THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

INTRODUCTION

Mathematics is generally considered as the most important subject at

school levels all over the world. All the major commissions and committee

report on education since independence emphasized the importance of

mathematical knowledge and its utilitarian values. In spite of all these

reports and recommendation still in the Philippines, many students

struggle with mathematics and become disaffected as they constantly

bump in two obstacles to engagement. It is an agreeable fact that,

amongst the subject taught in schools, mathematics is considered as one

of the toughest subjects. But the reason behind this might be different in

different situations. Lot more studies were conducted in this area and

researches come up with their recommendations as well. But still, the

problem of low performance in mathematics appears to be pertinent in all

levels of school education. This is a serious issue to be tackled possibly by

the teachers concerned and even the Department of Education.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In most parts of the world, mathematics is regarded as the most

significant subject taught in schools. Since independence, every

significant commission and committee report on education has underlined

the significance of math knowledge and its importance. Despite all these

findings and recommendations, mathematics is still a challenge for many

students in the Philippines, and as a result, they lose interest in the

subject. It is a well-known truth that mathematics is one of the most

challenging disciplines among those taught in schools. However, the

cause of this may vary depending on the circumstance. Many additional

studies have been done in this field, and researchers have also developed

their own set of suggestions. But even so, the issue of poor math

performance seems to apply to all levels of. However, the issue of poor

math performance seems to apply to all levels of schooling. This is a

severe problem that could possibly be addressed by the concerned

teachers and even the Department of Education. The lack of textbooks,

visual aids, and other teaching tools, among other things, is one of the

reasons why many teachers claim that teaching mathematics in senior

high school is particularly challenging. However, teachers should be in

charge of planning their students’ educational experiences. As a result,

issues that hinder the efficacy of the teaching-learning process should be

identified so that solutions can be provided to nurture and assist students’

improved learning of mathematics.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Figure 1.3. The Theoretical Framework

According to Dr. Alenka Brezavšček (2023) Mathematical skills have

long been recognised as essential not only for academic success but also

for efficient functioning in everyday life , By studying mathematics, we

train accuracy, consistency, and mental discipline, which are essential

skills needed for effective and responsible problem solving and decision

making in everyday life. Due to the global awareness of the importance of

mathematical knowledge on the one hand, and the concern expressed for

many years at various levels of education about underachievement in

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focuses on factors that can affect the performance of senior

high school students from Grade 11-12, STEM strand in Immaculate

Conception Polytechnic Meycauayan in general mathematics, this study

will take a survey on every Grade 11-12, STEM students in Immaculate

Conception Polytechnic Meycauayan. We will conduct a survey on how

they maintain their perspective by learning general mathematics as a

reference.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The challenges of modern life necessitate having strong mathematical

skills. The study of mathematics promotes holistic human growth and is

useful in everyday life. Both the special branch of education and the moral

education branch of a student's education are substantially influenced by

mathematics. As STEM students, we increasingly place less emphasis on

the methods of study and more on the mathematical theories and

applications themselves. By concentrating on the fundamental abilities

required by pupils, studying these attempts to close this gap and enable

students to learn more successfully. This research guides the student

through exercises while explaining how to work with examples and

symbols and encouraging them to utilize these tools to apply arithmetic

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter primarily presents the different research and other literature from both

foreign and local researchers, which have significant bearings on the variables

included in the research. This also includes the synthesis of the Study.

Foreign Literature

General Mathematics aims to develop learners' understanding of

concepts and techniques drawn from number and algebra, trigonometry

and world geometry, sequences, finance, networks and decision

mathematics and statistics, in order to solve applied problems.

Foreign Studies

According to Ishumi Klein and Orton (2018 et.al.), (Journal of

Education and Practice-2.1 The role of language in Mathematics

Instruction. The primary role of language is to enable both the teacher

and learners share mathematical knowledge with precision. A teacher

needs to use language suitable for the cognitive development of learners.

understand well what being taught.
Brgy. Saluysoy, City of Meycauayan, Bulacan

According to Chris Rasmussen and Karen Marrongelle (2019

et.al.), teaching in a manner consistent with reform recommendations is
a challenging and often overwhelming task. Part of this challenge involves
DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

using students' thinking and understanding as a basis for the

development of mathematical ideas. The purpose of this article is to
address this challenge by developing the notion of pedagogical content
tool.

A pedagogical content tool is a device such as a graph, diagram,

equation, or verbal statement that a teacher intentionally uses to connect

to student thinking while moving the mathematical agenda forward. We

tender two examples of pedagogical content tools: Transformational

record and generative alternative.

According to Realistic Mathematics Education (RME 2022 et.al. )

These two pedagogical content tools are put forth as instructional

counterparts to the . design heuristics of emergent models and guided

reinvention, respectively. We illustrate the pedagogical content tools of

transformational record and generative alternative by drawing on

examples from two classroom teaching experiments in undergraduate

differential equations.

