1. A Truck weighing 10 tonnes is required to accelerate at a rate of 2.

30 m/sec 2
in the first gear from a speed of 10 kmph. The upward gradient is 3 percent
and the co-efficient of rolling resistance is 0.022. The frontal area of the
truck is 4.15 m2 and the co-efficient of air resistance is 0.48 kg/m 3. The truck
tyres have the radius of 0.50 m. The inflation pressure reduces this by a
factor 0.945. The rare axle gear ratio is 4.90:1 and the first gear ratio is
4.70:1. Calculate the engine power (in watts and h.p.) needed and the
speed of the engine in R.P.M. Assume the transmission efficiency of 0.80.
2. A car travelling at a speed of 80kmph on a level cement concrete road with
coefficient of rolling resistance is 0.018 is suddenly allowed to coast by
switching off the engine and putting the gear in neutral. Assume the weight
of car as 1.75 tonnes, the frontal area of the car is 2.00 m 2 and the
coefficient of air resistance is 0.4. Determine the deceleration rate and the
distance travelled by the car after switching of the engine.

f’ = f(1+0.01(V-50)) = 0.018 X 1.3 =0.054

f = 0.018

ma = mf’g+(CA.A.V )

a = (mf’g+(CA.A.V2))/m = (1750 X 0.054 X9.81) + (0.4 X 2 X 80/3.6 X80/3.6))/1750

a = - 0.45m/sec2

(S)d = 548mts

V2-U2 = 2aS, S=(22.22*22.22) / (2*0.45)

V= 0, U= 80kmph, U = 80/3.6 = 22.22 M/Sec a= -0.45 m/sec2
