To whom it may concern,

I am writing to express my interest in the doctoral program in the Department of Bioengineering and
medical-surgical sciences at Politecnico di Torino, as it has always been my age-long ambition to become a
clinical researcher in the medical and dental field. I am a Doctor of Dental Medicine that graduated full
marks with honours and publication dignity in Turin in 2017 with the thesis “An evaluation of the efficacy
cervico-facial myalgia treatment with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has on the
intensity of somatosensory tinnitus”.

I was awarded with the silver medal of the University of Turin to the best thesis in Dental Medicine of the
Academic Year 2016/2017. I was then accepted into a three-year orthodontic residency program to deepen
the study of the orthodontic specialty at the University of Milano Statale where I graduated 02/03/2021
with honours with the thesis “Volumetric changes of the dental pulp in central incisors and first molars
before and after maxillary expansion. A Retrospective Cone Beam CT study”.

Thanks to the swift progress of my dental degree and orthodontic internship, it is glaring that studying and
doing research are endeavors I would like to engage in even more. During my residency I started to write
scientific papers on the topics that I have always found more interesting, that is orthodontics, maxillofacial
development, digital dentistry, stem cells application, tissue engineering and 3D printing technologies.

The design of the publication that I have published are longitudinal studies, cross-sectional studies, pilot
studies and method presentations, in vitro studies and reviews of the literature. I have served as reviewer
for several peer-reviewed journals like BMC oral health, Pesquisa Brasileira Em Odontopediatria E Clínica
Integrada, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Materials (Basel), Journal of
Clinical Medicine, Methods and Protocols.

I have given a lecture with professor Gassino entitled “prosthetic rehabilitation of the elderly patient”
during the congress entitled “XXX Giornate Odontoiatriche Daune” in Foggia 25th September 2020. I spoke
about my dental degree thesis (tinnitus and cervico-facial myalgia treatment with TENS) at the conference
held in Turin the 9th February 2019 by Associazione italiana odontoiatri entitled “MEDICE CURA TE IPSUM”.
I spoke at the conference “XXVII Collegio dei Docenti Universitari di discipline Odontostomatologiche ETS
(CDUO)” held in Milan about my residency program thesis 23th April 2021. I spoke at the congress entitled
“ORTOGNATODONZIA 40 ANNI DELLA SCUOLA DI MILANO” 15th February 2019 aboui dental application of
facial scanners.

I am currently running a special issue as guest editor entitled “Tissue Engineering Updates and Perspective
in Dentistry” in Biomedicines (ISSN 2227-9059; I.F. 4.7; JCR ranking: Q1 in Pharmacology & Pharmacy) that
is the scientific journal affiliated with the Society for Regenerative Medicine. I am co-editor of
QUINTESSENZA INTERNAZIONALE, that is the official journal of the Italian Academy of Osseointegration. I
am currently enrolled in a scientific commission of the Italian Society of Dental Care in Special Need
patients (SIOH) that aims to define the italian guidelines for the orthodontic treatment in the special need
patient by defining clinical, psychosocial, economic appropriateness and contextualized approach in
different categories of patients with disabilities. I am also a member of a non-profit organisation that aims
to promote basic oral health in low-income countries and in the weakest segments of the population in
Italy.

The interdisciplinary collaboration between engineering and medical sciences is the key to develop
innovative solutions in dentistry, like bone tissue engineering and digital work flow. I am applying to this
PhD program because I think it will provide me with the most updated knowledge in the field thus allowing
me to integrate medical and engineering knowledge in order to make research projects feasible and usable
in the health sector. Applying for a PhD in Bioengineering and surgical sciences at Politecnico di Torino is an
opportunity I would love to dedicate myself too wholeheartedly, and I hope that during my stay in Torino, I
will be able to contribute to the scientific community in the best way that I can. I am interested in a PhD
program in order to deepen my knowledge and improve my skills in conducting and writing valuable
research in dentistry. Considering my academic performance so far and my desire to enrich mine and
others' knowledge in dental and medical science, I am convinced that I will be a valuable addition to the
programme. I hope to be given this chance, as I am confident that I am capable of meeting and even
exceeding your expectations.

Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

Davide Cavagnetto