According to Kaiser-Messmer G. (2020 et.al.), differences in attitude

towards mathematics between boys and girls were evaluated in an

empirical study carried out in (west)German secondary schools during

1989 on a group of 748 students aged 14–19. The main focus of the

study was to ascertain whether the results from previous studies of the

which reported significant differences between boys' and girls' attitudes to

mathematics, were still valid.

According to Fennema & Sherman , Sells . Tobias & Donady ,

(Carey, Graf & Ruddell, , (Ernest, , Fennema, ,; Pederson,

Shihedling, & Johnson, 2018 et.al.), the fact that large numbers of

women avoid mathematics in the latter years of high school and to a

certain degree do not achieve as well as males even when they continue

with mathematics According to (Fennema & Sherman, 2020 et.al.)

has been of increasing concern to educators, psychologists, sociologists,

and other students of human behavior. This deficit in mathematics

education has serious implications for the career options available to both

women who attend 4 year colleges and to those who choose to enroll in

more vocationally oriented programs .

Local literature

General Mathematics is a game played according to certain simple rules

with meaningless marks on paper.” (David Hilbert) “Mathematics is the

door and key of the sciences.” ( Roger Bacon) “Mathematics is the science

of what is clear by itself.

Local Studies

According to Emerson Peteros, Antonietta Gamboa, Jonathan O.

Etcuban, Aahron Dinauanao, Regina Sitoy, Redjie Arcadio (2019),

Self-concept in mathematics can be defined as student ratings of their

skills, ability, enjoyment, and interest in mathematics is seen as an

essential factor in their achievement in math. This study assessed the
self-concept and academic performance in Math of the Grade 10 students
of a public national high school, Cebu, Philippines. The study employed
descriptive correlational research.

Based on our opinion

mathematics can define a students ratings of their skills, ability,

enjoyment and interest in mathematics. when a student enjoys

mathematics they seek opportunities to enhance their mathematical skills

According to Ruth Quintillan-bugas (2020) (LEAPS: Miriam College

Faculty Research Journal, vol. 33 no. 1), This paper aims to

understand the learning styles and personality types of high and low

performing high school students in Math. It is through understanding

these factors that the teaching-learning process can become more

effective and meaningful. The basis for classifying students into high or

low was their Math grade. Students with Math grades of 79 and below

were classified as low performing and students with Math grades of 90

and above were classified as high performing.

According to Brown-Jeffy, 2018, Hofferth & Sandberg, 2021,

Marilys Hernandez (2018), etc.), many researches around the world

were being conducted due to the existing trends that the mathematics

performance is being affected by the socio-economic status of the

parents. Most researches were conducted correlating mathematics

DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

socio-economic status of the students wherein, it is found out that

learners who got higher grades in mathematics belonged to the upper
class of the family in the society.

According to Kamoru & Ramon (2018), on the other hand, most

researchers had reported that boys have more positive self-concept than

girls in Mathematics It was also observed that boys outperform girls in

standardized test in Math, but girls perform better when specific tests are

given to measure their knowledge and understanding on the topics

discussed.(Ganley et al., 2013; Spencer et al., 1999). Several established

results which proved that boys perform better in Math exist, but still, this

area should be explored further to affirm or contradict the previous

findings presented in this literature.

According to Audinez A. S. (2019), the 2-year Philippine Senior High

School (SHS) commenced only in 2016. This phonomyography study

aimed to describe, explain and explore the teaching of SHS Mathematics

to include problems encountered. and interventions done by the teachers.

Two schools in Quezon City were purposively chosen to be the study site

with a maximal variation sampling where 8 teacher-respondents

participated in the study. Classroom observation and one-on-one

interview were conducted with the aid of self-designed protocols.

semester. Results show that the overall academic performance of Grade

11-12 students in General Mathematics is Mean=86.49, SD=6.53. This
brief report also reveals the academic performance and descriptives of
Grade 11-12, students when grouped according to Sex, Strand, and
School Year attended. It also shows that there exists significant
differences in the academic performance of Grade 11-12 senior high
school students when grouped according to Sex, Strand, and School Year
attended. Academic performance, according to Dinglasan & Patena
(2013), relates to how students handle their studies and how they cope
with or complete the tasks assigned to them by their lecturers. The ability
to study and remember facts, as well as the ability to transmit acquired
knowledge vocally or on paper, are typically assessed through grades.
One of the school’s key goals is to improve academic achievement as
indicated by examination results.

The goal of transmitting knowledge and skills to people who attend them,

with the goal of improving students’ academic performance at the

forefront. The performance of students is crucial in producing high-quality

graduates who will serve as outstanding leaders and personnel for the

country, and thus be accountable for its economic and social progress .

Because educational services result in the transformation of learners’

knowledge, life skills, and behavior, they are typically intangible and

difficult to assess Students receive assistance and support from school

personnel, family members, and the community to improve their

academic performance. This social aid is critical for pupils to achieve their
academic achievement goals . Apart from the social framework, parents’

involvement in their children’s education improves their chances of

academic success.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This study was conducted using primary data. A descriptive research methodology

was used for this study. Descriptive method research involves the collection of data

to test hypotheses or answer questions concerning the current status of the subject

of the study. The researchers used this method because it is the most appropriate

method to use and is often used as the data collection technique for all kinds of

research.

