But what was included in this revision is unclear, for Vincent also states that the white
whale did not swim into the novel before March or April, I85I (p. 47).

I say I, myself, have known three instances similar to this; that is in two
of them I saw the whales struck; and, upon the second attack, saw the
two irons with the respective marks cut in them, afterwards taken from
the dead fish. In the three-year instance, it so fell out that I was in the
boat both times, first and last, and the last time distinctly recognized a
peculiar sort of huge mole under the whale's eye, which I had observed
there three years previously. I say three years, but I am pretty sure it was
more than that. Here are three instances, then, which I personally know
the truth of. (pp. I75-I76)12
12 At most Melville may have had some experience as a harpooner on the Charles and
Henry, a voyage of less than six months. Rather than personal experience in the early nar-
rative, Melville seems to have relied on other whaling books: the account of the "three-year
instance," for example, was taken from Rev. Henry Cheever's The Whale and His Captors
(New York, I850). Other sources that he used in his chapters of whaling adventure were
Fredrick Debell Bennett's A Whaling Voyage Round the World (London, I840); Fredrick
Allyn Olmstead's Incidents of a Whaling Voyage (New York, I84I); and J. Ross Browne's
Etchings of a Whaling Cruise (New York, I846).

22 The early chapters look forward to landing on "barbarous coasts" (p. i i6), but the
Pequod does not touch land; they also prepare for an atmosphere of brutality that does not
develop in the story-Ishmael, for example, remarks when kicked by Peleg, "That was my
first kick" (p. 95), but he is not kicked again. In the original narrative Queequeg may have
died in a separate incident, for early in the story Ishmael comments, "From that hour I
clove to Queequeg like a barnacle; yea, till poor Queequeg took his last long dive" (p. 6i).
We think that into no recorded mind has the intense feeling of the visible
truth ever entered more deeply than into this man's. By visible truth, we
mean the apprehension of the absolute condition of present things as
they strike the eye of the man who fears them not, though they do their
worst to him,-the man who, like Russia or the British Empire, declares
himself a sovereign nature (in himself) amid the powers of heaven, hell,
or earth. He may perish; but so long as he exists he insists upon treating
with all Powers upon an equal basis.

33 Stewart states in "The Two Moby-Dicks" that the revision probably took place in the
following order: first Melville conceived of a whale sinking a ship, as in the case of the
Essex; then he made it a particular whale with a particular name and color; and, after
changing the plot, "the author felt the necessity of establishing in the reader's mind such
facts as that a whale could be white, could bear a name, and could sink a ship. Hence
sprang the cetology" (p. 446). Stewart has the progression of events backwards: the cetology
3. Melville may have revised the first story in two stages. The
earliest revision probably involved chapters 26-34; they seem to have
been revised before the present ending was added to the book, else
Pip's early death would not be foreshadowed in chapter 27. Later,
perhaps in the spring of I85I, Melville may have decided to rewrite
the original conclusion.
4. The revised conclusion is first evident in "The Castaway" (93).
Pip's rescue from a watery grave in this chapter prompts Ishmael
to remark that the episode anticipates his own abandonment, thus
foreshadowing his solitary state in "Epilogue." But Pip's rescue
may also offer a clue as to how Melville revised the original. In
the early narrative Pip was to have preceded the others in death;
perhaps he was drowned in the first version of "The Castaway" and
was resurrected in the revision so that he might play the fool to
Ahab's Lear. In a similar manner Melville probably used other
scenes from the early novel, transforming them to meet the demands
of the plot.
The case of Queequeg illustrates what may have happened to
incidents Melville revised. Like Pip's, Queequeg's death is proph-
esied in an early chapter (I3), where Ishmael states that his friend
is to take a "last long dive." His death may have occurred as a
result of his descent into the ship's hold to search for an oil leak;
he does become gravely ill and asks that a coffin be made for him.
But in the reshaping of the plot the various deaths are held for the
conclusion; thus Queequeg recovers and Melville uses his coffin to
save his narrator.
5. In joining the two narratives, Melville used large sections from
each, salvaging much from the original. He alternated sections
from the two narratives in structuring the novel, beginning with
the original land chapters (1-22), and then proceeding to the revised
chapters that introduce Ahab, the crew, and their quest (26-42); he
then returned to the original story, preserving certain adventure
chapters and the cetological chapters that he had attached to the
was written, then the plot was changed, andl later, after April i, when Melville received
Chase's Narre ative, the cetological chapter "The Battering Ram" (76), which (does what
Stewart suggests of the cetology as a whole (that is, prove that a whale "coul(d sink a ship"),
was interpolated into the manuscript. Melville had Chase's Narrative before him when
writing the chapter, for he borrows verbatim Chase's phrase "pave(d with horses' hoofs"
(Henry F. Pommer, "Herman Melville and the Wake of the Essex," Arnici-an Literature,
XX, November, 1948, 295).
