Introduction to Physics
Theory of Thermodynamics:
What is Physics? Deals with heat & temp

Physics is a branch of science

that deals with the study
interaction of particles. Theory of Classical Mechanics:
Deals with interaction of masses

Theory of Relativity:
Deals with study of high speed particle
Theory of Electromagnetism:
Deals with interaction of charges
Theory of Quantum Mechanics:
Deals with interaction of molecules
Introduction to Physics

Why study Physics?

❖ Everything we see, hear, & feel is
subject matter belongs to physics
❖ Appreciate and explain the beauty of
the environment
❖ Foundation of sciences
❖ Technology rely in physics

7 Fundamental Quantities in Physics

1. Mass (M) [kg]
2. Length (L) [m]
3. Time (T) [s]
4. Electric Current (I) [A]
5. Absolute Temperature (Ta) [K]
6. Luminous Intensity of light (Iv) [cd]
7. Amount of Substance (n) [mol]

Dimensional Quantities in Mechanics

1. Mass (M) [kg]
2. Length (L) [m]
3. Time (T) [s]
Introduction to Physics

Two types of physics quantities

➢ Scalar Quantities – describes magnitude only
e.g. Time, mass, speed, distance, temperature etc.
➢ Vector Quantities – describes both
magnitude and direction
e.g. Force, weight, velocity, displacement etc.

Measurements
❖ The questions of how much and how
large is MEASUREMENTS.
❖ Comparing two objects, one is object
to be measured and one is based on
standards.

System of Measurements
❖ Metric system
o MKS or SI : meter-kilogram-seconds
o CGS : centimeter-gram-seconds
❖ English/ British system
o FPS : foot-poundal-seconds
Note: The ability in converting units for consistency is very important?
