Q1.During vacation,Neha got an opportunity to visit a village. She found that ladies (2)
cooking food in open pans. She advised them to use pressure cookers instead of open
containers in order to save time and fuel.
a. How does cooking in a pressure cooker help in saving time?
b. How does cooking in a pressure cooker save fuel?

Q2.When a driver in a moving car sees a hazard ahead ,the car travels a certain distance before
the driver reacts and applies the brakes. The distance travelled by the car in this time is called the
thinking distance .This is followed by the braking distance ,which is the distance covered by the
car after the brakes are applied and before the car stops.
Study the table given below and answer the question that follows.

A car is travelling along a road at 80km/h when a tree falls across the road 54 m away .What
would probably happen? (2)

Q3.

The growth of plants occurs only in certain specific regions. This is because the dividing tissue,
also known as meristematic tissue, is located only at these points. Depending on the region where
they are present, meristematic tissues are classified as apical, lateral and intercalary. New cells
produced by meristem are initially like those of meristem itself, but as they grow and mature, their
characteristics slowly change and they become differentiated as components of other tissues.
a) Which meristem helps in increasing the girth of the plant?
b) What intercalary meristem is responsible for? (2)
Section-B (Analytical Thinking) 8 Minutes
Q1.Madhu poured 100 mL of water to each of four different glass vessels. (2)
She kept all the four vessels under the Sun. Madhu noted the time taken for the water in each vessel
to evaporate completely.

a.Which of these questions can be answered based on the results of Madhu’s activity?
A. Does the rate of evaporation of a liquid depend on its open surface area?
B. Does the rate of evaporation of a liquid depend on its surrounding temperature?
C. Does the rate of evaporation of a liquid depend on the material of its container?
D. Does the rate of evaporation of a liquid depend on the amount of moisture in air?

b.Why did Madhu pour an equal amount of water in each vessel?

Q2.An airplane is flying horizontally at a steady speed in a straight line. The diagram shows three of
the four forces acting on it.(a)In order to fly horizontally at a steady speed, which two of the forces
shown on the airplane must be equal?(b)What is the name of the fourth force acting on the plane?(2)

Q3.Raghunath accidentally dropped a bag of raisins into water. He did not remove it from water by
mistake. Later his Master scolded him for spilling raisins. So he placed them in the sun. After a few
hours, the raisins were apparently dry and resembled the original raisins.
(1) What did he observe initially and later ?
(2) Which membrane acts as semi-permeable membrane in this endosmosis and exosmosis?(2M)

Section-C (Reasoning) 10 Minutes

Directions:For Q1-3, a statement of Assertion is given, and a corresponding statement of Reason is
given just below it. Of the statements, given below, mark the correct answer as:
(a) Both assertion and reason are true, and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
(b) Both assertion and reason are true, but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
(c) Assertion is true, but reason is false.
(d) Assertion is false, but reason is true.

Q1.ASSERTION-Compounds composed of metals and non-metals contain charged species called

ions.
REASON-Metals tend to lose electrons to form positively charged ions (cations), while non-metals
tend to gain electrons to form negatively charged ions (anions). (1)
Q2. ASSERTION-Different types of crops required different photoperiods.
REASON- photoperiods means duration of sunlight. (1)

Q3. ASSERTION- Draught breeds of cows are used mainly as beasts of burden.
REASON-Draught breeds of cow give less milk but are strong and sturdy.(1)

Q4.The velocity time graph of an object thrown vertically up is: (1)

Q5.The drivers in Iceland, when driving a 4×4 car in the difficult environment of Iceland, might have
to deflate and inflate the tyres. What do you think the drivers do so?(1)

Section-D (Observation and inference) 7 Minutes

Q1. In the diagrams given below, hydrogen atoms are represented by white circles, and (2)
oxygen atoms are represented by black circles.
a.Which of the diagrams best represents water?
b. Write the chemical formula of water and name the elements present in it.
Q2.Look at the experiment to measure the speed of sound as shown in the figure given below.

The wooden block and the two microphones are arranged in a straight line. The student bangs the
blocks and the sound is picked up first by microphone 1 and then by microphone 2.The first activates
the timer and the second stops it.The speed of sound is calculated from the distance between the two
microphones and the time taken by the sound to travel between them is picked.Explain why the
wooden blocks and the two microphones must be in a straight line. (2)

Q3.Tiny pores are found on the surface of the leaves of plants. These pores are called stomata.
These stomata surrounded by the kidney shaped guard cells provide many vital functions to the
plants.

Which of the following functions is not served by the stomata for the plants? Explain one function of
stomata which helps us.
(a) Exchange of gases, particularly CO2 and O2, with atmosphere
(b) Loss of water in the form of vapours during transpiration
(c) Helps to create pressure for the water to rise upward, by its process of transpiration
(d) Helps the leaves to carry out the process of photosynthesis (2)
