C’est le trait caractéristique de ce mouvement littéraire, qu’il veut
conquérir toutes les classes de la population, les plus basses aussi
bien que les plus hautes. Théologiens et exégètes, prédicateurs et
publicistes, tous s’efforcent de rapprocher la vieille langue rituelle de
la langue parlée par le peuple, le prototype de l’ukrainien
d’aujourd’hui. En fait quelques traités et sermons (ceux d’Hérazime
Smotritsky, de Jean de Vychnia, de Potiy et d’autres) s’en
rapprochent extrêmement.
A côté de cette littérature écrite, fleurit la poésie profane en
langue purement vulgaire, qui malheureusement ne fut pas jugée
digne d’être imprimée. Cependant le philologue tchèque
contemporain, Jan Blahoslav, nous a conservé dans sa grammaire,
achevée en 1571, le texte d’une chanson sur « le Voïvode Stepan »
qui nous donne un spécimen de la langue vulgaire parlée à cette
époque en Ukraine occidentale, d’ailleurs très voisine de celle
d’aujourd’hui. La mémoire populaire a aussi sauvé de l’oubli non
seulement des chansons séparées sur certains évènements mais
des cycles entiers, qui se sont transmis de bouche en bouche
jusqu’à nos jours et dont les particularités de forme nous révèlent
l’origine ancienne. Ce sont par exemple les récits chantés des
invasions turques ou tartares et les complaintes sur l’esclavage chez
les infidèles, qui se rattachent évidemment aux chansons serbes et
témoignent aussi qu’elles datent de l’époque où les bardes et
improvisateurs serbes étaient très nombreux en Pologne et en
Ukraine, c’est-à-dire au XVe et XVIe siècles [11] .