The sampling technique used by researchers in this study is purposive sampling.

The sample in the study was calculated using the weighted mean and percentage

formula. Based on the calculation, the sample size was 10 students from a

Immaculate Conception Polytechnic Meycauayan City Bulacan who were grade 11-

12 -STEM strand. The research data is in the form of primary and secondary data.

Qualitative data were collected using a questionnaire by researchers from various

existing sources, either from official bodies or institutions, books, reports, journals, or

other scientific studies.

3.1. Population, Sample Size and Sampling Technique

A four-point scale questionnaire containing (4) Strongly Disagree, (3) Disagree, (2)

Agree, and (1) Strongly Agree is the method used to measure the response of the

sampling population, which includes the students at the Grade 11-12- STEM strand.

All the researchers need is senior high school students for the respondents in the

3.2. Description of Respondents

The researchers distributed the interview survey questions through face to face. To

all 10 students Grade 11-12- STEM strand from Immaculate Conception

Polytechnic Meycauayan.: In gathering data for our research, this may happen this

school year, 2023–2024, for students only.

3.3. Research Instrument

Since this research paper was conducted during the face-to-face classes the

researchers decided to use the research instrument of a face-to-face interview

directly to the corresponding respondents respectively.

3.4. Data- Gathering Procedure

The researchers spent a lot of time, effort, and cooperation in developing their

questionnaire to serve its intended respondents. The Interview survey questionnaire

was created using appropriate questions from related research studies. In the

questionnaire, the Likert scale was used to determine if the respondents are satisfied

or not base on their opinion.

After the research adviser approved the researchers will start conducting interview to

their respondents. Participants were given enough time to respond before the

researchers done with. Lastly, the data gathered from this study were tallied and

computed for interpretation according to the frequency of items checked by the

researchers.

3.5. Statistical Analysis

The following statistical procedures were used to interpret the data gathered from the

respondents of the study.

Simple Percentage. The demographic profile variables of the respondents were

analyzed using a simple percentage with the following formula:

P = F/N (100)

Where:

P = Percentage

F = Frequency of each category

N = Total number of respondents

100 = Constant multiplier

Weighted Mean. This statistical tool was used to compute the weight of the

responses in the questionnaire as assigned by the respondents during the actual

data gathering procedure. The formula for the weighted mean is as follows:

WM = Σ FW/N

Where:

WM = Weighted Mean

Σ = Summation symbol

F = Frequency for each option

W = Assigned Weight

N = Total number of frequencies

symptoms of elderly depression can affect every aspect of your life, impacting your

energy, appetite, sleep, and interest in work, hobbies, and relationships. Unfortunately, all

too many depressed older adults fail to recognize the symptoms of depression, or don't

take the steps to get the help they need.

Demographic Profile of the respondents in terms of.

As shown in table 1.1, Age distribution of Respondents, out of 10 respondents, the

data was interpreted from highest to the lowest frequency. 17-18 years frequency of

7 or 70%, while 15-16 years old were 2 of 20% and the lowest frequency of 1 or

10%. 19-21 years old.

This implies that most of the respondent’s under the age distribution of Respondents

was 17-18 years old.

As shown in table 1.2, the Sex distribution of Respondents, out of 10 respondents,

the data was interpreted from highest to lowest frequency, female has the highest

frequency of 5 counts with a percentage of 50%, followed by Male having a

frequency of 5 counts with a percentage of 50%.

This implies that the respondents were both sexes with 5 counts or 50% Female and

Male 50 counts or 50% with a total of 10 as frequency and percentage of 100%

CONCLUSIONS

We the researchers finds that the findings of the study the following

conclusions are drawn: Majority of the respondents are 17 years old which is
5 or 50% percent of the total population, males which is 5 percent, and 50%

percent of the population are from STEM 11-12 strand SHS -ICP Meycauayan

which are under student-related factors and instructional materials used by

the teacher which is under teacher-related factors. Therefore, Propose

intervention is supplementary activities since respondents showed low

interest in the subject. Supplementary activities that will practice good study

habits. The teacher may also use some activities such as games, graphing

software, and integration of all STEM strand in ICP Meycauayan City Bulacan

and other related activities that will boost student interest since majority are

from STEM 11-12 strand and providing workbook/textbooks as reference for

the students.

RECOMMENDATIONS

We the researchers finds that various factors inside and outside school that

contribute for the quality of academic performance of students. This research

study only focused on some of the factors inside the classroom that influence

the student’s achievement scores.

We the researchers finds the key aspect for the educators is to educate their

students effectively so that they may be able to show quality performance in

their academics. To achieve this objective, it is necessary for the educators to

understand better about the factors that may contribute in the academic
success of students which means educators will carry those risks and

challenges on their part.
