1. Scope

The purpose of this procedure is to streamline and standardize the process of Inspection of Installation of
Cabinets, Enclosures and Junction Boxes .The scope of this procedure is to determine compliance status of
Installation of Cabinets, Enclosures and Junction Boxes. This procedure is applicable to employees, who are
involved in the provision of Inspection of Installation of Cabinets, Enclosures and Junction Boxes.

- SBC 401 Chapter 61 & 55

3. Equipment & Tools Used


- MIT520/2 ( Make: Megger company) – Multi-meter ( Make : Fluke type 87 v )
4. Procedure

TUV Austria ensures that a qualified and experienced Inspector is delivering this service with the help
of a calibrated insulation resistance device. Inspector shall perform the service taking steps including
but not limited to ;

• Review the Scope of Work to understand the work volume and Meeting with client focal point to
prepare a schedule.
• Indentifying items, which are to be inspected, with the help of client representative.
• Review the previous inspection reports if available.
• Taking all necessary Safety precautions prior to inspection.
• Ensuring removal of protection screens/covers by the client to gain access to the components.
• Inspection for physical damage & proper connection.
• Knockout seals must close all unused openings in boxes or fittings.
• All metal boxes are usually required to be grounded.
• At least 6 inches of free conductors must be left at each outlet box. Three inches must extend from the
edge of a box less than 8 inches in any dimension.
• Conduits must not be connected to the sides of round boxes, only to square smooth sides.
• Boxes may be recessed 1/4 inch or less for noncombustible material.
• Each outlet box must have a cover, faceplate, or fixture canopy to complete installation.
• Volume of original box may be increased by the cubic inches marked on the plaster ring.
• All boxes used to install lighting fixtures must be designed so that a lighting fixture may be attached.
• Boxes must be rigidly fastened to the surface upon which they are mounted.
• Boxes shall not use suspended ceiling wire as a sole supporting means unless associated with electrical
equipment designed for suspended ceilings.
• Boxes mounted in a wall of combustible material must be flush with surface or project from it.
• Junction boxes must be accessible without it being necessary to remove or disturb any part of the
building. However, lift-out panels in suspended ceilings are considered accessible.
• Preparing an independent report with colour photographs.

6. Checklist

Item Inspection Activity Comments

1. Identify wet and damp locations and the suitability of boxes and
fittings.
2. Check boxes and conduit bodies for adequate space for
conductors.
3. Verify that boxes and conduit bodies for conductors 4 AWG and
larger are adequately sized.
4. Verify that raceways and cables are secured to boxes.
5. Check for closure of unused openings other than those permitted
as part of the design of listed equipment.
6. Verify that boxes in walls and ceilings are flush with the finished
surface or, if surfaces are noncombustible, within 1⁄4 in. (6 mm) of
the finished surface.
7. Check for excessive gaps between edges of boxes and plaster,
plasterboard, or drywall surfaces.
8. Verify that boxes are securely fastened and supported.
9. Check boxes for adequate depth for the equipment that will be
installed within them.
10. Check for covers or canopies on boxes.
11. Check lighting fixture outlet boxes for suitability.
12. Check floor boxes and receptacle/cover assemblies for listing.
13. Check listing and installation of boxes used for support of ceiling
suspended (paddle) fans.
14. Verify that all boxes are accessible.
15. Verify that support means for nonmetallic boxes are outside the
box or otherwise isolated from contact with conductors.
16. Verify that cabinets or cutout boxes are suitable and properly
installed in any wet or damp locations.
17. Verify that cabinets in walls do not have excessive gaps at the
edges and are flush with the finished surface or, if surfaces are
non-combustible, within 1⁄4 in. (6 mm) of the finished surface.
18. Check for closure of conductor openings.
19. Verify that cables are secured to cabinets and cutout boxes or
that the conditions for cables with nonmetallic sheaths are met.
20. Check wiring and bending space in cabinets and cutout boxes.
21. Check cabinets and cutout boxes for adequate space for
conductors and for splices and taps where they exist.
