Procedure for Polarity and Continuity Test

Issue Date 24 Sep 2020 QI.P.6006

1. Scope

The purpose of this procedure is to streamline and standardize the process of Polarity and Continuity Test.
The scope of this procedure is to ensure the electrical installation is in compliance with SBC 401 Chapter 61.
This procedure is applicable to employees, who are involved in the provision of Polarity and Continuity Test.

2. Reference Standards
- SBC 401 Chapter 61

3. Equipment & Tools Used

Megger
4. Procedure

TUV Austria ensures that a qualified and experienced Inspector is delivering this service with the help of a
Calibrated Megger. Inspector shall perform the service taking steps including but not limited to;

• Review the Scope of Work to understand the work volume and Meeting with client focal point to
prepare a schedule.

• Indentifying items, which are to be inspected, with the help of client representative.

• Review the previous inspection reports if available.

• Taking all necessary Safety precautions prior to inspection. Implement LOTO procedure if necessary.

• To ensure that the installation circuits/equipment will function as intended, it is necessary that the
following tests be performed:

 Isolate the active conductors by turning the main switch OFF and tagging.

 Confirm consumer and sub mains cables/connections by simply testing from the point of supply or
distribution board to the main switchboard using an ohm meter and long test loads. Test result ≈0Ω.

 Confirm active conductor switching by using an ohm meter with the long lead connected to the active
conductor at the switchboard and the short lead connected to the switch terminals (one at a time) in the
following manner:
i) Switch ON ≈0 Ω for both terminals.
ii) Switch OFF ≈0Ω for one terminal and ‘infinity’ for the other terminal.

• With the MEN link in place, confirm the polarity of socket outlets using a 10Ω resistor and an ohm
meter. Connect the 10Ω resistor between the circuit active conductor and the neutral bar then at each
socket outlet connect one lead of the multi-meter to the earth terminal and the second lead to the active
terminal. Test the resistance value for:
i) socket outlet switch OFF ≈‘infinity’.
ii) Socket outlet switch ON ≈10Ω.
