Mayon

Kapag lumayo, isa siyang magandang sikyung nakatanod,
Handa sa pagkapkap, naghihintay sa iyong pagpasok.

about “Mayon” by
Kristian Sendon
Cordero
The poem called "Mayon" by Kristian Sendon Cordero, was published in 2004. It’s a short
poem that reflects on the legend and the reality of the Mayon Volcano, one of the most famous
landmarks in the Philippines. The poem is written in Filipino, the national language of the
country, and it uses deep words that it is so difficult to understand the real message it wants to
convey. The final stanza of the poem is the most striking and memorable part of the poem, as it
captures the essence of the volcano's nature and impact. The persona describes the Mayon
volcano by what he saw in the post card image in the Antigo Merkado (Antique Shop). As a
beautiful guard watching over the people of Albay, offering a wide view. The final image
combines the beauty or charm and the danger and threat, with the Mayon volcano being both
a warning and an invitation.
pagpasok" suggests that the lives of the area's residents can be easily taken in a volcanic
eruption, turning people into ashes. Overall, The poem of Kristian Sendon Cordero is a concise
and effective poem that explores the legend and the reality of the Mayon Volcano. It also uses
contrast and metaphor to highlight the volcano's dual nature and impact.

Discuss how the
characters in the
legend correspond to
the behavior of the
volcano in real life.
The cast or the characters in "The Legend of Daragang
Magayon'' are often seen as symbolic representations of various
elements found in nature. The protagonist Magayon is connected
to the land's beauty, while her lover Ulap/Panganoron is
connected to the storm. The context is, their union and their
tragic separation reflects the erratic nature of volcanic terrain.
The volcanic eruptions are caused by turbulent circumstances
which reflect the characters' emotions and conflicts.
