usable form and returned to the atmosphere

through stages that Involve microorganisms.

STAGES OF NITROGEN CYCLE:•

!).NITROGEN FIXATION:- Atmospheric

gaseous nitrogen Is converted Into a usable
form of nitrogen compounds by a process
called 'NITROGEN FIXATION'. This process
takes place involving blu~reen algae and
nitrogen fixing bacteria such as Rhizobium.

ii)AMMONIFICATION:- When plants and

animals die or when animals excrete waste,
the decomposers present In soil decompose
the nitrogenous waste to produce ammonia.

iii)NITRIFICATION:- Ammonia is highly toxic

to many Ofganisms , therefore it Is converted
by the nitrifying bacteria
(nitrosomonas,nitrobacter)into compounds of
nitrogen that can be used by plants. This
process is called NITRIFICATION.

iv).OENITRIFICATION ;- The de-nitrifying

bacteria(pseudomonas) convert some part of
nitrogen compounds back to gaseous
nitrogen. This process is called
de-nitrification.As a result of this,the
percentage of nitrogen in the atmosphere
remains constant.
