1.

A rectangular reinforced concrete beam with width of 250 mm and effective depth of 500 mm is subjected
to 150 kN·m bending moment. The beam is reinforced with 4 – 25 mm ø bars. Use modular ratio n = 9.
What is the maximum stress of concrete?
What is the maximum stress of steel?
What is the total compressive force in concrete?

2. A reinforced concrete beam 300 mm wide has an effective depth of 600 mm. It is reinforced with 4-32 mm
diameter bars for tension. f’c = 21 MPa and fy = 275 MPa.
Find the moment capacity of the beam.

3. Given the following properties of a rectangular concrete beam:

Beam width: 400 mm
Beam depth: 600 mm
Effective depth: 75 mm
As: 6 – 20 mm dia. Rebar
Assume the sections have cracked and used the transformed area method to compute the stresses for the
beam given. A 10-m simply supported beam is loaded with a 10 kN/m uniformly distributed load (including
beam weight) and a 30 kN point load 3 meters from the left support. Use n = 9

4. A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 280 mm and an effective depth of 520 mm It is reinforced for
tension only with 5-28 mm diameter bars. Material strength are:
f’c = 28 MPa
fs = 128 MPa
Assume n = 9. Use WSD. Assume tension side as cracked.
a. Locate the neutral axis from the maximum compression fiber.
b. What is the moment capacity based on concrete and steel?
c. Which fails first?

5. A 335 mm x 550 mm concrete beam is reinforced with three 25 mm diameter tension bars. The modular
ratio is n = 8. Assume effective depth as 435 mm. Determine the moment of inertia of the uncracked
transformed section.

6. A triangular beam has a length of 12 meters. It has an effective depth of 450 mm and a base of 400 mm.
The steel reinforcement is 3500 mm2. A uniformly distributed load of 20 kN/m is acting on the beam. Use n
= 9 and steel cover of 50 mm.
a. Determine the maximum stress that the concrete experiences.
b. Determine the location of the neutral axis measured from the apex so that balance condition
measured from the apex is achieved. Use f’c = 21 MPa and fs = 120 MPa.
c. Determine the balanced moment capacity.
7. A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 400 mm and a total depth of 550 mm. The longitudinal bars at
the top are 2-28 mm diameter and 4-32 mm diameter at the bottom. Concrete strength is f’c = 24 MPa and
steel yield strength fy = 300 MPa. Steel cover is 70 mm.
a. What is the transformed moment of inertia?
b. What is the moment capacity?
c. Determine the safest uniformly distributed load that the beam can carry including its weight if the
length of the beam is 8 meters?

8. Determine the flexural stresses using transformed area method. Compute also the compressive force on
the concrete. Use n = 8, M = 180 kN.m. As = 4 – 25 mm diameter rebars.
