Parts and Function of Compound Microscope

For effective use and proper care of the compound microscope,

you should be familiar with its parts. The different parts of a
compound microscope may be grouped into illuminating, magnifying,
and mechanical parts.

Illuminating Parts:
- These parts provide light to the microscope.
1.Mirror
2.Condenser
3.Iris Diaphragm

Magnifying Parts:
- These parts make the object look larger. As far as the function of
the microscope is concerned, they play the most important role.
1.Eyepiece or ocular
2. Objectives
A. Low Power Objective (LPO)
II. CONTENT
B. High Power Objective (HPO)

Mechanical Parts:
- These are the parts that support the microscope and the object
being examined.
1.Base
2.Pillar
3.Arm
4.Inclination Joint
5.Stage
6.Substage
7.Body Tube
8.Draw Tube
9.Revolving nosepiece
10. Dust shield
11.Adjustment knobs
a. Coarse adjustment knob
b. Fine adjustment knob

Guide Questions:

1. Why Compound Microscope is called as such?

2. Why do you think should the objective lenses be dust-free?
3. Why must both eyes be open in viewing the specimen?
4.Why must proper lighting be obtained when you operate the microscope?

Compound Microscope is very useful in identification of diseases

becomes easy in pathology lab, in forensic laboratories also for the
ELABORATE detection of human fingerprints, and also the study of bacteria and
viruses, like covid-19 becomes easy.

ACTIVITY # ________

Parts and functions of the Compound Microscope

Objectives:

1.To identify the parts and functions of the light compound microscope.
2.To know how to handle and use the Microscope properly.

Materials:

A Compound Microscope, lens or tissue paper

Procedure:

1.Your teacher is going to demonstrate before the class, the proper ways of handling
the Microscope from the time you get it from the counter until you place it down on
the lab table. She will also point out the various parts of the Microscope and how
they are supposed to be manipulated.

2.After having been shown all the parts of the Compound Microscope, you are now
expected to be able to point them out in your own Microscope.

3.Identify first the larger parts of the Microscope which are the ARM, BASE, BODY
TUBE and the STAGE.

4. Where is the eyepiece or ocular? _______________________________

To which of the four parts in #3 is it attached? ________________________
Clean it with a lens or tissue paper.

5. Look for the objectives.

What do you call the round object that holds the objectives? ____________________
To which of the four parts in #3 are the objectives attached? ____________________

6. Which is longer, the high power objective (HPO) or the lower power objective
(LPO)? _______________________________
Look for the magnification numbers of the objectives.
What is the magnification number of the LPO? ______________________
The HPO? __________________
Put the LPO directly in line with the ocular.
