Reading/ESL LESSON PLAN Week of:

Unit:
OBJECTIVE INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY Time Materials Differentiation

Vocabulary This is set for

Here is where I write down the vocabulary for this week’s lesson. This does 120 min. block
not mean that we entirely focus just on these vocabulary words however in but can be
order for my students to be successful in this week’s lesson these are the adapted
words they must know.
Engage: Do Now 30
This part of the lesson plan is usually at the beginning of class. Due to the min
nature of my school, my students only get a 90 minute reading class. To help
them get in some exploratory reading time – I have labeled this our: Self-
exploratory reading.
During this time, students can choose from variety of activities. Sometimes I
choose them or they have the option to choose themselves.
In this
Some great self-exploratory activities: section I give
-Students choose books to read based on genre for the week options for
-Students free-write or write to the teacher
-Students independent read
-Students work in their vocabulary journals/notebooks (this can also be a
time to review previous vocabulary)
Quick
Not every day has to be the same. Mondays can be vocabulary, Tuesday, Learners
Wednesday can be writing, and Thursday, Friday can be independent
reading. Play around to see what works best for your class.
Special
Day of the Week

Timing is greatest on Monday’s because it’s like a review day/students Resource

getting pumped for the week. After Monday students spend 15 minutes (SPED)
exploring
Teacher Modeling: (I Do) 5 ESL
During this time, I model what I want the students to learn. Min
While this is teacher led, I encourage a lot of classroom discussion and Previous
student participation.
Lesson
Sometimes I split the I DO into two parts depending on the lesson. The first
section will be the short portion (usually no longer than five minutes) Connections

In this second portion, I do an activity with the students that may require a bit 15
more time or length of information. min
However, I do not always do a two-part I DO

Guided Practice: (We Do) 15

During the first portion of WE DO students take guided notes. I use the right min
side of the journal for notes and the left side for activities related to the
lesson we learned.
During the second portion of the WE DO, students complete an activity that 30
models what we practiced during the I DO portion. Timing can vary from
30-45 minutes. Students typically work in small groups or with partners min
during this portion.

This is also a great time to circulate the class to see who is mastering it

Activities can be part of their journal or separate. It depends on your desired

outcome for the activity. I generally use construction paper and have students
present finished activities at the end of a group activity
Independent Practice: (You Do) 30
This part of the instruction can be used for multiple purposes: as station time, min
small group time, a time for students to practice individually and then turn in
as an exit ticket or a continuation of the Guided Practice. Below I’ve given
an outline of some alternatives:

For today we are doing….

(all you would need to do is highlight the portion you decide to work on
As I build up my
for that week and prep your materials)
resources and materials, I
plan to pass them along.
Stations: Students will choose between 3-6 activities. One of these activities My lesson plans are
will involve working with the teacher –the other activities include a language meant to be usable for
arts station, writing station, vocabulary station, reading station, enrichment students in grades 4-6
station (reinforcing what you practiced today), and computer station.

Small group: Today students will continue to work on classroom assignment

from guided practice (or build on assignment through enrichment activities)
while small groups rotate to work with teacher

Individual: students will work on reading activity using strategy (ies)

learned. We will peer check/teacher check later

This is also a great time to pull small groups with students have been
struggling
EVALUATION
Evaluation can take place in many different forms
Fr

Typically happens on Fridays and does not have to be standard testing formats. I usually
offer a few different options for evaluating the students understanding
