1. Scope
The purpose of this procedure is to streamline and standardize the process of Inspection and Verification of
Cable Trays. The scope of this procedure to identify non compliances and unsafe conditions that exist in the
Cable Trays. This procedure is applicable to employees, who are involved in the provision of Inspection and
Verification of Cable Trays.

4. Procedure
QI ensures that a qualified and experienced Inspector is delivering this service with the help of a
Calibrated Infra-red Camera. Inspector shall perform the service taking steps including but not limited to;

• Review the Scope of Work to understand the work volume and Meeting with client focal point to
prepare a schedule.
• Indentifying items, which are to be inspected, with the help of client representative.
• Review the previous inspection reports if available.
• Taking all necessary Safety precautions prior to inspection. Implement LOTO procedure if necessary.
• Ensuring removal of protection screens/covers by the client to gain access to the components.
• Carrying out inspection with the help of the Checklist as given below.
• Testing of Cable Tray installation
• Confirmation of materials to specifications and Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings.
• Visual inspection of finish/coating & dimensional check of cable tray width, rung space, height, & run
length.
• Check all braces and supports are adequate to handle weight of the tray & cables in accordance with the
detailed drawings.
• Inspect the installed supports to ensure that it is levelled and aligned vertically and the whole assembly
is rigid.
• Check the expansion joints or connectors are properly installed.
• Check of cable tray installation if it does not conflict with other services or equipment.
• Where supports are bolted to structural steel, ensure that all bolts, nuts, etc. are correctly installed &
securely fixed.
• Hold down clamps shall be installed properly and are anchored on required locations.
• Ensure no sharp edges & burr that would cut or damage the cables.
• All metallic cable tray systems shall be bonded at every 25m of length. Coupler plates or bonding
jumpers shall be used with every section and across each tray joint to give electrical continuity.
• Earth bonding jumpers are checked for proper connection and bonded to main grounding grid.

stops are provided to prevent the spread of a
fire or the by-products of combustion.
6. Cable trays in hazardous locations contain only
the wiring permitted in such locations.
7. Cable trays are properly supported in
accordance with the installation instructions.
8. All cable trays are filled in a range from a single
layer to roughly a 50 per cent fill of the cross-
sectional area of the cable tray.
9. The weight of the cables does not surpass the
maximum weight limit of the tray.
10. Heat build-up is not excessive in the cable tray,
and insulation on live conductors does not
show signs of deterioration.
11. All cables are up to fixed wiring standards, and
there is no flexible cable used in the tray.
12. All cables are properly secured in the cable tray
at regular intervals.
13. To prevent unexpected deterioration, cable ties
and other fastening devices are appropriate for
the conditions they are used in.
14. Additional cable tray systems are added above,
below or next to overfilled trays to carry some
of the load.
15. The cable tray system is properly earthed for
personal safety and protection against arcing.
16. There are no abandoned cables within cable
trays.
17. Live wires an employee may be exposed to in
cable tray installations are de-energised before
employees begin work on or near them.
