is done during sunny days because fish dry faster during this time.

B. Directions: Read the following questions carefully. Write the letter of the correct
answer in your worksheet.
1. Convection takes place only in liquids and __________.
a. gases
b. energies
c. solids
d. states

2. A conductor transfers heat __________.

a. slowly b. quickly c. all at once d. not at all

3. Temperature is measured with a __________.

a. thermometer
b. barometer
c. wind vane

4. ___________ is the transfer of heat through space.

a. convection
b. radiation
c. conduction

5. Rising warm air currents is an example of:

a. radiation
b. conduction
c. convection
